Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

Odds are the entire event would be under NDA if that were the case. Nintendo almost never publicly tweets about NDA-related events either, which further suggests there's nothing new there, besides delicious looking cupcakes

Considering the tweets are generally drumming up the hype for the info dump tomorrow I really don't think that necessarily matters. We got several tweets from sources about the last Splatoon event but it wasn't publicized mostly because the info from that was tying into the general Nintendo Direct that we got a week later.

Either way, the screenshot doesn't tell us anything about what modes are available to try, the maps they're showing or whether there's new single player levels. Not that it necessarily matters.

That's a hell of a conclusion to draw from a couple of pictures. Of course they wouldn't show photos of the new things.

They likely wouldn't show pics of it at all if there were anything new.

Either way, the screenshot doesn't tell us anything about what modes are available to try, the maps they're showing or whether there's new single player levels. Not that it necessarily matters.

It looks like a multiplayer-focused event, so I'm guessing nothing new SP was being shown. It seems like, as Nate said, it's the same content as shown to the press before

There is a local 1v1 vs multiplayer called "Battle Dojo".

One person is on the GamePad while the other person has to use the Wii U Pro controller and the TV.

The player controls ink, it's not an aiming system where you necessarily aim directly at the target. And the nunchuck+Wiimote has too few buttons to support the Splatoon control scheme.

?

You have to shoot-up areas of the map with your own color and shoot at opponents to cause them to respawn back on their turf. How are those things not considered targeting?

The demo at the event is probably the same one they've been previewing to media for the last few months. I doubt they are playing/seeing anything new.

Tomorrow's info will be revealing the last remaining details before review copies go out in a week or two.

The sole purpose of the pictures (from NoA) is to hype the Nintendo Direct tomorrow. They rarely show photos from the preview events, so obviously it is linked with the Direct. Of course they showed the new things to the press, to have the info dump at the same time with the Nintendo Direct.

But if you expect new things from SP, you better don't expect new things for SP. The SP is already big enough as it is. Of course it is a MP focused event, Splatoon is a MP focused game in the end.

Edit: and we already know that even the previous preview events had more info than it was posted, and there was still a lot under NDA.

The game is probably done by now, so they could play the actual game, not a demo.

Hopefully this sells me on the game. I love everything I've been able to see so far. Just need to know this is something that can be played a lot.

If the law of inverse direct hype is anything to go by (As the Xenoblade X last direct showed us) that means this will be possibly the best direct yet.

Yep, it could be one until E3 Digital Event 2015. :P

I hope there's a minimal demo like the one for Monster Hunter 4. It would be cool to get to try the game out before release later this month.

Yeah I need to try it to see if I want to get it, I'm not a big multiplayer person. Hopefully theirs a good single player mode otherwise I'll probably skip it.

Think they could reveal more local multiplayer modes at this point, or is it too late? The lack of local MP is my biggest disappointment with this game... I would've liked it to be the new Goldeneye / Timesplitters 2...

I would buy this game if it actually had proper local multiplayer other than buying 8 Wii U's. Its a real big disappointment it doesn't have it. The only thing that could save it is Online local Co-OP like Mario Kart but I highly doubt it has it. I definitely see people buying this day 1 without knowing it doesn't have local multiplayer

This gifs love them and are hype inducing! Will do my best to wake up pretty early to see the Directttt

NOA is having another preview event for Splatoon today... looks like Time, Forbes, some gaming press and some Youtubers are all there.

They have cupcakes and an area where you can shoot ink guns and throw paint balloons.

Wow now that's a cool media event! If I was there I would be shooting paint and throwing balloons and eating all the cupcakes. Screw the game ahah

You are basing this on what?

On the cupcakes.

Man, that just reminds me...Ninty better do the E3 events at Best Buys they've been doing for the past two years. Those were fun to go to. Loved playing Smash a couple months early last year, even if I had to drive an hour and a half to go to it. Getting to play new vidya early, getting streetpasses, and getting some free swag doing it. It was fun.

What he's trying to say is that the ink fires in an obvious parabolic trajectory, as opposed to your typical FPS hitscan gun or whatever. Why that cancels out pointer controls, I have no idea.

So off TV play is confirmed. But I'm wondering how this will work using gamepad motion control aiming? I hope its not too awkward..

Damn that's true and I'm surprised we have not seen more events like that from Nintendo. Hope by the time E3 comes they announce another Best Buy party with unnanounced games to try there!

I have an exam tomorrow but I think I'll be able to finish before the direct starts. There isn't anything I want to see in particular, though that's probably because I'm getting the game anyway.

I don't know where to post this question, so I decided to ask here since the direct is also today.
When can we expect the Nintendo financial report?

I would like to see a CTF type game mode. The ability to hide, ambush, and create or destroy lanes of ink seems like a good fit.

GameXplain's discussions and predictions about the upcoming Direct:

This video is so, unsurprisingly, frustrating. The whole video is based around someone's wish list, which would be fine if they said that's what it is instead of propagating the whole idea of this wishlist potentially being a leak. Its not, we know it isn't the host even says that he knows something under nda that contradicts the list yet he still tip toes around, calling it "probably fake."

