[Sengoku Collection] - 5

I think the hype and discussion of the episode kind of killed this episode for me because there weren't very many surprises.

Are people actually hyped about Sengoku Collection?

You must have missed the surprise (mainly stemming from how a SC episode wasn't complete dogshit) from some of the other posters in the last few pages.

To be fair, the MC does act the part of an insecure piece of shit. His constant self-loathing and failure help balance out some of the wish-fulfillment. I mean, his winning strategy for the first battle was to hit the other dude and then wait for the timer to run out.

It needs to be worse for him. We need more hard hitting stories about otaku suffering.

I will admit to skimming over Sengoku collection impressions as I havent been following the show at all. Its pretty much one of those shows where Sentai will probably license it and I'll pick it up later really cheap and watch it then.

Doctor Who (I know, different country) did it last year. Do you have any idea how that worked out for them?
If you want to be cute about all, all American shows were "split cour" until the mid-2000s, when people were pissed off with Lost and the repeats/recap episodes.

The reality though was that, at the time, the reason why they did that was because of sweeps periods (September, February, May) so they would plan their shows around those months (which is why January used to be a dead month).

USA Network does "split cours" with all its shows because it lets them rotate them in and out and churn through different series without burning out one show. That seems to work for them, but then again the mechanics of a cable network are different than for a broadcast network.

I really should pick up that figurine of her.

You get it?!
Not as easy as it looks in an anime!
...but this is an anime! lololol...Stupid.

Anyways, Ao still getting used to robo.
A phallic Secret mothership is destroyed.

Yet another refernce to anime-isms is made within the same half by little girl blue. Really, guys?

Location shift to the city of the United Islands. I'd guess it's supposed to look miles more advanced than an average city...but it doesn't look much different than New York...except with some flying cars.

As for
the shift of "kindness" from Ao's acquaintance's sister. It was very artificial, a light switch from "Yay, you're cute with that haircut!" to "Sell him for opportunity!" in a span of a minute felt like a lazy addition to the notion of Ao not being able to trust all strangers.

In short, better than the last episode, but didn't feel the sense of enjoyment as with the first. The interactions Ao has had with people that aren't Forehead and at times, the smugglers, have been weak.

With how this episode left us it seems,
he will have a chance to interact with generation Bleu.
Maybe they will make better interactions here due to the status quo...maybe not.

That screen looks super cute. But I'm guessing stuff looks less cute in motion huh?

Have you seen the shit that Sentai licenses?

Akikan for example. Koihime Muso. Nyan Koi. They license so much weird stuff.

I actually think that Sengoku Collection is one of the last series this season that isn't already licensed for a NA physical release of some sort. Because Sentai basically slaps Crunchyroll subs on a disc, throws the disc in a standard dvd case, and ships it off to Rightstuf and Amazon they basically license anything and everything that they can get their hands on that no one else wants. Apparently the series is the most radioactive of the radioactive to NA publishers, hah.

Honestly, with IS, I think "pound for pound", Sentai does more work than Funimation - especially if you don't give a shit about dubs.
And of course, Funimation has a lot of junk too!

But Funimation's junk at least has better packaging!

THESE ARE IMAGES THAT STUDIO DEEN ACTUALLY PRODUCED (maybe, well, it was probably a studio that specialises in background art, but it's in a DEEN show!)

Yeah I touched on this in my post about the show last night, those several minutes of Ranko wandering around town were very enjoyable, even if nothing was really happening. Good visual direction with lots of nice art to look at. In general this episode gave me hope that the show can still maintain a good level of quality even though it has stepped away from the tone present in the first 3 episodes.

Until Funimation bothers to license Japanese extras, then I don't really care what the box looks like or whether or not they have dry erase boards and keychains with their DVD sets.

The fact that I have to buy the Full Metal Alchemist OVA specials as a separate release years after the original run of the show, for example, is pretty asinine.

Anime running at any decent hour is aimed at children. No question about it. The rest of anime is not really aimed at anyone at all! Manchildren maybe. Lulz. Sales and ratings also reflect that.

The only shows that are definitely aimed at general older audiences air in NTV's late-night slot, such as Lupin this season, and noitamina, outside its flirting with otaku over the past year.

Absolutely, although I don't know if there was ever a time when those kinds of long running shows weren't getting made at those lengths, because they're all targeting the same demographic.

I will certainly agree that certain boutique titles (e.g. Wandering Son) would probably have never been made before, or they'd be OVA's. For example, yuri titles like Aoi Hana didn't really exist at one time (and I guess still don't exist now).

