ROTJ is unfortunately quite poorly written and directed. Pacing is really bad. The opening segment has some cool ideas like the Sarlacc pit, but it's staging lets it down. The Dagobah section feels pointless; Luke visits just to see Yoda die. Speeder bikes are cool, but again, not that exciting to actually watch. The Ewok scenes cemented the incompetence of the Empire for all time. And the less said about the 'twins' twist, the better.

The one thing the movie really has going for it is the savagery of Luke vs Vader. Beyond that, it's mostly notable for being an immense anticlimax. Empire raised the stakes and made the world feel truly dangerous. Jedi proceeds to scrub away the weight and darkness it had established. Resolutions come too easy, the characters are too chummy with each other in a way that feels forced. Even Vader looks a bit cuddly under the mask.

They made a second Death Star and a Star Destroyer got destroyed by an A-Wing. It can't get much more incompetent than that.

Couldn't have said it better

If they legit enjoyed the movie it being new doesn't change that.

The reactions of Phantom Menace were overwhelmingly positive at first.

Not to say Force Awakens will be bad, it's just these "omg best ever" tweets don't carry all that much wait. We're still well within the honeymoon period of ultra-hyped media where everything is amazing.

"
This will begin to make things right
" is the first line of spoken dialogue in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, and I suppose that is true.

And it begins. Hopefully I don't some how get spoiled by random things.

Im too addicted to the internet, but no more youtube videos on the movie, twitter, or message boards.

I mean even here might have some ass spoil stuff.

Luckily the debate is tomorow and that will keep me ocupied............unless trump wants to go monster heel on us and spoil it.

If I like a movie after just watching it I'm pretty sure I'll like it 2 weeks from now.

Sure, but I was referring to what you were saying regarding whether people will like it just because it's new. A ton of people loved Phantom Menace after premiere day precisely because it was "new Star Wars".

EDIT: Don't mean to be a downer. I'm super hyped for Force Awakens, but I'm not trusting first-impressions tweets just yet. There's always people raving about big-name movies on Twitter just after the premiere.

Imma cry just reading stuff like this.

People, many longtime fans, just walked out of a new Star Wars movie; of course they're smiling. They haven't had time to digest it, their hype is still coloring their impressions.

I suspect longtime fans would be the most critical. At the end of the day people probably just enjoyed an entertaining movie.

Prequels may make people less inclined to go full hyperbole mode on TFA reactions. And there's always good and bad reactions, usually people just choose to listen to the good so they can remain hyped. TPM had some very negative first impressions, but people ignored it because they couldn't fathom the new Star Wars being bad.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is a strong, promising kickoff. As a standalone, I'd rank it #3 in the series.

Adam F. Goldberg @adamfgoldberg
Ranking: 1. Empire Strikes Back. 2. Force Awakens. 3. A New Hope. 4. Return of the Jedi. 5 - 8 Prequels. Thank you JJ. #TheForceAwakens

I don't believe that. I worked at a movie theater at the time, and even back then I was taken aback at how awful Jake Lloyd's acting was on first viewing. It was a real turning point for me -- not at how bad Lloyd's performance was -- but at how I took for granted directors frp, other films who managed to get decent performances from their actors -- Kramer vs. Kramer, E.T., Stand By Me.

Was it really positive feedback, or just denial. I did like the costumes and set designs, especially on Coruscant, but I felt that there were alot of missed opportunities. Heck, Jar Jar didn't offend me as much as the dialogue that was being delivered by all the human actors. No one was unscathed. I really felt bad for the leads in Phantom Menace, as well as the sequels.

Better than ANH? WTF?=O

Guys, I need help.

I'm going to a midnight premiere with some friends tomorrow night and they want everyone to dress up as characters from the movies. I really don't like dressing up but I don't want to be that nofunallowed.jpg guy so I'm trying to find a costume I could get together for free (or super cheap). I'm drawing a blank though.

Anyone got any idea?

I dont buy the argument that people will like it just because its star wars. Anyone at the premiere tonight lived through TPM release and know whether or not they are being blind.
