If you like mecha, really fun characters, and don't mind if they constantly use a bunch of in-show technobabble that they won't explain until later, then go for it. It's one of my favorite shows of the season.
The MP trilogy was fucking amazeballs. The atmosphere, immersion and gameplay. And all at a locked 60fps, so smooth and fluid. It's no surprise so many people are up in arms about Retro working on DK. It's not that DK isn't awesome, it is. It's just not MP.
MP in this case stands for Metroid Prime. It comes from this thread.
I wouldn't use that wording but would agree that the games are pretty good. It's nice to see so much love for F-Zero GX there as well.
Its rather dreadfully boring being a waste of my time and theirs with its slow to take off plot, overly complex transformation system thats rather under utilized in the context of the anime, and a generally weak plot thats a extreme misfit for the type of atmosphere that the anime consistently fails to reach.
Episode 7 or so is where it starts to improve but by then the plot was just something no one would really care for. flumpool has really been the highlight, you could save time and just watch Star Driver, the more polished mecha anime.

So I'm seemingly on an 80s binge. Anyway this is pretty much on the opposite spectrum of Dominion Tank Police despite both being scifi works in dystopias. This has a very serious tone throughout it and the story seen so far is that of a tragedy. I didn't expect Alita to be a kid, possibly because all the art I had seen prior had Alita/Gally as much older. The 2 OVAs reminded me of Elysium and how much a piece of shit that film was.
This was pretty much as dark as you can get without resorting to stuff like rape or gore porn. That said, it was also somewhat predictable because once you figure out the tone, it's easy to predict the worst outcome. This was a bigger problem in the 2nd OVA in that the show started to cash in some of the chips it had stockpiled in the first episode. I also thought the first episode was a bit better at subverting expectations such as in the sewer where the audience is tricked into believing that
Ido (the father) is the serial killer
. The show makes very good use of the atmosphere through effective placement of shadowing and editing to create this sense of stalking danger. That along with the knowledge that
that Ido had been going out late at night and getting injured,
really sells the idea that
Ido is the killer
. I actually enjoyed that segment a lot because it reminded me of Jack the Ripper cases in that Jack was supposedly thought to have been a surgeon, Jack targeted prostitutes, and Whitechapel was a slum. The first episode is really straight forward in a lot of aspects and while I like it more, the 2nd episode is critic-wise better. That's because the 2nd episode plays on the concept of duality against the idea of Zalem. Almost every character in the 2nd episode has a hidden side to them, one of good and one of evil. Yugo is shown as a kid who is desperately trying to reach his dream but that he's also
an accomplice to murder and maiming people to do it
. Chiren is represented as a cold hearted bitch who is obssesed with one-upping Ido but in the end,
she loves Ido as much as she hates him. She also a bit of a romanticist in that she
helps Alita save Yugo the first time
. There's even that sister-in-law for Yugo in that
she loved Yugo's brother but also got him killed out of jealousy
. Vector is full of shit as well. This is all overlayed with Zalem as this perfect city in the sky where at the end of the episode we find out that
that they use the Scrapyard for resources whether it's human produced or just human organs
. I really liked when
Yugo was trying to climb that pipe, and the robot said that those spikes that come down are for getting rid of rats and other vermin. It drilled home the fact that Zalem viewed these residents in the Scrapyard as nothing more than rats (visually shown when Yugo is literally crawling to get to Zalem). As such, why would you want rats in your house? It's heartbreaking because it's drilled in that Yugo's dream was just that, and that Yugo is being crushed by them
. It's better work than the shit in Elysium, that's for sure. I felt so bad for Alita in that Yugo wasn't looking at her at all. Then we have Chiren who
got an even worse fate than Yugo, and that's after she actually does a good deed for once
. She wanted to go to Zalem as a way of
forcing Ido to look at her
. It's love that drives both of their dreams and
they're both crushed by them

The animation for the fight bits was really good. Some good choreographed scenes and really fluid animation. I sort of wish the fights went longer but that's more because of how much I enjoyed them. The OVAs also did a notable job with lighting and it really elevated the mood for a few scenes, especially a few in episode 2. The character designs that were the thing that threw me for a loop as they reminded me a lot of the stuff in Mamoru Oshii works. Although now knowing that it was Nobuteru Yuki, I can definitely see some visual character elements from stuff like Lodoss. The music was something out of a RPG mixed with Kenji Kawai's work on Ghost in the Shell. I admit that was a bit of a backhanded compliment. One area that I want to highlight was the sound mixing during
Alita's argument with Yugo in the building
with the thunder outside in that it was timed perfectly and really added to the scene as it reflected Alita's anger and power.
Aww man Tina is so cute I just want to hug her~ Aside from that, this episode didn't have much going on until the end. Mostly just talking to the doctor and then harem shit. At least I can look forward to the next episode. Seems like there will be more action in it.

