I was at the mall, looking for a toilet auger and when I passed by the local gameshop, they said they just received Fallen Order. I thought, why not. I haven't bought a game in a while now. So here's my roughly 3-4 hours impressions of Fallen Order on the base PS4.
Graphics are okay, they can look kinda rough on the base PS4. Clippings are quite evident, I've experienced quite a few stuttering while running and changing areas. It bothered my slightly, The first intro level was really nice I thought, some cool set pieces, almost akin to Uncharted 2 train set piece in the beginning actually, but with Star Wars flavor. The 2nd planet, wasn't really feeling it at all. A lot of stuttering I noticed. Its more of an extension of the tutorial area. I'm on my 3rd planet now, and it feels way better than the 1st. The 1st planet almost left a lasting bad impression because I spent quite some time on it.
Controls feel a floaty, there's a lag when the character moves. Would be nice if the movement was more on point. Definitely not as good feeling as say, Uncharted or God of War. But since Respawn is more known for their 1st person shooters, I give them some leeway. Wall running feels much better in Titanfall, haha. The irony.
Combat wise, its okay so far. Would prefer if it was less floaty and had more impact to it. I can see the comparisons to Sekiro, though I've not played Sekiro personally. I'm playing on Jedi Master difficulty (3rd hardest), and for humanoid enemies, the focus seems more on parrying and counter. For monster enemies, you could slash away but I have to say, its quite hard this game. The normal rat monsters can easily kill you if you aren't paying attention. One thing I will say is different compared to Soulsborne games, is that when you die, you need to come back and hit the enemy that killed you to get back your XPs. Its not on the ground, so that threw me off a bit. Skill tree opens up many new moves for lightsaber combat, and has upgrades for health, force abilites, etc.
I think the aspect I love the most about this game is the exploration. The map is littered with things to collect, you collect info from dead enemies, things to scan, some lore bits from the environment, flower seeds, upgrades to health stims, costumes for almost everything, lightsaber parts. And I appreciate it that its not being told on the map, you just go there, find a box or thing, and you get...stuff. I like the level design, there's small puzzles along the way, there's almost always optional pathways and shortcuts to unlock.
Music is appropriately Star Wars sounding. Story bits seem fine so far. You're thrust pretty fast into the action. Dialogue is okay. This is supposed to bridge Episode 3 and Episode 4 yes? I had a great time so far with the game. I love 3rd person action games, games like Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, etc. I feel like this game scratches that itch for those type of games quite well.