However, nearly 80% (roughly) of titles in 2008 were 13 episodes or less. These aren't all 'boutique' shows in boutique genres that no-one watches. I mean we've got stuff like rom-coms (Ano Natsu, B Gata), general comedies (Haiyore! ), action shows (Sacred Seven), slice of life stuff (Hanamaru Kindergarten), horrorish (Highschool of the Dead), drama (House of Five Leaves), supernatural (Otome Yōkai Zakuro) and so on.

To really find out more I'd need to look at how many episodes each work in a certain genre had over time because that would give us a better understanding of how, or if, this has changed.

I did a very basic study of the number of shows in a given genre produced over the years, but it's not very helpful.

All the shows you mention aired after midnight, and thus their genre doesn't matter - no one's going to be watching them! When shows air is the most important factor in what demographic they're aiming for and how long they will probably last.

Compare Sket Dance and Medaka Box. They're both Shounen Jump adaptations, but one airs in the afternoon and has lasted over a year so far, while the other airs in the dead of night and is only getting 12 episodes.

Hey, come on! If you're going to be a total backwards stuck-in-the-past square* and and actually own physical anime, it's perfectly valid to have a vested interest in how it looks on a shelf considering that it's really all you'll ever do with a DVD set anyway!

Also:

It's Shaft's secret best-secret yuri show.

In 10 years, you're probably going to throw the boxes away and put them into a CD notebook thing anyway. :p
All my PC game boxes are in a landfill, for example!

They used to do this. Look at my Tsukuyomi moonphase boxset from Funimation.

I wish companies could still afford to do quality releases like this.
Something like this seems to only come from Aniplex these days.

It sounds like you're not the kind of person that takes pleasure in a collection/library. I'd sell all of my media before I'd toss the boxes and keep the discs!

I think with modern releases, the only "specials" that they produce are cast commentaries with the English cast.
That would be like someone trying to sell a Japanese dub cast commentary for The Avengers as an extra feature to Japanese audiences.

:(

It's all about space. :(
I'm going to have to throw away my 50 issues of Edge magazine soon as well, since they're giant and take up so much space. They're such great objects as well, but what can you do?

90% of GAF hates Shaft anyway. They won't watch the secret best Shaft show. :(

I appreciate things like art galleries and commentaries on discs, but its not a dealbreaker or anything if they arent present. I much prefer the posters and postcards and pencilboards like Geneon and Aniplex include in their releases. I also really really like NISA's artbooks.
The Last Exile set has little papercraft vanship models. Those are the sorts of "extras" that I enjoy.

I rarely skip OPs, but this show's is just too much for me.

It's so bizarre when the hydra's heads start acting independently. One is jelly and salty, and now the other almost
drowns
. Only the nun is sticking to her role.

Why where they wasting time going after some box when there's bread to be baked? Ugh, Rick. Well, at least now we have one girl with a personality in the show.

I wonder when they'll show that Hank, the old lady, the elves, the soldiers and all the other characters who live in the island were also found stranded on the beach.

Admittedly, I'm totally out of space too so I know how it is. Several of my gaming libraries had to go into giant plastic tubs because I didn't have space for them, and I might box up more stuff soon just to relieve how claustrophobic my space feels. I would need some shelving units that extend to the ceiling in order to fix this problem, heheh.

Don't give up hope!
even though 90% of GAF is a really conservative estimate considering that's not even the percentage that hates anime

I may just do a promotional rewatch this summer if it comes to that, hahah.

Yes, apparently everyone on Windaria Island got there by mysteriously washing up on shore one day. The place must be surrounded by horrifically destructive whirlpools and no one knows it.

Also, this tickles me for some reason, but there's something so funny about a dwarf being named Hank.

I like tangibles, often, the disc extras I dont even watch even on western movies. Only thing I would care to watch were like just recording sessions of the VA's in their roles, that was always a nice touch on the Bleach dvds from viz.

My room isnt really claustrophobic but Im definitely short on space. Im not getting rid of anything though. The main problem is that I have nowhere to display figurines. They just sit in the boxes for now. Eventually I'll have my own place, and then I can kind of space stuff out more.

I keep everything in original cases with the original boxes. Cant bear to throw out anything.
I'm the same way, which is why I have a bookshelf full of white people comics (and several long boxes) that I keep for no good reason.

How many times am I really going to read Preacher? Probably not that many. :p

Have animators just kind of forgotten how to proportion anime faces and such? Its not that difficult. Unless they are insanely rushed and have a "fuck it thats good enough" kind of attitude. That is probably closer to the truth.