The Mario fetish is annoying and we've already seen what the arcade game looks like so why are they acting like we haven't?

Horde mode was an interesting suggestion although I would expect it to be a private match only gamemode. The same goes for online battle dojo which I think Derick is undervaluing.

Overall the video just seems like something you'd find on some random yt channel with 20 subscribers. This isn't the kind of content gamexplain should be putting out.

The game is probably done by now, so they could play the actual game, not a demo.

As a comparison, the discs for MK8 were manufactured (in Europe at least) in late April 2014. I would expect a similar schedule for Splatoon. The reviewers will probably be able to get their review copies of Splatoon pretty soon after the Direct, unless they haven't already got those copies. (The review embargo for MK8 was lifted on May 15th 2014.)

They referred to it as a "supposed leak" throughout the video and immediately debunked it. I don't think they were unclear at all about what it was. Despite that, that list had some good ideas.

Everything I posted before. Oh, and the fact that there appears to have been no embargo at the event since journalists are freely talking about it, and yet no news came of it. So yeah, seems I was right--they only saw the same content we've already known about. The real news will be in the direct.

I hope the demo part of the leak comes true.
I played the game at the Paris Games Week and it was extremely fun, my friend didn't believe me when I told them this was probably the best game at the event, until they tried it out for themselves.

If this eShop promotion is indeed announced though, choosing from Tropical Freeze and Mario 3D World will be really, really hard...
If a gaffer already has all those games and doesn't need his code, I'd gladly relieve him from this burden ! :)

Then why did they continue to call it a potential leak the entire time? The fact that they gave it any credibility at all is ridiculous. They were absolutely unclear about what it is. Its not a leak yet they refused to say that.

If I watched the video without hearing anything previously about the "leak" I would be thinking that its probably not real but could be. Why? Because that's exactly what they said.

Perhaps Andre knows more than he can reveal at this point, and they find it simpler to just focus the discussion on the 3rd party "leak" content instead?

Confirm pro controller support and this game is bought day 1

There is support for pro controller. I saw footage ages ago when they advertised the feature of touching a part of the map on the standard pad to instantly transport your inkling there and immediately thought that people using the pro controller would be at a disadvantage.

Manoko is probably just referring to the fake leak that mentioned an eShop promotion similar to Mario Kart 8's "Buy the game, get one free!" deal (in the fake leak, it was only if you bought the game digital though).

Thought about getting it digital, but I preorder the Amiiboo version in germany already, so its physical for me :P

Promotion would be awesome though, maybe there could be a game I dont already own....like......Hyrule Warriors maybe :D

Mario Kart 8's promotion was for both physical and digital. If Nintendo does a promotion for Splatoon, I imagine the same will be true for that as well. I suppose we'll find out in a few hours.

I recommend Hyrule Warriors. Sucked up a TON of my time when I didn't expect it to, and I was nowhere close to beating everything (let alone the DLC that I bought). Almost certainly a game I will continue to return to in the next couple years.

So this direct will heavily influence my purchasing decision of the game. The core gameplay seems fun, but I'm not fully convinced of the complete package yet. It's a little edge Nintendo has to push me over now.

It's like the Wonderful 101 direct, where I was interested in the game before, but very hyped after the direct. Maybe this will do the same for Splatoon (hopefully with a little demo after the presentation).

A demo would be godlike...though my preorder is set...nonetheless I cant wait to see what the direct will bring us :) Hype is written all over that direct with ink

I'm not going to lie that I'm a little worried about the prospect of a demo after TW101. The game came off of a spectacular high after the Direct but that demo actively turned off a lot of people. Sometimes a demo can work to the game's detriment.

That said, Splatoon is the kind of game that is far more robust and has had positive reception on its demos ever since reveal, so a public demo could very well go down in a good way with audiences. I'm just going to be careful not to exhaust myself with the game before then if it happens, much like I have with other multiplayer based demos that have come out before it.

I guess I just get annoyed at all the misinformation and confusion surrounding splatoon and expect a major site to not propagate it.

I said before that I don't have a problem with them basing the discussion off of it. I would just like them to to make it clear that what they're talking about isn't a leak.

I actually do disagree with them using the "leak" to base their discussion on however that's from a personal viewpoint of the content I would allow if I was in charge rather than an ethical one.

I think this is the crucial part. The wonderful 101 is a whole other beast. Splatoon is much more accessible to the masses and I can't imagine many people struggling like they did with tw101. I think a demo is a very good idea as it would help people understand how the game controls which is still a question many have, including myself.

The core gameplay is super easy to pick and super fun rewarding. Mechanics are way more accessible than 101 and it's why the public demo (played it a few times in different occasions) is so successful. I'm 101% sure an eshop demo can only help the game with those who never tested it.

W101 demo was quite bad though. And even the full game was not enjoyed at the beginning by a lot of people, you need time to learn with that game to see its potential and get to the fun part.

Splatoon on the other hand had an immediate positive impact with the demo at all the expos, so it almost guaranteed to benefit from it.

OffTV play has been confirmed?

Also, what is this about no local multiplayer everyone is talking about? I thought a local multiplayer mode had already been confirmed :S
