Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

I hope this has more multi-player modes online than the two we know about. I also hope they finally assure us that we can in fact set up our own lobbies and invite friends, if we can't change the rules that's fine. But we need private lobbies

Think they could reveal more local multiplayer modes at this point, or is it too late? The lack of local MP is my biggest disappointment with this game... I would've liked it to be the new Goldeneye / Timesplitters 2...

There might be some more 1 v 1 game types in Battle Dojo beyond the Balloon stuff.

I think splitscreen 4-player would have already been announced if it were in the game.

That would have been fantastic. I have many fond memories of Goldeneye. You made me want something I didn't realize I wanted.

That's pretty much guaranteed, it was already mentioned that there are unannounced ranked battle modes and that Splat Zones is just one of them.

This was practically hinted by the discussion that you can't set custom rules for them. And by a gaffer that said that we should rather wait for more info before going nuts about the lack of lobbies.

...man, imagine a Splatoon Cup update for MK8. 8 Splatoon tracks (...4 would be ok too) and 2 different colors of tires. Tracks filled with same colors of ink... you get a speed boost when driving on the same color of your tire choice, you get slowed down on the different one. it would feel like twice as many tracks if they'd get smart designing them.

I find it a little insane that this could be the first console shooter I've bought for multiplayer...ever. Almost 30 years of gaming and some colorful squids and gyro aiming is what it took to drag me into that realm.

'd love to see IR aiming, as Metroid Prime 3 sold me on that being something that could be done great, but my experiences with good gyro aiming give me hope I'll be happy with the controls.

Oh, so local vs is there? Well, that's okay I guess, still though, I would think a local co-op of some kind would be a given, too.
My wording wasn't ironic, while versus was heavily rumoured and I think I remember seeing 2P local, I don't surely know what it actually is. For all I know, it could be a useless sandpaintbox.

There could have been some very interesting 5 player modes too (last player uses the tablet only). Missed opportunity. Still buying this because I love the concept and want to see a sequel.

Now that you mention it, yeah! They could re-use the single player stages and make the gamepad player play one of the robots that should stop the other players from finishing the stage.

You guys are deflating my hype with all this Smash-talk. Please, keep this crap out of the Splatoon Direct
+ the E3 presentation
!

I know, I know...it's just that for a person who thinks that Smash is simply a good game, it's getting kind of annoying. I'd rather prefer them focusing on the unreleased games instead and keep everything Smash-related to Smash-specific presentations.

I completely agreed with you on notion that they should keep Smash out of Splatoon Direct.

Not E3? It's like asking Nintendo to not advertising their biggest DLC to huge audiences. It's like asking companies to not advertising their DLC at E3. From top of my head, I recalled that some companies actually advertised their downloadable contents at E3 in the past, so your request came off somewhat strange.

It's just smart moves by companies to keep the games in the gamers' hands and keep DLC in their minds as well.

If you want to complain about franchises getting attention in directs after their release dates, then please don't single out a franchise because it would make you look like a hypocrite because you didn't complain about Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warrior.

I just want to be able to bring a local player with me to play online together, like in Mario Kart or the team modes in Smash. I don't know why we wouldn't be able to given that Splatoon is a team-based game.

The only thing I hope is that they do not announce even more content locked behind amiibos. I hope they realize if you don't live in big places like Japan/USA/Canada/UK/etc, it is next to impossible to find those damn toys. Which means a lot of people can't have access to the locked content even if they are willing to buy the toys.

Now regular DLC is something I welcome with open arms, as long as it is reasonably priced like the Mario Kart 8 DLC packs and not like the underwhelming and overpriced Smash DLCs (so far). Give us extra stages, outfits, etc.

I feel like I wouldn't be interested in this game at all if it weren't made by Nintendo. They just have a stranglehold on me where I have to purchase every single game made by them. Regardless, I'm looking forward to this.

That anime derisive swagger on the right is too good.

Twenty two hours to go and I'm so hyped.

Um if it's missing decent online and offline modes, then what does it have?

Because the Wii U doesn't support multiple Gamepads?

I had a dream I was playing splatoon on the vita. It was awesome. I sadly have nothing else to contribute to this thread...

I'm still going to press enter though

EDIT: Ah here we go:

Because the Wii U doesn't support multiple Gamepads?

It technically does. But the console didn't take off in the way that Nintendo hoped it would so sadly we will probably never see the functionality. They were also taking about eventually selling individual Gamepads at retail , which would of really helped me out seeing as mine was stolen and it pretty much rendered my WiiU useless (unable to set up a wifi connection, access settings etc.)

Based on the pics, it looks like the same info we already knew. I want one of those cupcakes tho
This was just an opportunity to give East Coast media one last hands-on session prior to review code being sent out. Basically a chance to give new hands-on impressions tomorrow to coincide with Direct coverage.

There's not really much to discern from a picture of the show floor alone (which really only just shows the game), and chances are that anything new being shown that press is allowed to play is under NDA until tomorrow.

Yep, as I expected. Just kind of lame that they're not showing NEW things that would tie into the Direct instead of giving us more of the what already know

Odds are the entire event would be under NDA if that were the case. Nintendo almost never publicly tweets about NDA-related events either, which further suggests there's nothing new there, besides delicious looking cupcakes

A co-op player can't use a wii mote and nunchuck?

WTF kind of gimped shit is this? Blops2 on Wii U had better multiplayer features and more control options, and it's 3 years old!

The player controls ink, it's not an aiming system where you necessarily aim directly at the target. And the nunchuck+Wiimote has too few buttons to support the Splatoon control scheme.

That depends on if you're okay with the game running at 15fps.
