For those commenting on Cowboy Bebop "filler" and how there are "core episodes" and so on, how would it make you feel knowing that when Cowboy Bebop first premiered in Japan, TV Tokyo actually refused to air the series as it was? Instead they aired ep2, 3, 7-15, and 18 as a 12 episode series, and threw in a recap edit somewhere in the middle too.

That was the way people first experienced Cowboy Bebop. Four months after that debacle, the pay network WOWOW broadcast the entire 26 episode series on their station. Of course being a pay network, it meant that for a lot of people relying on free-to-air broadcast, they never got to see it.

Why did this occur? Because TV Tokyo is a shitty TV station which overreacts to every little incident. At the time there were knife attacks among youngsters in Japan, and the station also got flake for the Pokemon episode causing epilepsy problems. So they started to self-regulate all their programs, and they deemed the bulk of Cowboy Bebop to be excessively violent and inappropriate for air. Lolz.

Complete bastardization. Nuts.

And i personally think he made a shitty decision.

Definitely agree.

Folktales from Japan 1

As others have said this was basically a Japanese version Aesop's Fables. It's got a really nice laid back atmosphere to it so I'll definitely continue to watch this. Poor backlog :(

So i come back and see people shitting on Cowboy Bebop and TTGL in the thread?

WTH? :/
Is nothing sacred?!

Yeah, the way the fucked up the original broadcast was one of the reasons why I wrongly believed Bebop didn't do all that well in Japan. What a clusterfuck.

Agreed.

Or maybe you provide actual arguments for why you disagree with me!

TTGL 1 introduces the characters and world and plot far better than Cowboy Bebop 1 does. Now, you can easily argue that TTGL's characters lack the depth that Cowboy Bebop has, but as far as first episodes go, TTGL > Cowboy Bebop.

I have nothing against TTGL's first episode. They're both very good first episodes, and they both set proper expectations in relation to their series as a whole. Each dramatic arc matches the typical episode of its respective series.

I think the biggest problem with TTGL's first is that Kamina comes across as a very "flat" character (which is probably what bothered frostbyte so much). He seems like an outsized caricature of over-the-top fearlessness. It takes the events of episode 2 for his more human side to appear. I think understanding that contrast, and why it exists, is important for understanding the series, and it's not apparent at all in episode 1.

It takes a long time for the full dimensions of Bebop's characters to appear, but I think we get a clear enough sense of Spike and Jet's personalities in the first episode that it works better as an introduction to the series.

I wonder what the initial reception was compared to when WOWOW showed the full thing.

I think it was probably something like:

When it aired - "Wow, TV Tokyo is a fucking terrible station."

When it aired again - "Wow, TV Tokyo is really a fucking terrible station."

TV Tokyo is still pretty shitty even now. Its embarassing that its one of the 7 major channels and there's basically nothing to watch on it except for late night anime and shitty variety with no-name comedians.

Saint Seiya Omega 2

These Cloth Stones are seriously annoying me. They should be giant boxes!

I did like the elemental cosmos explanation. That leads me to believe there will be more intensive tactics this time around, though I could be expecting too much, especially if Heartcatch is any indication.

heh, maybe i should start watching Sailor Moon....
You should, because it's a good show!
Is nothing sacred?!

Nothing should be sacred, or exempt from criticism.

You don't even have any kind of basis to make those statements since you never watched past episode 1 of Bebop.

Perhaps you missed the part where I was comparing the first episodes as introductory episodes, as in, episodes designed to draw an audience in. Or maybe you just wanted to stand on your soapbox and crow about how awesome Cowboy Bebop is and how anyone who thinks it's less than stellar is so terrible, etc.

So i come back and see people shitting on Cowboy Bebop and TTGL in the thread?

Uh, I just see people engaging in rational discussion about them, instead of the usual circle jerking over a few sacred cows.

You need to let the old St Seiya go, cosmic. :(

well, I might just be repeating a old inaccurate rumour. It did spawn a video game and movie after all. But i don't think I've ever seen it on a japanese top ten list. where over here its almost required.

fyi

I personally haven't checked. It wouldn't surprise me if the Japanese hated it but I also wouldn't be surprised if it went the other way as well.

