Holy shit did someone try to say Mages have always been a good class in WoW? They were a fucking joke for over an entire expansion to the point the only way a Mage was raiding is because he was well liked in a guild
Joke post? Mages never "sucked" in WoW since before spell power was in the game. They were the best DPS in the game in Naxx and AQ, and top 3 in BWL. The reason so many mage sucked in BC (the expansion you are talking about), is because they A) demanded on staying pure Fire and B) didn't know shit about min-maxing or theory-crafting and had to get used to it. Any mage who was min-maxing prior to BC; when the only place to go to theorycraft about your class was worldofraids which was an IRC channel (pre-nax) did well. Were they OP like Hunters and Destro locks in BC? No, but they could get top 3 easily. Wotlk was obviously, dominated by mages, and so far in Cata Mages are once again back at the top. They started out a bit slow until they quickly acquired gear from the joke raids and dominated hard-modes.
Because it's more fun to play a warlock for that person? Just because WoW offers race, gender, faction, server changes, etc doesn't mean they are all homogenized. If Bioware all of a sudden put a real dollar amount on that ACrespec, would it be fine then? We don't even have the specific details, so how can we complain about our own internal speculation?
Edit: The argument that they will just let one class be unbalanced because the counterpart AC is balanced is beyond ridiculous.
I am not talking for casual players, I am talking for competitive. I would never, ever, recruit a class that brought nothing to my raid a different, superior class couldn't provide. It would make no sense at all. Now if that weaker class had a buff, or some type of advantage the other didn't, I would bring them. At this present time, that is not had SWTOR is designed.
I don't think you understand how the game works. I never said they are going to let one class be "unbalanced" (show me an MMO where thats not the case btw). I said they are going to treat Advance Classes like tree's instead of classes. If a Smuggler can hop between Gunslinger and Scoundrel, why would they try to balance Scoundrel DPS and Gunslinger DPS, when they can just make Scoundrel dedicated to healing? Thus taking away variety.
Why do I think this? Because it was already starting to happen before beta went down. By the end of this beta, good luck getting into a group if you were a Smuggler that didn't heal, or a Sith Warrior that didn't tank.
Anyway, I will wait and see how they implement it. From what I heard today, you may not be able to hop back and forth (maybe a set number of respecs). I can only hope.
