The movie has a 3 minute short explaining the series. However you really need to watch the series to appreciate the movie and I'd argue vice versa.

Violet Evergarden (through two shorts) is a novel about letters and how words convey emotions to people from others. Violet herself isnt so much the protagonist; instead shes a common character that gets loaned/rented to people as shes just a machine. Instead of focusing on how a robot thinks/feels (and I use that lightly), Akatsuki focuses on different characters thoughts/tales and shifts the protagonist from story to story. I think this will work better in episode form than in a movie as you can adapt the shorts into episodes rather than one long story. The bigger problem is Akatsukis writing and a lack of dialogue compared to what needs to happen in videos. How do you choose to convey what a person is feeling? Monologues? Visual gimmicks like displaying written lines? Something different? Itll be tough to hold an audiences attention for the start of an episode without that. Granted, additional dialogue could be written.
One attribute that Ive enjoyed is the setting taking place outside of Japan in a fictional country similar to an older European setting. Inevitably my own imagination of the setting is biased from my viewings of Gosick and JoJo Part 1, but everything fits in well with that time period. It certainly feels fresh and would be very stimulating for an art director/director to focus on.
Id rather see someone new work on this like Ogawa or even Dos Yamamura instead of the Ishihara/Yamada/Takemoto trio. Takemoto would be fine with it, but his work needs a comedic element to it or else it suffers from being overly oppressing (TSR). Ishihara is unsuited for this story as the characters arent visual novel archetypes. I would worry that Yamada would try and delve into Violet too much instead of focusing on the surrounding characters, whose stories are really being told. Utsumi is more of a comedy director, so shes out. That leaves many of the newbies at KyoAni/Do to work with.

In other KyoAni news, A Silent Voice has gotten a new key visual and some new cast/staff information. The most interesting bit here is that Kensuke Ushio (Ping Pong, Space Dandy) will be writing the music for the film.
UK release news: Anime Limited picked up all 4 of the Persona 3 movies. Nice, itll save people having to pay for those outrageous import editions. No word on a dub(itd be amazing if they could get the games cast back again).

It's partly the setting, but this gives me Emma vibes if she was moving around from one master to another. I've confidence that KyoAni will nail the visual and body language even if she ends up talking very little.

Were the P3 movies any good? I'd heard they weren't a patch on the games but I've yet to play P4G so while I think there's some link there I've only time for one super long JRPG before P5 which looks amazing
Wow? Wonder if itll be in OVA format. The manga is supposedly not running that long, so i wonder if they'll push this out to run alongside it or when it ends.

Not really, they look real pretty but it does the game a disservice. I would only watch them after you've played P3 and feel like you want some extra pandering.

The way Toki's possession by the snow mushi is used to indicate his refusal to accept his sister's death, and then their disappearance to indicate his coming to terms with it, makes this a particularly poetic episode.

If you could just pick out a few episodes, I'd have to say ep.19 is one of my favorites of the series so far. However, I can't say that good episode can override how horribly wrong this whole plot has gotten. Everything from

That actuallu showed some good character development from the preior 6 or so episodes of him being a complete dictator "Hitler Shu" as someone called him here. Also, it was great to see him go all out to kill one of the antagonists that has been an a$$hole from day 1. Pretty much the whole episode was interesting, exciting and well done with a touch of emotion
Let's see how they close this out now...

Gai being brought back from the dead, cutting off Shu's arm, and exerting his dominance to become the "one true king," to blondie class pres. becoming one of his minions and killing her own grandfather. Then you have Inori becoming a "monster" and thrashing everything in her way before she is taken down by a giant arrow void

They're alright. The first one is probably the best one since it does a good job characterizing P3 Protag.

Watch the Persona 3 movies if you're a fan of the series. Otherwise play the game first.

Wouldn't go so far as saying their shit, but it's an 80 hour RPG reduced to around 400 minutes. It's mostly just focusing on the story which wasn't that great to begin with.

The true measure of a friend is if they bought Romancing SaGa 2 or not.
