I find it very difficult, let's call it impossible, to directly order a top ten of anything, anime films included.

wuss.

Let's do a Sai-animemovies thing then. Someone make up brackets. Let's nominate, umm... 32/64 movies.

What about things like "The Ten Best Top-Ten Lists"?

Seitokai no Ichizon 1-12 - Likable harem lead? Now that's a blast from the past. Was a ton of fun. If only all shows set in a single room could be this entertaining.

Anime is probably the easiest thing to directly order a set of works, in my opinion. On the other hand i find it literally impossible to do it with music, books, and films.

ISML Round 2-2 Exhibition
Narusegawa Naru -- 3398
Teletha Testarossa -- 3118

And this is why they're not making FMP season 3.

More on topic, had a chance to catch up Tiger and Bunny 2-3. Enjoying the show a lot. Nothing goes right for Kotetsu, does it?

That sound you hear is macodin celebrating Tessa's demise. I'm torn though. Naru is a bad character from a lame show.

I find it literally impossible in anything, unless I've only seen like 10 films or something!

Show Monogatari 3

Oh yes, this show still exists! I had forgotten. Too many titles this season.

It was an okay episode, I guess. Still all about the tsundere Dad though.

Occult Academy? Jintan has shitty taste in animu confirmed.

A so-so episode. The classroom scene I feel could've been handled better and the show has this tendency to resolve issues that'd take a couple of episodes in other shows in the space of a few minutes. Understandable, given the time constraints, but it maybe cheapens the potential emotional impact a little bit.

Anaru is a brave girl. I know I wouldn't want to spend the night in Poppo's manjuice filled castle. Bro as he may be.

Baccano just came out on Blu-ray, but since you've got it already, just watch it. It's a pretty short series. Actually, I've been meaning to watch it too, maybe I'll watch it too!

You need to watch Simoun. It's one of my sleeper series of the past decade, a real hidden masterpiece.

I see Kodomo no Jikan on your list. Hee hee. You gotta watch that. Kekekekekekeke.

I feel sorry for you that you spent money on Koihime Musou.

Bolded ones more worth watching, others I also liked.

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight
Kampfer
Kasimasi ~Girl Meets Girl~
Katanagatari

Koihime Musou (I almost like this enough to bold it, but won't)
Maburaho
Martian Successor Nadesico

Minami-ke Okaeri (S3; S1 is the best by far, but S3 is at least better than S2, Okawari, which isn't that great.)
Mushishi (must-watch, outstanding series!)
Nadia
Planetes
Read or Die TV
Saki

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Shin Koihime Musou (worst season, S1 and S3 are way better)
Taisho Baseball Girls (maybe this should be bolded)

Hidan no Aria 06 - I was asking myself "why am I actually watching this", but then the generic stupidity kicked in and I stopped thinking about that and just sat back and watched the generic harem stupidity ensue. And that generic harem stupidity was amusing, I must admit. Yandere girl moves in too? I would never, ever have guessed! And the two of them keep fighting and destroying things, too.

At least after his apartment is destroyed by the yandere v. tsundere battle it doesn't get magically repaired without an explanation like some other shows would do, though... it's still wrecked at the end.

The best moment of the episode, though, was when yandere girl asks whether hero and Aria had "done it", by which she meant kissing. Aria responds, yes, "but I didn't get pregnant from it". And then she explains that she was told that kissing can make you pregnant.

If there's ever been a better summation of Japan's "kissing equals sex" thing, I don't know what it is... :lol

At least the other characters react appropriately and tell her how wrong she is. Then she reads a book about how babies are made. It's a complete cooincidence that after that she starts practicing her cheerleader routine (for the upcoming festival) in front of our hero, repeatedly showing him her underwear, right? No connection at all! (yeah right)

The whole thing was so ridiculously stupid that I couldn't help but find it kind of amusing.

Hidan no Aria 6 was great. A worthy successor to the tradition of hilariously terrible anime. Was showing signs of it before, but really went all out this time. And got some nice fight animation as a bonus.

Anyway, just so we get some productive discussion out of this, and since the last anime movie thread died in January (best as I can tell), what's your favorite feature-length anime film?
I'll admit there's a lot of good films I haven't seen, but from the meager amount I have, I liked Princess Mononoke the most.

Either Kara no Kyoukai 5 or Sword of the Stranger. Hard to decide, but they're definitely my top 2.

Those shows stand up well enough on their own without watching that top crap first.

You're just being mean. And in the case of Jikan, just trying to get him arrested.

Thanks for all of the recommendations, guys! Definitely helps deciding where I should start. Now I can get it all watched. If I had just sat there staring at it I never would have decided on where to start and I never would have made it through as a result. It's much appreciated.

Akira:

I'm not going to go at length, because really there's nothing left to be said about this movie that hasn't already been said. It was interesting to revisit this movie after maybe 15 years though. I remembered bits and pieces of it, but clearly to my teenaged brain, the Neo Tokyo parts stuck with me much greater than the second half of the film.

But anyway, on the production side the film still looks marvellous. Sakuga porn and all that, with tremendous detail and a subdued but still distinctive soundtrack. I wasn't sure if it would hold up for me but, here's proof that high production values can make an animated film stand the test of time.

