Living in the shadow of Amaz
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - The Day of Sagittarius

Oh boy, technobabble.

XMTIW.jpg

That was awesome. I wonder how Nagato would fare in the WCG StarCraft finals.

Just a heads up for anybody who was looking to buy the new Bobobo Box Set from S'more Entertainment (the same group that recently picked up Galaxy Express 999), they advertise it as a dub/sub release but there are no subtitles for the episodes. The "subs" are on a separate disc in PDF form.

Still might pick it up myself though. It's $25 for 38 episodes on 4 discs (with part 2 coming in around September). Yes 38 episodes on 4 discs. I'm sure pizzaroll is crying right now :(

Wat.

I have no idea why they fucked this up so badly -- but, luckily, there is no reason to watch Bobobo in Japanese anyway. The dub is a good 85% of the fun, and it's all I bought the set for!

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Day of Sagittarius says no.

I thought the concert scene was overrated. I mean, K-On has many more concert scenes and no one praises them for that :p
Because they're all worse than Live Alive.

My K-ON trolling aside, this is truly the one thing I felt was missing from K-ON. Not a single music scene to match Haruhi's.

That's cause Haruhi still has the best KyoAni concert scene!

Also nice to see someone appreciate KyoAni's work before they started churning out crap.

This kind of twisting of truth shouldn't be allowed. That's just wrong!

True. I felt Haruhi's concert scene was just done more powerfully and raw than any of K-ON's music scenes. Granted I haven't watched the K-ON movie.

Why do I keep forgetting Haruhi predates Lucky Star, they even have a Haruhi parody in it at some stage ffs.

I take back what I said. Ai's arc is best arc. Kaoru can be my solid #2 though for sure.

Personally I'm hoping that their Galaxy Express 999 release is truly old school. No subs on disc, I want a thick 100+ page manual that you read along while watching the show itself.
I'm holding out for the inclusion of a Japanese primer and episode-specific glossaries.

You should, because it's a good show!

Nothing should be sacred, or exempt from criticism.

Perhaps you missed the part where I was comparing the first episodes as introductory episodes, as in, episodes designed to draw an audience in. Or maybe you just wanted to stand on your soapbox and crow about how awesome Cowboy Bebop is and how anyone who thinks it's less than stellar is so terrible, etc.

Uh, I just see people engaging in rational discussion about them, instead of the usual circle jerking over a few sacred cows.
I think your view of what a first episode should be is extremely narrow, misguided, and should be scheduled for review by yourself.

I'm sorry, I complete forgot that Kyoani did Key stuff. :(

Anyway, even if you disagree that it's not a good show, it's no where near being their best.

Cheat Sheet + Translated script please. We should also be required to play our own music, throw the OST in a disk and give us the times that each song is meant to play so we can select the appropriate track and timings.
It's not just an anime boxset, it's an anime playset! Look at all that value, now you can make your own localisation!

One of their worst? Hmm. Well it's certainly not what I'd think of when one say's KyoAni's worst (That would probably be left for Munto though I've only seen a little bit of it).

Munto had great ideas, unfortunately, the execution left a lot to be desired, especially taking everything regarding it's presentation to the public. First you had the two OVAs, then the TV show which was supposed to be the sequel, but the first half was comprised of nothing but the OVA material, and when the new stuff started we were treated to a "to be continued" screen at the end. The movie which should have finished everything was basically a summary of the second half of the show with something like extra five minutes added at the end, but it still didn't explain anything.

However, I still think the franchise is decent, the fantasy world is extremely imaginative, very well done, and the animation is stellar, so many sakuga moments in the show, a lot of eye candy, so it's definitely worth the watch.

That being said, Haruhi is amazing.

Oh and with everyone looking normal and having normal hair, there's one person who stands out from the whole thing.

Not one, not two, but triple drill hair!
That's the second dumbest looking Drill Hair I've seen, outside of Maggot Hair.

When you see people slating Fate/Zero, Toradora, and Battle Royale all on the same page, you begin to lose faith in humanity.

