Star Wars Outlaws runs "pretty poorly" on the Switch 2 [Update] GWG: "I was wrong"

Oh yeah that's true, for sure.

As long as it runs stable, most players aren't gonna notice things like this.
There's still a good chunk of docked only Switch players, so I imagine their eyes will commit seppuku when they see it on their 4K TV.

That's how I'm gonna be playing it later today. My eyes aren't pussies.

Weird, SW2 has more memory than SS.

I told you this engine is efficient. First game on Switch with RT and it's open world game with RTGI. Impressive stuff.
Different time of day in the Switch 2 shot, this is a bad comparison.
The sun is exactly behind the camera so the rock is not lit slightly from the side like the other shots, thus the detailed normal map (creating fake shadows) is not as visible.

Capped 30 fps. Was that already known?
Not sure.... But I pretty much expect all Switch ports to be around 30fps on current generation AAA titles ports.
Yes it was known. It's in the apology video, even test data is in the apology video

According to at least one source, the port is "pretty good"...

Not sure if you're joking or missed the updated information

Yeah I'm thinking so because because there are cracks details in the rock producing shadows, like in the Switch 2 version the sun is kinda in front of the rock and in the other versions it's in a side and a little behind, very bad take imo

Guess it turns out that ray tracing shit works.

So weird to say "the loss of 60fps", it's not like it was there and then removed, a bit weird to say.

It's like reviewing an Android phone and be like "the loss of AirPlay is a shame"
Nintendo Pushsquare is always a bit like that.

I've been playing the game myself, only 2 hours in. Probably uses FSR which doesn't hold up great at these resolutions, but it looks better than expected. Also runs close to 30 fps enough. Looks and plays like a triple a game from a couple years ago on a steam deck. Pretty impressive what they did with this port thus far.

im saying that releasing a video that you then have to apologize for is the problem. I don't think apologizing for putting out this info to get clickbait attention is acceptable behavior for an outlet.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm in agreement!

Reflections are a lot more stable on the Switch 2 compared to Series S.

Even less noise than PS5. Is the game using Ray Reconstruction...? If not, I guess DLSS acts as a natural denoiser here.

The only difference I can see comes from the static rendering of the water on SW2.

My question is DOES THE WIND EVER DIE DOWN ON THAT PLANET? Every shot I've ever seen it looks like a 20 mph wind is in the background. Devs are like, "Oooohhh, lookie what we can do. BLUSTERING!!!"

Maybe there is some polar vortex (similar to the one on the north pole of Saturn) that causes there to be a persistent wind. I'm sure they could think of some quick lore to explain.

Wait...that's not it.

Dammit....

There we go....

Pro tip: the HDR calibration in the game actually ties back to the switch system level settings HDR calibration when docked. It helped me set up my switch HDR perfectly to match my LG C1 OLED to 800nits brightness and 200nits paper white. Happy about this!

I'm not sure a lot of these console sales are ever truly "apple" comparisons when given full context to interpret. Part of PS2's early momentum was for its DVD player inclusion. The ball was rolling before GCN and the new and powerful Xbox hit the market. And of course the titan that would be known as Grand Theft Auto 3, only on PS2.

Wii was virtually sold out for three years, and while hardware sales had lost momentum in its last full year, the machine was still the best selling Home Console of its generation, beating out the PS3 and Xbox 360 (which saw a spike with its own "casual" initiative: Kinect). Much of that expanded audience either jumped to phones, upgraded to core gamer, or just lapsed completely as there was nothing desirable for, say, a Wii Sports fan to play. The Wii U failure can be measured in many different ways, from the largest classic controller to launch for a home console ever (but with a screen in the middle), to the biggest launch software being a sequel to a game that had launched just a few months ago on 3DS (New Super Mario Bros. 2), and looks identical to New Super Mario Bros Wii. This is a momentum business. If you fall off, it becomes harder to get back up.

Where the Wii wanted to simplify the game concepts and bring everyone back to square one, the Wii U appeared more complex, confusing, and not a necessary upgrade to an experience that can already be had on Wii. To put salt on this wound, Ubisoft's break out hit "Just Dance" would continue to sell the best on the original Wii YEARS after the Wii U's launch (despite being available on both). The expanded audience were still there for the pickings, but was not being enticed by the Wii U. Switch has had success with this audience as sales to Mario Party, Switch Sports, Clubhouse Games, and most notably Ring Fit Adventure (not a portable friendly game) all attest to. They ain't gone, and they don't get fed much, but they sure keep things alive for a long long time.

So for the broader discussion earlier about if Nintendo launched a powerful console like the big boys, they'd win, that depends on so many factors, and you have to ask if the traditional console players are even really winning at their game. Studio Closures despite millions of copies sold for games, out of control budgets, less risk, less innovation, more games based on style over substance. The 'Switch' style of hardware is slowly becoming the standard due to its success. But as usual, the execs don't seem to quite understand it, and the focus is on empty shell hardware to put yesteryear products on. The Switch 2 is a home console with the capability of being taken on a plane, to work, or to a friend's house for some tabletop action. Play your way was the Switch motto. The Switch 2 is too large to be a true handheld. It's more akin to a Laptop's convenience and accessibility over a home PC, rather than a phone that can be stored in one's pocket and be used in short rapid bursts.