Nice resolution, Sora continues to be one of the top male leads this season. The ending was great, but their attempt to make me care about the elf and the blue haired girl are fruitless. You can't steal the gag of the two leads and make me laugh. Gtfo.
But no, I get that not every single person ever will get emotional in After Story. Most will though. It's unfortunate that you didn't feel anything by the shows conclusion. I would think it would've elicited some emotion. Different strokes I guess.
The shot that got quite a few fans to add him to the *fierce sex appeal* group, one more in the OP. I wish it had a different song, not as strong as millenario.
So for a split second when it started to roll the ED I thought it was actually over and I was genuinely starting to get upset. It then pulled back and went into like a
10 minute epilogue
. Which it really needed. So much happened in it. So
Kerry survives as does Waver and Kirei
. That's cool. Although it was quite sad to hear that
Kiritsugu can never see Ilya again
. And
Rins mom is alive
? Holy crap! Talk about a twist
although she's insane now and the situation was quite tragic for Rin
. For a little while earlier in the episode, I thought
Kariya was successful in getting Rin and Sakura back together but then mom appeared and I knew something went horribly wrong and wouldn't you know it SAKURA KILLS HIM
! Like holy crap man.
And we have
Archer who is now actually reincarnated
? I am a little fuzzy on that one.
Then we have
Saber in God knows where (flashback maybe?) just sulking
. Not quite the ending I was expecting for her. Not gonna lie I choked up a little when we hear
Shirley asking the question once again what Kerry wants to be when he gets older and the show closes with "I.... want to be a hero"
.
Great show. Beginning was a bit slow but the second season really pulled it all together very well. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to all who recommended it.
Glad you enjoyed it. Kiritsugu's story is that of Batman seeking redemption. He's not the savior the Fate universe wants (if so we'd have gotten Rider) he's the one we deserve.
And yeah the
literally pathetic resolution to his mission is disheartening. Urobutcher doesn't approve of happy endings remember?
His mission of being a hero will carry on to Shirou of FSN. Which is a shame, because Shirou sucks diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
I at the very least hope they make his character not chivalry sexist but just straight up sexist. At least that'd make his character more than a m'lady. And he DAMN better save all the females with his penis.
Like if you read everything that was pointed out with the first episode as a whole, that doesn't represent the whole show. There's basically like one more episode they brought all the perverted shit they've been holding off, and the rest is just entertaining leads and main characters.
It's by no means the most brilliant show ever, but lord knows it's more entertaining than most crap this season.
It's a shame that this show has gone so under the radar of Western fans, because it's quite the well-made kids' show. The animation is quite polished, lively and cartoony (and featuring all 2D vehicles, for those of you out there who appreciate that), while the content is engaging in a way that I wouldn't expect from an adaptation of a Level-5 game. Admittedly there isn't much plot to be had, it's pretty much a gag comedy with a delightful irreverence that reminds me of what I enjoyed so much about Jewelpet Kira Deco. The main character can summon Youkai he's become friends with to battle against other Youkai, but it doesn't play out like Pokemon - unless there's a time when Ash tried to summon Pikachu but got a message that Pikachu was out vacationing in Hawaii. There's clear attempts to make this enjoyable to both children and their parents; there's some childish potty humor at the same time as there are things that will fly right over young ones' heads, such as a satirical presentation of a downsized salaryman. I don't know how much of this came from the game and how much of this was invented for the anime, but based on what I've seen the popularity of this franchise in Japan is deserved.
The one thing I'm not particularly fond of is the character and monster designs - some of the youkai are on the ugly side - but it's not too bad.
This show just can't calm the hell down. It's so excited to get on with its SUPER EMOTIONAL STUFF that it can't help but constantly throw death flag after death flag at me in the vain hopes I'll give it the reaction it wants!
Also, that was a pretty bizarre jump in the opening. We left off the last episode with Kirito defining himself as a Beater (BAHAHAHAHA) while acting like some Lelouch wannabe in front of a bunch of scared players to literally starting the episode with him sharing some drinks with a few guys he just so happened to save! I thought I missed an episode.