Leave Taiga alone!

I heard about this last night. Probably one of the shittiest practices I've heard about, and I don't even like Bobobo. I hope no one encourages them by buying this ripoff.

WHAT THE SHIT.

I've had this preordered forever and it finally shipped a couple of days ago, if this is true I'm returning it back to Amazon the second I receive it. I mean, I enjoyed the dub, but I can't support this kind of laziness/shadiness.

Fuck, I waited years for a proper release of Bobobo too.

Ano Natsu isn't really a character focused show. None of the characters have any real development that isn't related to their romances. What makes Ano Natsu better than most romance anime is it's pacing and how it handles all the contrivances and misunderstanding inherent in the genre. It's a show that benefited from being 12 episodes.
This is a good description.
Personally I wouldn't compare ToraDora and AnoNatsu at all.
They're pretty different things, even if they both have the label "romance" on them.
AnoNatsu is a very narrow, focused show that produces a sequence of melodramatic pure-emotion scenes across a brief 12 episodes.
ToraDora is a longer, more complex character and relationship growth story, with more going on in peoples' lives than just who loves who.

I actually suffered from a bit of the same expectation-betrayal while watching ToraDora, that Jarmel suffered while watching AnoNatsu, in that
I kept expecting ToraDora to have more traditional love-triangle jealousy explosions but the characters were too mature and too aware of the situation for it to go down that way.

The CG in Fate Zero is among the best I've seen in anime for sure.
If that is the future of CG animation then perhaps it is not so bleak.

Why did this occur? Because TV Tokyo is a shitty TV station which overreacts to every little incident. At the time there were knife attacks among youngsters in Japan, and the station also got flake for the Pokemon episode causing epilepsy problems. So they started to self-regulate all their programs, and they deemed the bulk of Cowboy Bebop to be excessively violent and inappropriate for air. Lolz.

What a bunch of losers. It's not like that pokemon epilepsy thing even occurred!

Is this "hate on TV Tokyo" hour? If not, can it be?

stupid SZS eps broadcast in 480p (most scenes), 480i (some others), 720p (the op), 240p (the ed), or weird combos like that. the op and ed actually flipped back and forth in resolution depending on which team was putting the ep together.

Clearly we need another wartime generation to grow up drawing planes, tanks, jeeps and other stuff rather than little girls!
A pro-militarism society could be very dangerous! If you put it like that, it might be preferable this kind of disillusioned cute-absorbing actual generation of so-called 'otaku'... which I think leads me to bring here another conversation, this time between Toshio Okada and Kaichirō Morikawa:

Kaichirō Morikawa - Takashi Murakami said:
Over time, the focus of otaku taste shifted from science fiction to anime to eroge [erotic games], as young boys who once embraced the bright future promised by science saw this future gradually eroded by the increasingly grim reality around them. I think they needed an alternative.(...)

Generally speaking, I see a downward spiral. Aum Shinrikyo was influenced by Genma Wars [Genma Taisen]. In the 1980s, otaku dreamt of Armageddon; they fantasized about employing supernatural powers to create a new world after the end of the world. But Aum's subway attack in 1995 thoroughly shattered the post-apocalyptic otaku dream of creating a new world in which they would become heroes. After their apocalyptic fantasies collapsed, they steadily shifted to moe. Before their Armageddon obsession, there was science fiction, which provided otaku with an alternative to the actual future. In the broadest terms, moe has replaced 'future.'

Only well selected fragments by Mr. Morikawa here, though.

That sounds more like incompetence on SHAFT's part.

For SZS, probably, TV Tokyo can't molest it that much when they get it on the day it airs (occasionally with staffers making mad dashes across town to slam that Betacam tape into the VCR at the station a few minutes before airtime.)

There is something going on in the TV Tokyo-sanctioned production process that involves downscaling the animation to 480p, upscaling it back to SuperPAL, then applying titling and effects, though. A lot of shows had it happen until last year or so.
