Space Thunder Kids was an amazing watch, somone mentioned it last season and I talked about it then but invisible godzilla and the tron fight were the highlights i feel.

Canaan rocks, ANN redeemed.
This is preposterous. The only logic I can draw from this is that we have watched two completely different shows.

To be fair, that review only called the first 6 episodes of Canaan awesome and said it completely fell apart after that. And it only compared it to GitS and East of Eden because of the animation, not that the story or overall quality was the same. I haven't seen Canaan so I can't judge these statements, and far be it from me to endorse ANN's reviews, but it's not quite as outrageous as you make it sound.
Only the 1st episode had a terrific animation, maybe the last Episode as well but even those, weren't as impressive as Darker than Black, ToraDora, let alone Ghost in the Shell (I haven't seen EoE, but knowing Production IG, it should pack some amazing visuals). Even if the Animation was good, the Anime is just very much meh, I wouldn't say terrible, but because of its expectation it had set up, I would say it is. The story was poorly executed with bloody melodrama that defied its point. Its a train wreck. BEE TRAIN does better storyline with Lesbianism theme way better which is an absurd measurement in itself.

Aye. This just further confirms that Anime journalists are worse than their gaming counterparts which requires a substantial amount of energy to reach that fete.

Robot carnival - finally watched this after holding it off for so long and it was pretty awesome "Franken gears" and "Presence" were totally amazing and easily my two favorite shorts out of the nine, i also liked the whole upbeat 80s mood of "starlight angel" to, the music also sounded like it came straight from FF..

Only two shorts i didn't really care for is a "Tale of two robots" kinda bored me and felt to silly for me, and Deprive felt pointless, with not much point to any of the action going on-screen.

Weirdly enough i think i totally slept through the whole "Nightmare" segment as i don't remember it at all, going haft to sit down and watch it later..

The start and the end was like pure chaotic otomo so much destruction..

It's just a matter of differing tastes, I'd say.
The show had enough action and drama for my taste, a plot that I found fairly interesting and characters I liked very much (Canaan and Alphard, both for different reasons), plus an ending that I found fulfilling after the whole show had run its course.

Honey and clover ep1

Episode was pretty hilarious but the appearance of a loli and every ones lolita complex has me worried if I should continue to watch this.

Don't tell me this going where i think its going with it being a romance story between loli girl and main character.

That's because it's a bad show.

There are no lolis in Honey and Clover, and it's a great show.

I'll take your word for that. It tries too hard to pander to the Loli and Moe loving anime fanbase and because of that everything in Denpa Onna annoys me.

So first cousin/aunt loving isn't frown upon/taboo in Japan?

'Presence' and 'Robot Carnival' are my two favourite shorts, but it's a lovely little collection on the whole.

Talking of collections:

Space Thunder Kids

What happens when you take ten different shows and combine them into one movie? What happens if all these ten shows are also rip-offs of more successful anime? What if an evil fleet of Yamato clones duelled boringly with a fleet of boring squares? What if White Base launched evil Zeon rip-offs onto the Earth? What is Emeraldas teemed up with the guy from Tron to attack another White-Base, this time in wireframe, until the guy from Tron went to attack himself via a glorious discus action sequence? What if Mazinger was Gundam, with a Gundam Rifle and a cockpit with blades attached? What if tanks rolled across mountains for three minutes? What if China beat Piccolo?

Yeah.

Sherlock Hound 3

What a fantastic episode. Damn. I could go off about it for awhile but if I summarise it as "a twenty minute Miyazaki movie" that should hopefully be a vivid enough description for those familiar with his works. Think Cagliostro and Castle in the Sky though, because this is definitely an adventure piece.

I was waiting for your impressions on Sherlock Hound, Jexhius. Man! How much I'd really liked to see one more action & adventure movie (and a bit of slapstick-type of humor) from Mr. Miyazaki!

That period of his work seems to be long over, sadly. It's a shame, because he was really good at it. Lupin, The Castle of Cagliostro, Sherlock Hound, Future Boy Conan and even Castle in the Sky (to some extent) demonstrate his wide ranging skills in that area.

Episode was kind of a drag and I find Ryuushi rather annoying sometimes so it certainly doesn't help that they focus mostly on her in this one.

Clearly the lack of insane Meme antics is what hurts this show the most.

