Star Wars: The Old Republic [Releasing Date: Dec 20 NA/EU - NDA Lifted]

Game has awful performance. Can't even maintain 60fps at 1080p with a 2500k and GTX 570 both OC'd.

And that's without AA. Game doesn't even look good either, wtf.

It also has the worst model and texture popin I've EVER seen in a game. Like, it makes UE3 games look really good on that front.

Got in and tried a bit. The server queues are insane as is to be expected with a free stress test, plus the timing estimates are way off the real numbers.

Here are some quick notes:
  • The game prompted me for US servers first. Kind of confusing.
  • Inventory management is poor. Think budget Korean MMOs. Think RuneScape. Bad
  • Camera control is twitchy. Can be adjusted though.
  • Graphics are tolerable. Some very nice textures here and there, but the models are poor and animations are intolerably janky. Most effects are OK.
  • Voice acting is sometimes excellent, horrible at others. Subtitling with non-English space races is jarring. I'd say this is a wasted effort on their part.
  • Character models and their voices do not match up. There was this supposed hardass Vexx. His model looks like a Jonas brother member, his voice acting is like Griff from BttF. Blech.
  • On-the-fly instances seem to work.
  • Quests weren't exactly thrilling.
  • GUI looks ancient and cumbersome. It looks like DCUO, and that is a console game at heart.
  • Vast majority of what npcs drop is trash. Yet there is no instant sell trash button on the interface. The developers should scout Rift for better ideas.
  • The default damage and notification fonts are fugly.

Let me first start out by saying I am a huge KOTR fan but hate MMO's. I signed up for the beta this weekend expecting the worse, and so far I am loving it. I know it will probably change later but for now I can just play a huge RPG and not have to rely on other players.

We will see how I feel later, but I am loving the game for now. Though on the wierd side in game my monitor has what appears to be a dead pixell but I only see it in this game. It's not present anywhere else?

Think it's there for everyone, was a bit of chat about it on General in game.

This whole password and security setup has been more of a pain in the ass than I've ever had to deal with.

A couple of weeks ago, it reset everything, I had to come up with a new password, but I had to enter my old password first and it wouldn't recognize it. Once I finally figured it out, then they had me pick 5 security questions to answer. I finally get to where I can try this game out for the first time today, and it won't let me in until I tell them the last name of my favorite actor. I never even answered that as one of my security questions to start with. I don't have a favorite actor. How can I answer a question I don't have an answer for? I tried to call the toll free number, but they said all their agents are busy, call back later, and they hung up on me.

Are you sure there is not an option to choose another question...their dark blue on black set-up makes it hard to see that little arrow that brings other choices sometimes...

OK, must have missed that.

But why is that function not present when I talk to a store NPC myself?

Yea, stuff like this, should be put in. Not even wow does it unless you have an addon(sells all your white/grey items automatically at a vendor).Thats a good idea i must admit, simple. To send your companion to sell trash as i remember is there is a little button next to his face/icon. He goes away for a minute and comes back. This was from last beta build though. Not sure if they changed it.

Well got my Trooper to level 10 and only now realized that only the heal advanced class gets the badass big guns, but not the tank. Booooo. :(

The framerate in this game gave me a serious headache. I mean it really physically game me a headache. It doesn't seem to matter if I set the graphics all the way up or all the way down, the framerate is still horrible. Maybe it's just Korriban. I'll try another area later.

Here's my what's in my PC. Maybe you guys can tell me what's causing it.

Win 7 64
4 GB DDR2 RAM
Phenom 8450 3x 2.1 Ghz
Radeon HD 6950 2GB

So as Imperial Agent how do I get the cover silhouette to show? Can I just hit F near a tree if the cover shadow doesn't show up on my HUD? The game's not consistent in letting me take cover. Sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesn't.

If you target an enemy the silhouette will show up.

Lots of sort of superfluous recorded dialogue... why are there three choices for accepting a quest? I get "I'll do it!", "Yeah, I'll do it." and "Fuck you, I'll do it!", but I have to press Escape to choose not to take the quest?

Played for a good few hours today as a smuggler. Think I'm level 11 and just left the starting areas. Really enjoying it so far. Only problem is I don't know if I want to continue playing this weekend if my characters not going to carry over.

I have no other options. I turned the brightness and contrast up all the way up on my monitor and I'm getting the same question from both the game launcher and the login page at swtor.com.

I have no options to change that question and I'm almost positive that's a question that I didn't answer. I've put in random names of actors that I kinda sorta like, but I don't have 1 actor that's must-see for me and that's why I didn't pick that question as one of my security questions.

I've tried about 4 times to call that customer service number and they're still saying they're busy and hang up on me.

Oh well.

No. Sidequest let you decline the quest. Usually the bottom choice and it will say something like "not right now[decline]"

Oh, thought you were asking which was better!

