Star Wars Outlaws' Director: 'Bad Faith' Discourse About Protagonist's Appearance 'Not Worth Engaging In'

i mean hes right, people need to stop worrying about how fuckable characters are.
I think it's the fact that they on purpose turn characters less attractive to push an agenda and then pretend that they aren't and that she in fact is very beautiful.
If they came out and said straight up that Kay isn't supposed to be attractive, that she has had a rough life that has taken a toll on her and she doesn't really care about her looks and it's part of her character, then people would almost certainly be down with it.

That is exactly the right response. Tell the story they want to tell, make decisions based on story/game reasons not what online clods are complaining about.

People that are bitching about a female character not being pretty enough or whatever, they aren't worth responding to... and if the character were "prettier", guess what, they would just find another reason to not buy the game. That's all there is to it.
Complete nonsense IMO.

Most of us SW fans actively want to buy or enjoy new good SW stuff, and we already had a thread about the lack of ability to physically own this game because of Ubisoft being Ubisoft with online requirement for install, so it wouldn't be people just finding another reason.

Ubi just needed to release a proper offline copy that isn't a bug fest and respect their audience to make their human game models properly depict the human actors they choose to cast...and obviously develop an interesting game idea, which in this situation it looked like they actually did, and if they fix the other two issues on the actual mastered disc, I will certainly be buying a copy, maybe a belated GOTY edition they'll actually get it right.

why do they make ugly characters on purpose? i just dont understand it
Because if the make attractive people a certain segment of society will continously badger them about not being represented or having enough letters in their titles or bending to a niche community of individuals. If you make them unattractive half of the gamers don’t have masterbation materials. He’s right to not engage. It’s their game their vision and as long as they don’t design the game to appease a group and go with their vision of the character than who cares. That or make all future games stick people

If they want you to play as a guy they could of gave us Dash Rendar. If they want a female protag then make her either hot or at least feminine. I was kinda hoping they would nail a Ellen Ripley look or even a Leia or Padme expy but this ain't it.

Even the Female Twi'lek in this game look awful.

Why is IGN even asking that question.

Who gives a fuck what he thinks about internet discourse, ask questions about the game and it's development you numpties

From perspective of western devs, "attractive" characters is considered childish and immature, why? I have no fucking idea.

I'm not even asking them make them "sexy", just dont make them look ugly as fuck.

Here is a character from MH Wilds and is not exactly what would you call "sexy" but doesn't look any where ugly.

You're proving my point... you've just superceded your complaint about the character's looks with other buzzwords that are completely unrelated to character design -- "typical Ubisoft", no physical version, "buggy"... hmm let me guess, you've been underwhelmed by the gameplay too?

So, all you've done is further demonstrate the exact point I was making. Thanks.

I guess my question is why.

Like what is the rationale/reason to go out of your way to make unflattering depictions lately. I am not looking for the agenda or whatever the fuck, but what is the reason they give to justify/explain why they take the model and go, "lol, too pretty - let's roughin it up". Are they claiming it's more realistic? Like more realistic by changing the real person - cause that makes no fucking sense? Is it some weirdo puritan drive to avoid masturbating material like a moral panic? None of this shit makes sense. What is the justification, cause this isn't just hiding ankles or going for more conservative clothing. This is just uglifying the actual models. Conversely, why not pick other models for your character that you don't have to roughin up? Like picking this model and then changing them in less than flattering ways sounds like some weird ass psychological exercise by the lead devs.

Is there some evidence to support this? Because all I ever see is the real person's professionally done headshot with perfect angle and lighting while they are literally posing for it being compared to an in-game screenshot of a character with the worst possible lighting and angle while they are making a dumb face.

Usually the issue is the picture in game is deliberately the worst you could possibly make (like Aloy) or the game itself has very bad facial animations (like ME: Andromeda).

ok, what has he said about the concerns of crappy looking combat? or is he only making this statement for PR points for some.

He's addressing a specific, real, easily source-able, toxic, and stupid talking point about the game. That's it. This isn't a catch-all for all criticism about his game, what would be the point of that??

Don't get me wrong, I'm not buying the game either!! Personally I think the gameplay looks pretty underwhelming! But I'm also not whining about a character "prettiness" design decision, because I have much, much better things to do with my time... like calling people who seriously care about the "prettiness" of a video game character dumb. (y)

But I will take a moment to offer you congratulations for being able to identify marketing for what it is... as that's what the overwhelming majority of game "news" is; an effort to get you to remember the name and release date of gaming products. That's it.

I pray we can have a character creator in Wilds that lets us recreate the NPCs perfectly instead of them using unique assets.