Ryuushi is awesome dude! Or maybe for me that's just because I have a friend who acts like her.

Awful, has loli fanservice, it's better than last episode with no epically awful moments, well it's better if I disclude the loli fanservice, the psycho bitch lol shrine maiden powers, the forming of the MG's harem (at home), not knowing how babies are made, and... well the whole goddamn episode basically.

I like the "Pokemon with tits" sections a lot more than the harem antics. Looks like the latter will be seriously minimized now that all 108 of the Sekirei have emerged.

Welcome to the first 'bad' episode of the show.

This episode was so disjointed I don't even know what it's main thrust was. So we open with...fanservice? What a waste of a whole minute. This plotting is indicative of the state of the episode as whole, which jumps from scene to scene with little sense of flow, logical, geography, mood or context.

The central story this week revolves around our protagonist receiving an interesting offer from two different players. In the end, he makes his decision on the first offer...but doesn't explain why. The second one isn't followed through with in this episode. Wonderful writing. Fabulous pacing.

On the positive side, they don't bother showing the whole battle this time around because they realise that it's unnecessary random nonsense. Instead they focus on the most interesting aspect, namely
his asset getting horrifically mauled
. However, they never really return to focus on it and it's largely forgotten two minutes later, like every other time it has happened. Oh well.

The storytelling throughout is just surprisingly...weak.

This episode would do Garzey's Wing proud, starts with fanservice, everyone telling kimimaru that everyone else is doing it wrong, throw in completely failing to putting weight behind the opponent (i.e what he's fighting for) for the whole episode by jumping back and forth to god knows what, and finish off with mashyu getting anhialated, and just as the oppenent is about to deliver the finishing blow just skip straight to Kimimaru being unhappy about his victory and ending the episode there.

Not impressed in this episode in the slightest.

I want a refund of my 20 minutes.

Ryuuko is totally my panderbait. This enrages me, but I can't help but be pulled in by her moe~moe. Unfortunately though, it kind of pulls the level of writing down since the MC is still an oblivious moron. At the least, Ryuuko's crush kinda got dropped onto his lap there.

Also, Granny's the new best character. MC: "Granny, I'm scared of being ostricised because of Erio~" Granny: "Suck it up, pussy!" :D

Hidan no Aria 6
I have no words left for this show. It's just become too much to explain in an organized fashion. Just sooooooooo much brilliance in all of this. "What dangerous item could the yandere miko possibly bring in her dresser?" *DRAMATIC CHORUS* *PANTIES, BOTH BLACK AND WHITE SEPARATED* *close drawer, chorus stops abruptly* "Nevermind..."

Oh dear lord, it's just too perfect. Best show of the season and best stealth action comedy show EVAR. :D

Great episode. Nice little story.

The show sometimes feels a tad too emotionally manipulatory, like with the puppet show, but other times it feels just right, like with this episode. Maybe the cranes were a bit too cliché, but still.

Akira:

I'm not going to go at length, because really there's nothing left to be said about this movie that hasn't already been said. It was interesting to revisit this movie after maybe 15 years though. I remembered bits and pieces of it, but clearly to my teenaged brain, the Neo Tokyo parts stuck with me much greater than the second half of the film.

But anyway, on the production side the film still looks marvellous. Sakuga porn and all that, with tremendous detail and a subdued but still distinctive soundtrack. I wasn't sure if it would hold up for me but, here's proof that high production values can make an animated film stand the test of time.

The film itself though... it feels very disjointed and I can understand why I remember the first half of the film so well while the second half of the film disappeared from my mind. What seems to be a simple penis envy tale suddenly balloons into a government conspiracy and a story about human evolution, where Tetsuo's motivations and character development doesn't seem all that consistent. The way the film resolves the main thread between Tetsuo and Kaneda is both very poignant (Please help me!) and very obtuse, leading to a conclusion that is ultimately anti-climatic.

Wikipedia says the film loses much of the manga and it certainly feels that way. I'm not sure if I'll ever read the book, but I have to imagine it's a more of a complete experience with a natural progression of the characters (and presumably, the mythology).

I dunno, the funny thing is, this film makes me want to watch Blade Runner again more than anything else... which probably goes to show the impact it has on me now. Maybe having it "rebooted" in a live action film isn't such a bad thing?