The film itself though... it feels very disjointed and I can understand why I remember the first half of the film so well while the second half of the film disappeared from my mind. What seems to be a simple penis envy tale suddenly balloons into a government conspiracy and a story about human evolution, where Tetsuo's motivations and character development doesn't seem all that consistent. The way the film resolves the main thread between Tetsuo and Kaneda is both very poignant (Please help me!) and very obtuse, leading to a conclusion that is ultimately anti-climatic.

Wikipedia says the film loses much of the manga and it certainly feels that way. I'm not sure if I'll ever read the book, but I have to imagine it's a more of a complete experience with a natural progression of the characters (and presumably, the mythology).

I dunno, the funny thing is, this film makes me want to watch Blade Runner again more than anything else... which probably goes to show the impact it has on me now. Maybe having it "rebooted" in a live action film isn't such a bad thing?
Hatin' on Akira? When will your reign of madness end?

Oh, and the manga isn't better, it's worse.

Hidan no Aria 6

Not as crazy as previous episodes but it still brought the laughs all the same. It's too bad I then remember people actually got paid to write this at some point and then the laughing stops.

Hito's right: Kodomo no Jikan is worth watching. It represents a cultural milestone in Japan and our understanding of Japan. It's actually got a pretty decent story too. You'll feel dirty and want to take a cold shower after the first few episodes, but you get used to it eventually once you've over the sheer culture shock of the whole thing, and then you'll sympathize with the bizarre main cast of characters. It's pretty funny too. :3

Baccano! 1:

Oh, hooray. That didn't make even a tiny bit of goddamn sense. So far I know there are 3 families, two of which are apparently mafia, the third of which are apparently immortals. They are at war with each other in an alternate 1930's Prohibition era. There's a train, the Flying Pussyfoot, which was carrying several important characters which was attacked by people apparently opposed to the immortal family. Also, there was a lot of blood. I'm glad they didn't pull any punches on the blood in this series. The whole thing is evidently narrated by the leader of a publisher of major newspapers and his young niece who is helping him reconstruct the events surrounding this mafia war. I guess it's kind of like Al Capone and the Untouchables combined with some weird occult shit and immortality. The sheer size of the ensemble cast will probably be a fucking pain in the ass to keep straight initially. Reminds me of Simoun, actually, in that regard, since we're talking about Izayoi's list.

I know, right. They probably ran out of money. Nakamura needs to stop losing Deals. The lack of a fight was the consequence this time, but who knows what will happen if he loses again.

Monocle-anime-gaf has a collective cry about it.

Hanasku Iroha 6:
Another good episode. The first half was a bit more comedic, but the second half of the episode worked very well. It did a great job delving into the inner workings of the grandmother and her son, who haven't had much to do up until now. The show continues to roll along quite well.

Jintan is such an attention whore, make such a scene in class.

C 6

This episode was going pretty swell up until the end, which is too bad after the show had been picking up so well over the last few weeks. There was a ton of build up and a massive let down by not showing the battle, although I suppose it doesnt really matter since they still really havent explained the rules of a deal. Also annoyed me that there wasnt any real reason given as to why he picked one option over the other. Oh well, that fbi lady is pretty cool at least.

I don't even know why people keep complaining about cutting out the fight in the latest episode of [C] it wasn't even a problem with the episode!

sparkle this bitch
-The C 06 was nothing but lost potential. Easily could have been the strongest episode of the season, but suffered from pacing headaches instead. Not showing the fight was just the final blue ball in it.

I still got a kick out of it though. Gave me more background, and honestly, I just enjoy the cast.

-Ano Hana 06. Wonderful ^_^

-Finally, Don't joke about Queen's Blade. It actually delivers what it promises!

Me: "On Mikuni's level? Damn, this is gonna be epic."
*Fight starts and Mysu gets fucked up
Me: "Holy shit holy shit holy shit, how is Yoga gonna get out of this one!?"
*The two hold hands and Yoga starts screaming
Me: "Oh boy oh boy, here it comes! Mezzoflation the fuck out of that angel!"
*Cut to dude packing up shit
Me: "....WHAT THE FUCK!?"

If you can't see how that's disappointing, then you need to learn to see how that's disappointing.

Don't worry, it does a pretty good job of guiding you through the story so you never feel lost for what's going on. Plus the opening (which I love) is a good reminder for who everyone is and what groups they fall into.
Out of curiosity, are you watching dub or sub? When I watched it I went with the English voice cast and the accents really made the whole setting click for me, quite enjoyable.

I'm watching it subbed, as is my usual custom. Series set in America are always weird watching subbed since everyone is speaking Japanese, and all the characters still act like they are Japanese. That being said, because everyone still acts Japanese, it still makes more sense to watch subbed since Americans just don't behave that way. Isaac and Miria are funny in Japanese anyways.

And yeah, the opening is nice in that it reviews everybody's names for you every time you start a new episode. Otherwise I would definitely find it impossible to remember who is who.

Sekirei 10

Learning some of the key players is always fun. Not sure if I like the first major arc being a city escape, but it might shed some light on the 3 MBI Sekirei and the kings of each district.

Also, Kuno is so moe.