I mean he's mostly right on the appearance. She looks fine.

What is not in bad faith is criticizing the game for having a 20-y/o girl one shot with her wrist soldiers wearing helmets. It'd be dumb if she were a big burly beefcake. It's way dumber when she's essentially the size of an early 2000s heroin-chic popstar.

yes. i was hoping for some actual meaningful info on combat. iv seen nothing. so far it looks pretty horrendous. This as you mention, is just throwing bones to those who want them and drives more engagement about the game on internet forums, articles written and inevitable youtube videos from multiple opinions.

it's not just ugly but "rough" how every Western dev depicts women nowadays. They want them to express hostility, even the decent-looking ones.

For these wackos, a sweet-looking girl is considered "submissive" and that's why most female protagonists make this angry or anguished face as if they hadn't taken a shit for three days.

No, I thought the universe looked pretty cool and was interested, but the quick confirmation of lack of physical ownership instantly made that a roadblock, but one they can easily fix -as lack of ownership for non-gass is a line I haven't crossed even for the amazing Resogun. So it wasn't another reason when it was the first issue, before double woke had even surfaced of them wanting to work with beautiful actors, but then ugly wash them to appease some non-core group in society.

Gamers are neither getting an authentic performance from an actor that really looks less attractive, to bring that to their performance, or the authentic performance and visuals from the more attractive actor that gave their real performance.

And for those of us that buy physical, it is hardly a "reason". Expecting games to be free of glitches and bugs on the disc is a prerequisite of all games, and the only reason it was mentioned is because it undermines physical ownership and Ubi have a terrible track record with such issues in recent years.

She's fine. More than that, actually. It's getting exhausting when it's only the women being singled out for this stupid shit typically from "gameplay first" hypocrites. Go finish yourself with some hentai then go enjoy the game. Until then..

"It makes no sense to me and it's not worth engaging with," he continued. "If you engage with bad-faith people, there's no nuance and no possibility of real dialogue. So all we can do is make the best game possible."

I wish developers would have this mentality with people who constantly complain about lack of diversity, female characters being fit and beautiful and other woke related things. Those people have no interest in a constructive dialogue. They just want games to fit their world-view and ideology and then next time they demand even more.

Game developers should stop hiring Sweet Baby Inc. and other DEI companies and just make the games they want. It doesn't have to be flawless and so polished that exactly no one gets offended by anything.

Right!

So in other words... there are legit complaints about Ubisoft games, including this Star Wars game, that have nothing to do with how the character looks. And those complaints will likely lead to SOME kind of issue with sales of this game.

Thus, in other other words, and like I was saying, there's basically no reason to pay attention to "she's not pretty enough" criticisms. Because there are enough substantive criticisms about this game, and perhaps Ubisoft in general, and "pretty character" bros aren't buying this game anyway. So since Ubisoft has enough to deal with on all fronts in terms of marketing and selling this game, and how they can operate moving forward, it makes sense to focus on those more substantive criticisms to the degree that they can.

Thus... in other other other words... certain bad faith criticisms to not warrant addressing!

Just as the gentleman was saying.

Somewhere along the way people on the internet thought voice actors were supposed to look like their in game characters.

Well, maybe not look like them, but it's fun when there's a resemblance:

This.

For all the people who worry about woke this and woke that, fuck are some of you telling me? Ya'll like Uncharted to fuck Drake? lol

I don't know if I can even say MOST of what I play has characters I'm legitimately attracted to or think look good. This is a non-issue.

Imagine if someone loves BBWs and they are out here trying to talk about the appearance about a game character to a publisher, as if the publisher's job was to feed into their fucking fetish or some shit, go watch porn and move on.

NO CHARACTER, regardless of medium IS UNVERSALLY, 100% Good looking BY ALL.

People are being pretty straightforward that they want a more attractive lead character.
lol ikr

No your whole premise is back to front, and flat out wrong.

Sw fans buy good SW stuff, that is surely not in dispute, hence why Disney paid what they paid, and Ubi licensed this game for a big fee. SW fans are reliable and have been for at least the 47years it's been around.

Ubi are in the business of gaming where selling SP games complete and without bugs and physically on a disc - with physical ownership - for the steep price of £70 is the norm, not the exception which this clown of a director has the authority to fix with this game.

Many games don't meet those other criteria but as they aren't SW and aren't games I'm interested in, I have no reason to consider at all, whereas discussing their double standards of wanting to cast attractive unknown actors but then woke ugly washing them in game is well worth my time to discuss, and not because it is misappropriating attractiveness, but because of the wider issue of the common sense lost by those in positions of development power in this industry, and specifically my favoured above all other fictional worlds: SW.

