It never stops being all over the place, but the second half of the show is stronger in that it remembers to do things with characters other than Ringo, and I think you'll appreciate several episodes that come later. I loved the whole show so my viewpoint is going to be biased but I do think there's stuff for you to enjoy.

Some of the individual scenes and episodes of Penguin Drum are absolutely brilliant, but as a whole the show is messy, wildly inconsistent, and unsatisfying. It was poorly planned on Ikuhara's part - he had so many ideas that he wanted to stuff in that he didn't bother to stop and think about how they fit together. I found it a worthwhile watch, if far from the masterpiece some in here view it as.
I approve of duckroll's list.
If this does end up leading to more Stranger with awesome action, I'll be all for it.
It's funny considering majority of season 1 is filler whereas season 2 follows faithfully to the manga.

She clearly admired her father so she would want to be with someone who had some of his better qualities. It's not at all like she want's to have sex with her father.

He has a degree in mechanical engineering and was for many years a succesful lead engineer. Mutta is nether an idiot nor without talent... I would say Mutta is a pretty good role model
I didn't say that he was an idiot or without talent, just that he's objectively not in as good a physical shape as the younger candidates. It has nothing to do with his character or overall qualification to be an astronaut.

Good once again. I loved the dream sequences, just like in the first episode, and I think the relationship is managing to come across well. The show is nailing the awkwardness of teen romance while also setting up this pretty unique relationship between these characters.
Also, lots of stimulation.

That was actually alot of fun, and while the show may never have the animation budget to pull off slick and powerful action sequences like other shows can, they did well enough with what they had. They're really great at pulling stuff straight from the comic too. It's a great adaptation.

So another Keiichi has to save Belldandy episode expect with a twist, Keiichi gets turned into a girl and still has to save Belldandy. A lot of fun though just with that little change, so good job show.

Episode 9 is the SHAFT episode though.
I feel like it's a show where the parts are greater than the whole. There are moments of absolute brilliance, but as an interconnected and complete work it's not as effective as it should be. I guess it's like the LOST of anime.
School life must be pretty hard when you violate zero-tolerance laws just by existing!

That's a really good comparison, considering how both shows like to use twists for shock value that don't make a lot of sense in the bigger picture. Fortunately Penguin Drum didn't get dragged out as much as Lost did, so it wasn't as frustrating.
Nobuyuki Takeuchi is an important part of SHAFT but he is not SHAFT itself.

It's interesting how we keep seeing SHAFT employees make better stuff outside of SHAFT.

Well, thankfully, the second episode shot down the notion that droll swapping is a gateway to hand holding, so I think we might start to see some progress in this field in the near future. It's a brave new world we live in.