Anyway, on topic, Star Wars Outlaws is looking pretty passable on the Switch 2. Too bad about the Game Key Card thing though. Hopefully Nintendo addresses that problem with cheaper physical solutions for third parties to take advantage of in the future.
yes except the casuals didn't come back to the Switch. Switch Sports and Ring Fit sold good but nowhere near Wii Sports REsort and Wii Fit levels despite a 50% higher install base.

Wii was more than a casual console too. It was a cultural lightning in a bottle craze.

Wii U was also an expensive concept and had more than one mixed message. GAmepad added a lot of cost. Without that they probably selling it for $100 less. Meanwhile one of its messages was forget motion control. Use a big massive Gamepad that resembles a handheld.

A second confusing message was putting out a 3ds and a Gamepad and saying buy both. ...but why does someone need the equivalent of 2 handhelds?

Definitely agree with the Super Mario Bros overload especially in conjunction with the notion Nintendo was trying to sell everyone a 3ds and every family a Wii U. And don't forget Super Mario 3d Land came out ~8 months prior and not exactly a wildly different title.

I would say it's a hits driven business because it's the hits that drive momentum.

Just Dance is a very specific title (which feels more like an annual music expansion pack) for a specific audience that wasn't going to buy another console to play Just Dance anyway. The exception that proves the rule. IT's a title that doesn't depend on console power either. And even more natural for it to sell better on a system with 100mn install base than a new system just launching.

That's just Twitter in general.

yeah but the amount of Nintendo fanboy accounts there are is insane... and they're all verified, meaning they are probably grifting for that twitter revenue, so they are just constantly posting the most idiotic shit 🙃

Just realized his name is NintenGOD lol

Yeah, I don't know. Every time I read console Twitter it's always something stupid and not worth anyone's time. I stick to official personalities like Harada and Geoff.

seems fine

Well it's NintenGOD he's one of the fanboys spreading lies about Switch 2 being as powerful as PS5 and many non-tech savvies believing him, he now denies it but I literally blocked him on X for it. I'd take all his posts with a grain of salt.

... Did he turn down the brightness on the Series S footage in Premiere Pro?

Like, listen, I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy, but this shit looks hella tampered with.

I'm not even sure what he's trying to show either. probably nothing, the footage is probably vague and weird on purpose to druve engagement of people arguing in the replies.

dude is clearly engagement farming

Yes, and if I call him out he and his fanboys (he has fanboys) will get annoying. This is him:

DF: "PS5 version is clearly sharper and runs at 60 fps, but Switch 2 IQ looks better even at lower resolution"

NintenGOD: *Takes a snapshot of the "but Switch 2 IQ looks better" moment*... SEE SEE IT'S IN THE SAME BALL PARK OR EVEN BETTER THAN PS5

I didn't realise just how cheap this game is.

In the UK it's £43 and that includes the season pass.

I don't have many good things to say about Ubisoft in recent years but full credit for the pricing of this. Makes it barely more expensive than the year old XSX/PS5 versions.

All this thread shows is that even on the 4th month after release with barely any games out... fanboys here are still afraid of the switch2

How is the game. Is it good for someone who hated modern disney star wars. This is supposed to be in the OG timeline right? Is it gritier? I know the main character is a woman but she is a rogue so she shouldn't be like all powerful girlboss/godlike character. Its a lot of stealth so hope that means she is normal.

The characterization isn't really an issue in this game; her plot armor is just as thick as any other video game protagonist. It is an Ubisoft game through and through, mechanically speaking. I have probably accrued 10 hours of play over the past 10 months I have owned the game, and it just never sticks. Of course, this is just my take and many would probably disagree with me. For context, I was a big fan of Ghost of Tsushima, fell off of Horizon (both of them), loved God of War (both of them), loved Shadow of Mordor.

Bruh? Are you being serious? I'm laughing my ass off at in the year 2025 there are still "fanboys". And "seething" 😂🤣😂……… I feel sorry for you.

Why am I the fanboy one? I simply stated a fact that Snoy will stop doing consoles before Nintendo does, you started calling me a moron and shit lol.

What Switch 2 games so far have beaten the S version?, serious question.

the Switch 2 has DLSS, which means image quality can sometimes be better than on Series S, even if the Series S runs at a higher resolution.
this is then often used by fanboy accounts to spin the narrative that the Switch 2 "beats" the Series S... ignoring the often dramatic settings reductions, lower internal resolution, big framerate differences etc.

but the post you quoted is just confusing as fuck, as I legit don't even know what he's trying to show in that comparison.

So I picked up a Switch 2 copy. I had gotten the game when it came out on PS5 but had sorta stopped playing early in it because I got distracted by something else. Having it portably will make playing it a little easier for me, so that's why I got the Switch 2 one.

Definitely a downgrade from PS5 Pro :messenger_grinning_sweat: but yeah, it is stable. It runs well for what it is. Fortunately maybe I'll actually get further in it this time, because it has the cloud saves. When I'm at home, I can play it on PS5, and on the go, I can play the Switch 2 version.

I think the game itself is actually pretty good, but booting it up again...man, this character. She really was hit with an ugly stick. I hate looking at her face.

Character design what sets me back, specially after seeing the actual actress they used as reference...

Some perspectives

~9W switch 2 VS ~17W (?) Steam deck OLED (more powerful than original SD)

It's not equivalent settings but for how it looks, whatever Ubisoft did was the right call to perform that good. Could maybe be a future patch for PC portables