It's because of their (political) ideology. Mediocrity and ugliness (both of character and physical) should be prefered vs excellence and beauty. So they do it with the face of the character but they really mean the inside, the character of the person. It's a way to divide people in order to control them.

They did the same on Horizon main character, Aloy. The human she is based on is rather pretty, while on the other hand Aloy is an internet meme how ugly she can look at times.

I don't think the character is that bad in and of itself, at worst, she looks a bit cartoony like she came from the mickey mouse universe

However the real model is way more attractive, but I feel like we have the same discussion over and over again about the uglification of women in games.

If they don't want criticism, then perhaps they should use less attractive people to model their game characters.

Grown ups getting mad over jpeg pictures. Get a life man. It's a pixelated art. You won't fk those characters.
It's not about fucking them, it's about aesthetics. Beautiful things are more pleasant to behold and there's nothing wrong with that. It's the reason why classical and renaissance art celebrated beauty. It's the reason why Hollywood leads have more often than not been attractive. People are more drawn to attractive things, it's not just sweaty nerds looking for a fap.

This is what I am saying. Like the act of hiring a model and then going out of your way to change them in less than flattering ways goes way beyond puritan hang ups. This is just straight up weird. Why even hire this model? Why not hire a model more in line to their intent of "realistic looking people".

What would that be exactly? That isn't something that all of us can even agree on to make it sound like its some normal request lol

That isn't a thing we all fucking agree on in real life, why would that change with a fucking video game character?

It's because of their (political) ideology. Mediocrity and ugliness
but, you can think someone is ugly in real life or a game, I'm not sure how subjectivity suddenly turns into "ideology", this just means you don't think something is attractive....

Thats like me saying Sonic, Mario, Tetris and Tom Nook from Animal Crossing supports a "ideology", I mean come ON IT SO CLEAR, look at HOW UGLY THEY ARE

Tom Nook out here ugly as fuck! STOP MAKING HIM UGLY ON PURPOSE! OMGZ!

1. That is a subjective thing, no developer or artist can create any character we all agree is "beautiful", it makes zero sense.

2. This whole Hollywood leads....yea that is also false as you can think someone is ugly from Hollywood too lol the fuck?

This is 'beauty"?

No, that's not my point. Read my comment again. It's an observation on what people have been stating they want in the main character (as outlined in the OP) and the definition of "bad faith". It's about how those don't relate well in this context.

lol yessssssssssssssss! (i laughed hard on this one lol )

Funny thing is, I don't know what you and I would agree with to even say what I like is "attractive" to everyone else (well not to most or something)
I know what I like, but I do not define it as a objective type thing, I understand it is subjective, thus i cannot support an idea that tries to include that in some game under the idea of "beautiful" even if I personally agree that it is.
Someone else may not, but shit that is why those categories even exist in the first place lol So I know you are just making a joke, but if a damn site literally devoted to that doesn't just have 1 thing, but has all those different categories, doesn't that support this idea that clearly, there is not 1 idea of "beautiful"?

Thats nice.

They can say they want it to look any way they want, the developer is right to ignore them.

make your own fucking game.

They can change that character and you'll just get some other group, making a petition and crying over the new look. This is not a fucking law that is being passed, this is a damn video game lol

I'd say this to you even if YOU where the want making the game, I'd tell you to just ignore them as its your game bud. You can't please everyone and no game character even on this fucking site is agreed on by all for being "attractive" or "beautiful"

Or they could create the character to be in line with the woman they hired to do the face scan. Lots of companies do. What I'm seeing from many here is confusion on why the character has been changed from the real life model. As for the idea that a person needs to make their own game to form an opinion on this subject, can't say I agree with you on that. Feedback is part and parcel with creating and marketing a product to customers.

Toys for little kids are pretty. Are they thinking "my barbie is so fuckable"? No, they like their toys because they are pleasant to look at. People like beautiful things from the earliest consciousness. Appreciating beauty is a universal instinct that a few or many warped pseudo-creators aren't going to subvert.

I agree, people like beautiful things, so I don't get why the dumb publisher isn't allowing this sexy to be in the game bruv

like wtf!!!!!??

Someone can have endless feed back crying over all sorts of shit even if they changed the character to your liking, but would it be to MY LIKING? You know, the real, true sexy ?

That game would never release, they would just be changing the character 100x times a day lol

Stop man.

Make your own game and move on. They don't need to change anything for either side...don't like it, play something else that makes pp go hard man.