Would you look at this, it's another bullshit internet poll with a laughably small sample size (1685 respondents), this time on the "most amazing" anime film. Why do I present this here? Who knows. Maybe I have a fascination with ridiculously subjective results. The top ten:

1) Summer Wars -- 132
2) The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya -- 128
3) Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance -- 85
4 (tie) The Castle of Cagliostro; Castle in the Sky -- 84
6) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time -- 81
7) Kara no Kyoukai -- 63
8) Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind -- 61
9 (tie) Spirited Away; Kiki's Delivery Service -- 58

Anyway, just so we get some productive discussion out of this, and since the last anime movie thread died in January (best as I can tell), what's your favorite feature-length anime film?
I'll admit there's a lot of good films I haven't seen, but from the meager amount I have, I liked Princess Mononoke the most.

Iroha Ep. 5 and 6

This a prime example of an Anime getting worse with each passing episode and with the planned 26 episode it have on its backside, this could be turned into a horrible train-wreck or a horribly good train-wreck. The premise was quite promising, a young girl that doesn't speak like a robotic Japanese Idol wannabe with its desuuuu and dessuneee, set in realistic world where character interaction is the jest of it and great slice of life drama to tie everything up to tie everything together into a very realistic Anime. At least that's what the first 2 Episode tried to do, After that, it was back to Anime cliched and random silliness that can not happen in real life and Episode 6 strengthen that notion.

Who would have a brigade of soldiers, play around like that and resolve their simple idiotic pleasure like that?

ugh...

I can't shake the feeling that the phrase '' different taste'' is used more often than it should. I mean, I am trying to come off as Objectively as I can. Surely, even though the premise sounds fine and the resolution came as... conclusive ending, the execution came out as drab and tedious. The characters were thin-paper when it comes to their development and the whole action sequences were silly.

I mean can I say I think Superman 64 is a quality game because we differ in taste?

Steins Gate 1-3

So far, it's coming off more of a comedy to me with how the crazy the protagonist is. Talking to himself, nicknames, the sekuhara... Definitely was laughing a lot. That said, I think it's finally getting serious at least.
Is there no one else watching this? Haha. I'm six episodes in and loving it. Right now Steins;Gate and Kaiji are the only two anime I'm watching this season, though I just started C today and it seems promising. As for the comedy tone, it goes back and forth between that and moments of seriousness. I think it does it well. I actually like the main character a lot, but maybe that's just cause I have a tendency to overglorify things like he does.

I like what they wanted to put across with Sennoza but the pacing of this episode was absolutely awful. I appreciate how Sennoza
backed himself into a corner with his work and into a situation where he couldn't lose at all, even if his intentions are good.

The added weight on Kimimaro is good. This episode was supposed to highlight the fact that
Mikuni's strategy isn't perfect / without adverse consequences on the real world (i.e. those kids disappearing/dying).

The good thing about this episode was
Yoga asking about the pictures at the end and Ko simply responding if he wanted to know and Yoga flat out saying "No."

God, it's frustrating how this episode could have been handled so much better.

AnoHana 06

Christ, this is going to be one of the most bittersweet endings ever. I can't see it ending in anything but tears.

Being objective, if Canaan was trying to be something more than a simple action show with some cool and improbable powers, I might agree that it wasn't all that.
But I can only see it as a simple action show with cool powers, explosions, strong female leads, the old "skill vs hardwork" theme and some side drama to add a bit more spice.
The comedy moments with the Chinese girl also worked on me all the time. Plus I never found the execution to be tedious or drab.
So at the end, with all that in mind, I can only judge it positively, flaws (like some stuff left unexplained, to name one) or not.
Is Canaan a quality anime overall? I don't know. I know that I found it to be good entertainment and I'm happy with that.
I mean can I say I think Superman 64 is a quality game because we differ in taste?
While I'm not sure the two things are comparable, I guess one could. I mean, people call games shit daily because of differing tastes. Some crazies out there even say that Vagrant Story is a bad game!

This is basically my biggest problem with the show it keeps throwing around all these terms and plot elements at the door every episode, but it never leads to any form of meaningful climax, unlike say Mononoke or Trapeze which had a similar plot structure to this in a way but with actual pay-off between episodes. I'm giving it the benefit of doubt that it will all pay-off eventually, considering it's focused on a single plot arc rather then multiple plot arcs.
