Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

I love Arowana Mall. There's no better feeling than flying up that ramp through the air and nailing someone on the way down. The ramps make it easy to out-range the Jrs with the Tentatek Splattershot too. Feels like a slightly better version of Walleye Warehouse.

It just really sucks when the other team starts running up the score on you. It's really hard to get out when your whole team gets stuck.

Thanks for the games, GAF! Got to level 10, so it's time to quit for the night.

Played a bunch of matches so far, haven't won once haha. Always come in first or second but have no idea what the other people are doing.

Most matches it's not even close either. The other people on the team just rush into the other area and just die over and over again instead of actually inking all the things.

I don't get it.

What pisses me off most is when my teammates don't bother inking their own base and just run pretty much straight. Hey assholes! The fuq you think the objective is, eh?!

So I caved and bought it today. Not 100% happy with my purchase, but not hating it either.

Love the art style, the world, the weapons, yadda yadda.

What's to hate? I think the controls are rabid dog shit. I tried with motion, without motion, up and down on sensitivity, and yeah...worst controls in a shooter ever. Anyone defending this is high. :/ I have 1/10th of my precision from say a Call of Duty or Halo compared to here. Thank goodness this game doesn't have headshots mattering (does it?) because there's no way in hell you'll pop a dome intentionally.

It's no wonder you'll see rollers in droves... it's the only weapon that DOESN'T rely on the crap aiming controls in the game. Hold right trigger and turn off brain to win. I use the roller myself. Why not?

First 5-6 games. All losses. Matched up against people WAY higher level than myself. Almost every game had 2-3 rollers on the opposite team. At the end when you check the score screen it's the rollers sitting on top by a land slide.

Those games I was barely reaching even on K/D if I ran into the enemy team, and would have a hard time lending a hand to cover paint on the map too.

The moment I got the roller? First or second place, triple kills, yadda yadda. It's not even a fun weapon, but it's by far the most effective one the game has given me.

Oddly the game crashes my wi-fi connection somehow? Happened twice. Makes my Wii U say it can't connect to my router so I have to reset the console to enable it again.

Questions:

1) What's the point of the "single player" portion? Do I unlock things tied to MP for completing it? Just a fun distraction ?

2) How do I unlock my Amiibo stuff? I have him bought, but I don't know when/where I can touch it to the pad to get the gear from it.

3) I can only play turf wars, and I can't touch ranked either. What level does the second game type open and when does ranked become available?

If you want to watch good Splattershot Jr. footage, watch the GameXplain videos with Andre in them. Rollers are mostly so-so if they just try to roll into you only. Experiment with the controls a bit. There's no aim assist, which obviously makes hitting people in the other games easier.

Either way, I hope you end up really enjoying it. =)

Those of you struggling with controls, I know it can be hard to wrap your head around, but I guarantee it is significantly better than dual analog. It's the closest thing to keyboard and mouse on the couch I have experienced in a long time (I am an old school fps gamer from quake days). My three step advice is

1) turn down sensitivity to -2 or lower
2) make ample use of the 'y' for sharp turns and 180s
3) play and keep playing until your brain and body naturally adjusts

On the other topic, 3 minutes is the perfect length. It's the law of diminishing returns - any longer and both sides will just keep going back and forth. It's not really the kind of game where you slowly build up territory - on an even matched game, it just swings wildly from one side to the other.

And finally... I had splatoon dreams all night. I'm a squid now.

:lol

I've definitely had more loss than wins. Also had 2 games where the other team spamed the shit out of inkstrikers. Hell form above!

my hand... cramping... too long... holding... gamepad... freed by battery requirements! ...must... eat lunch... cook dinner... play... splatoon...

Got the game and played for around ~5 hours. Did tons of matches and load-out combos on all maps except Urchin Underpass which I have yet to play. Also did the first 8 levels of single player.

Game is incredible stuff. The freshest shooter I've played in years! Now to see if it keeps me entertained once I have finished single player and gotten to level 20 in MP.

What pisses me off most is when my teammates don't bother inking their own base and just run pretty much straight. Hey assholes! The fuq you think the objective is, eh?!

I do that! But only because I assume the roller or someone will be dutifully doing their part at home. If base is still empty on my respawn I always take the time to paint it over.

I played mostly Splattershot Jr. and loved it. I switched to Roller for a few matches and got destroyed. lol it's funny how everyone thought it was OP during the Testfire.