Let's not forget the amazing CG in Another:

Truly, the glorious future of CG is upon us.

Jesus that's some of the worst use of CG and animation I've seen in a long time. Note how his body doesn't even look like it's in water.

Cowboy Bebop sold relatively well in Japan, is fondly remembered especially by core animation fans. But as a franchise which cannot be exploited, abused, and saturated with merchandising for 14 years, anyone in Japan who is enough of an anime fan today to bother participating in garbage polls and reading garbage magazines would probably not have any idea of what the show is.

So there's new info on Tari Tari out, the new show from PA Works. Summary shows that this will be about a choir and the friendship between the 3 girls. Its also based in Enoshima on the beach. Whats with these beachside towns and anime recently (Kamogawa in Lagrange).

I think the staff is old but its basically the HanaIro staff except Ando, he's been replaced by Hashimoto Masakazu who directed a Layton movie.

They thing you really haven't said, however, is how TTGL did anything better. Aside from TTGL having to coherently present a premise more bizarre, relatively--which it did just fine, both episodes did their job of giving a very clear view of the setting;
Kamina and Simon made it to the surface, after the antics, with a pan out at the vastness, and Bebop employed rather simple bit of visual storytelling in showing that the 'cars' (parking in the spot, as if it was one) of their day are jets...that would further be shown to be not just 'jets' as one might have assumed initially, but space vehicles;
letting the viewer deduce from there. Both demonstrated the primary traits of the focal characters;
Kamina's bravado and, ultimately, Simon's cowardliness, and in the case of bebop, Spike's heavy-handedness
. And both gave not only an indication of what trajectory the characters would take, but how the shows would be furthered structured, imo;
Kamina and Simon only had one real direction, and Jet and Spike were bounty hunters--
pieceworkers.

I personally feel that Bebop was directed with much more tact, but do feel that both did what first eps are to do.

Ano Natsu de Matteru-Complete

This is a shittier version of Toradora on multiple levels and the final episode is horrible all on its own. Where to start? The drama, drama, and drama. The whole fucking scenario feels so contrived even worse than Ano Hana in regards to the audience knowing all of this is going to end in tears and it's dragged out so long. The characters themselves really aren't that interesting except Remon who is a class A troll.

The animation was relatively decent and the music was adequate but nothing decent. I did like the character designs themselves though.

Here's the major problem though. Many of these relationships are already predetermined in that we don't see how they developed. This is a fundamental problem in how the audience invests in both the characters and the relationships as it's just another fact given instead of it being the emotional component that it is. The beautiful thing about Toradora is that the audience sees the fundamental relationships form and thus have an investment into the world.

Now the final episode is a big WTF as the whole MiB thing actually being real breaks the setting of the anime and is farfetched for the show. Yes this is an anime about spaceships however they use a running joke throughout the series and make it real in a very hamfisted scene that feels like a straight Deus Ex Machina even though it somewhat isn't.

The love scenes also feel way too overtop which may be representative of teenage puppylove but come off somewhat annoying in the presentation. Kaito and Ichika also seem off in their own little world while the rest of their friends are struggling in depression at being rejected. You see these happy scenes with the new couple then Kanna crying in a ball somewhere and you can't help but cheer for the underdog, Kanna, and think something is going to happen when she rushes off to his house but the whole scene just passes by.

I'm having a hard time deciding to give this either a 6 or a 7. The production values themselves are very good and the whole filming a movie about their summer rather than what they actually were trying to film is a rather touching point.

Yes, I'd agree about Ano Natsu being inferior to Toradora. Contrived is also spot on.

I wouldn't be so harsh on the whole Deus Ex Machina in the last episode. It's supposed to be a light hearted romantic comedy about aliens. The
MiB thing
is slightly surprising but I was okay with it since the tone was set from the start to be an unrealistic rom-com.

I thought the characters were handled decently well. In fact, the character development was stronger than I expected especially in regards to Kanna and Mio. Ichika's character was way too by-the-books and I'd agree that Kaito and Ichika were off into their little world a bit. Still, I give credit to the character development the majority of the cast had.