I do this:

"client_settings.ini" file located in your users\____\appdata\local\swtor\ etc folder

AntiAliasingLevel = 2
enableadvenvirolighting = true
DebugAdvEnviroLighting = true

Wow, thanks for this, Billychu! The visuals went from "Not so great" to "Pleasing" :)

Tried a Jedi and found it a bit boring. Went with a Bounty Hunter instead, and now I'm having lots of fun. I'm finding the skills to be fun to use, and I'm actually finding a use for most of them. Love running up to a enemy and smacking them with the Jetpack punch.

Also pleasantly surprised by the dialogues. Judging from how I usually play MMOs, I expected to just click through all the dialogues, but I'm really enjoying the story stuff. It's great that they keep it pretty short and to the point.

What sort of effect do the bolded ones have on performance?

Got to level 9 Sith Inqui and it's pretty good, I like! I thought I was going into this and cancelling my pre-order, but now I am thinking this is a keeper.

It's crazy how much opinions differ in this thread. I would suggest everyone at least finish the starting zone and go to Coruscant/Dromund Kaas before making final judgements. The game opens up quite a bit then, and even more once you get your ship. I also recommend forcing AA to anyone complaining about the graphics. It's stylized and not everyone will like it, but AA definitely makes a difference.

Hmmmm that crashes my PC unfortunately, comes up with not responding. :[

Damn, I didn't realize the game didn't install the other day. I get an error (that the actual message no other helpful tips) on installation of Main Assets 7 at 45%

Tried 4 times now, wouldnt care if this wasnt the lst build and I imagine I will have this problem in the retail version

I've already been in 2 beta's without a problem

Umm...okay after about 10 minutes of playing I'm completely turned off. This game has no polish to it whatsoever. This is why non WoW MMO's fail. Even WoW was a million more times polished than this at release. Unless they have a SERIOUSLY overhaul planned I'm not buying this game, ever.

First off, animation is...barely there. I had to stop and stare to see if my character even had an idle animation because he looked so still and lifeless. Movement does not look natural at all.

In my first fight, I couldn't even tell what was going on. I right clicked an enemy, used my cover ability, but it didn't do what it suggested it would. Finally I get it to work so I try my other abilities...they don't do anything. In fact, my character is just kind of sitting there doing nothing despite me trying to attack. But I notice I seem to be doing damage...but my character isn't even doing attack animations! What?!?

This is unacceptable for a game this close to release. I quit after that first fight. For all the time this game has been in development, the game should NOT be in this state. I can't believe this. I wanted an amazing Star Wars MMO and all I get is the next big unpolished pile of garbage. What a waste.

Huh? You literally fought 1 enemy in a BETA test and decided it was a "big unpolished pile of garbage"?

I'm pretty sure the game has attack animations, and if you didn't see any it was perhaps glitched.

The game comes out next month. With them letting everyone in, this is obviously more of a stress test than a beta test. Unless they plan on completely adding in new idle animations, new walk/run animations (especially for mouse turning, good god), and make combat more intuitive and less...problematic as what I experienced just now, then this game is going to fail hard.

Polish, polish, polish. That is what makes a game successful. This game lacks it.

I played the beta a month ago and it had attack animations. I'm pretty sure they didn't take them out.

How can you criticize the combat after 1 fight with a class you had never played before? It's utterly beyond me, but if your patience is so low then it's probably better to stay away.

Huh, so for this beta I decided to give Trooper a try, thought it would be boring but the story was suprisingly good. One big difference I found between getting my trooper to 10 and my inquisitor to 10 was that I no trouble getting to lvl 10 even without doing any of the heroics, just via quests, I even missed a few bonus quests. On the other, my inquisitor did every quest possible and both heroics and was still only able to get to lvl 9, had to grind out ~1/3 of a level to get to 10.

My question is, did they tweak the xp of the starting worlds since the last weekend beta? Or has Ordo always been easier/gives more xp than Korriban?

If combat isn't intuitive, that's a problem. Do you know how many people try WoW and quit early on because they feel THAT game isn't intuitive, when it basically holds your hand for you now? It's staggering.

If combat doesn't work and feel polished right away for someone who's been playing MMO's for over 10 years, there's a problem. This game is not ready for release.

I guess Huttball is buggy. Sound was way off. Was no fun at all.

And yeah, animation feel pretty bad at first. You kinda get used to it, but it seems unfinished.

Have you ever played a MMO at launch... ever?

Same problem... except I never forgot or changed my password. At first, it was asking me to answer the security question because "it didn't recognize my pc"... even though it's the same one. Now it doesn't even give me that prompt anymore, but it still won't let me log in until I answer the security question.

btw I'm also getting the same vague question What is your favorite activity? every single time. I'm pretty sure I never answered that.