Gaining control of the middle territory is pretty important.
You can defend and go on the offensive much easier once you do.

There was one game where three of us started inking the starking platform in the Shipyard, and there were tears in my eyes I was so proud.

It didn't last. I was the only person inking the base 90% of the time.

I usually end up tossing a bomb to the floor every time I respawn. Chargers don't paint the spawn very well. =/ Of course, I'm speaking about spawns such as the Rig and Warehouse spawns.

Just got a Wii U Splatoon bundle. Added myself to the Google Doc, anyone from GAF is welcome to add me. NNID is "paullodec".

Looking forward to joining y'all online!

After another day of playing, my opinion remains the same. All the maps are great, but the Mall is by far the best. So many different strategies and approach points. Everytime I play it I devise a new strategy and see how the other teams react. So, so great.

So everyone was saying that the shops updated, but I still have the same one slotted stuff (I'm lvl 13). Do they update at midnight for your local time or something?

Yeah, that stage is awesome! I only got to play it a few times but it seems really complex and exciting compared to the other maps I've played .

I have met a few in some of my matches that were deadly with a roller. Took two of us to take one down at times.

I've tried:

The starting Splattershot Jr. - Pretty good.

Roller - My favorite during the Testfire, and my favorite now... though navigating some levels like the skate park becomes tough.

.52 Gal - Worthless.

I think too many people playing have bought into the "Roller players are mindless" strategy. Most people I attack with it try to just strongarm me away. Then I slip back and strike when they come forward.

If everyone does it, especially the goddamn rollers, it gets done extremely fast.

Yeah, at the expense of losing the central territory to a competent team. It makes no sense to do it at the start when you can do it later--and fill it in through the multiple runs you'll have from dying

I have three Defense Up buffs on my clothes, but I'm wondering if they're even worth it. I seem to get splatted in three shots anyway.

lol people still think rollers are OP?

Just unlocked the LMG equivalent. The name escapes me right now and I'm wrecking shit. Love this game.

yeah, i find it ridiculously hard to win once the enemy controls that, but people get too fixated on staying put and trying to control the middle instead of pushing forward

Direct fighting with the roller is not a good idea, better to either run around the map painting or defending areas by hiding in a wall and jumping out to roll someone over.

going to have to resist the urge to go all Vergil with the paint brush though.

Maintaining the the middle section of the rig is fun as hell so it has my vote currently. If they manage to eventually drive me out, I just paint the hell out of the rest of the rig.

You can actually see the difference when testing weapons, as there's a dummy with one, two, and three defense buffs on them. The gains seem to be marginal, you'll get one extra shot to live at best.

Does the Pro Controller have a gyro? It'd suck losing Super Jump but it'd be nice if they patched in support for other controllers later like they'd added features to Mario Kart.

Does the Camera Sensitivity option affect the sensitivity of the right stick, the motion controls, or both? Wish it was clear and that you could change them independently, I'm using 2 right now and the motion feels perfect but I wish the stick was more sensitive.

.52 Gal is my favorite weapon so far, especially with clothing that lowers the amount of ink that it uses. It has just the right amount of power to kill an enemy in a couple of shots, yet is fast and spread enough to cover the ground quickly as well. I also like the Splattershot JR, especially because of its shield special ability. Haven't really tried any of the other weapons yet as I've fallen in love with the rapid fire weapons.

Got to Level 10 and probably will stop for the night. I still want to keep playing, but I know if I don't stop now I'll be up all night playing until I'm level 20 - I'm that addicted to this game..

How do the stores work? Do they level with me, or do they stay the same and the abilities on that particular item that I bought just level?

Like will there ever be a hat that is Level 20 and really expensive?

I figured those weren't going to do much, they're not going to completely imbalance the multiplayer with the perks. I think the speed ones are going to end up being the most useful.

I die quite a bit in some games so I just go and cover anything that was missed. More points for me even if we do lose.

Yeah, I've seen some really good roller players as well. Maybe I just suck lol
I've already decided rollers aren't for me. I panic during close range combat so I don't dodge well enough.

That's fine with me. If my team has them distracted, it's time for me to go commando and flank them >:D

Been playing most of the day, even beat single player. Single player was okay, level design was very Super Mario Galaxy-esqe, minus the variety in level backdrops.

I'm kicking myself for buying the boy amibo though. I wanted the Samurai Armor, but I wanted the space squid armor more.
