Starfield Was Planned For PS5 Prior To Microsoft's ZeniMax Acquisition, FTC Says

Not only was it coming to PlayStation, I believe Sony were close to getting a timed exclusivity on it like they got with Deathloop and another title that eludes me (edit: Ghostwire: Tokyo).

Notice that since then, "Timed Exclusivity" hasn't really been a buzz word within the community/industry? They aren't really as much of a thing anymore except for the Epic Store, in the console space there is a real war going on and full exclusivity is where it's at now.

Ms could have outbid Sony to get those 24 month exclusives themselves. As per that leaked email, they are not interested in a healtthy bidding war. They want to extinguish the competition by buying the publisher outright.

Sony could also have bought Bethesda when they were offering themselves up.

As Microsoft becomes more and more indefensible people seem to find themselves becoming experts at developing new ways to bend over backwards just to kiss their ass.

How dare Microsoft push their first party studios to make content exclusive to their console? That’s completely unprecedented in the Industry!

Sony always wants to buy timed exclusivity. Microsoft has gotten boned by it for the last gen. Probably part of what has pushed MS to buy Bethesda/Zenimax and ABK. Microsoft might not be good to gobble up stuff, but Sony has been no saint either the last decade or so signing up exclusivity deals to keep games off XBox. I am not saying buying ABK is the answer, but there needs to be something to make Sony sweat and be competitive through means that are not paying to keep games off other platforms.
This is kinda a shallow way of looking at it.

Buying timed exclusives... is competing. Just like paying for an ad spot in the Superbowl. Paying for a Superbowl doesn't stop your competition from doing the same. Buying out the publishers... that is not competing anymore, it's attempting to kill off the competition entirely.

There is a difference.

Here is another way to look at it. How much do you think sony paid for timed exclusivity? $50M? $100M? Here is what a timed exclusive deal looks like. Hey, if you make your game exclusive to our console for a year, instead of taking 30% off the game's sales, we wi take only 20%, and we will put $10M towards the marketing of the game and push it on all our outlets. Then the IP owner looks at that and realizes that considering how well the game is likely to sell on the PS platform due to the user base size and the fact that its gamers actually buy games...they would be making a lot of money. So they agree to it.

Now here's a question, MS spent $7B buying Bethesda... have any idea how many timed exclusives they could have paid for with that amount?

And the st par about sony having to compete in some other way..makes no sense... sony first party is only (arguably) second to Nintendo in value and output. They reason sony can make such deals is because they have successfully consistently grown their install base. But even then,MS can still compete without buying out publishers. Eg... you think MS couldn't have paid Bethesday $500M to make Starfeid timed exclusive for one year and also be on gamepass?

But you do know that this applies to both sides?
Enjoy a vale of tears, especially on Twitter, when the MS shills will be howling that the deal is dead.
To be perfectly clear, i don't even have a xbox.
It's just that Sony fanboys are acting like it's the end of the world if Microsoft get's Activision.
Same as the Epic vs Apple battle, while hating Apple i was happy to see them kicking Epic's ass.

Sometimes it's just fun to see the world burn......

Better then full exclusive right now. But that one was always a rumour.

But people want to make Sony look bad. Haven’t people realised that ABK itself signed all these timed exclusive deals?
I'll sign stuff too if money was on the table with things like this.
ABK wasn't signing stuff for charity reasons.

Dear god this overdrive shill.

Imagine posting 6.5 shill posts a day for ms for 2 years straight.

I have a post history with me being positive about both Xbox and PlayStation. Including some recent ‘ms shill’ posts praising FFXVI 😀

Yours when it comes to Xbox? Dire.

I see these insults for what they are. An inability to offer a sensible, logical rebuttal so you take the easy way out.

Cheers anyway. You tried

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Notice the lack of replies to this?

Peculiar isn't it?

ok I'll play the devils advocate.

Starfield, the next major Xbox console-exclusive from the makers of Skyrim and Fallout, was originally planned to release on PlayStation 5, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Planned to release is not the same as announced to release. Marvel also 'planned to release' a Spider Man game on Xbox but they (Xbox) refused the offer.

I brought this up in another thread about timed exclusives. Would it really be ok if Microsoft used 7, 10, 20, 50 or even the 70 billion to get times exclusives of many of the major games releasing year after year? Like think of FF , resident evil, CoD, Fifa, etc. And a long list of games.

Would that really be acceptable? I don't think it would be in any way.

Like I said in other posts, Microsoft can really fuck other companies if they could with their cash even if they go through more legitimate routes.

I mean, why would they not have it planned for PS5? By the time that reveal happened, PS5 and Series X was already a thing, so I'm sure it was in development for many systems like Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, ESO etc

So I can't really say this is news to me or most tbh, we kind of already put that together as I doubt its development was like 3 years or something lol So....maybe MS should have not did this if they had some long term plan to buy Activision or something, maybe it would make sense to buy a publisher, state you'll keep all things multiplatform and when the time comes, you just argue that IN THE PAST we did that or something. So its hard to argue with what the FTC is saying when something like Starfield clearly isn't coming to PS5, they can simply conclude they'll do the same with Activision.

I have no issue with that personally. The same way I have no issue with ABK itself selling itself to MS. It’s their choice. It’s their company. They can sign deals with whoever they want and they can sell themselves to whoever they want.

Spiderman games used to be multiplatform but now Sony not letting Insomniac to make it multiplatform.

FF games also exclusive to PS5 plus Sony has 20% shares in SE.

Sony can make games exclusive but if MS doing same to boost their ecosystem, they evil ruining industry. You all some goofy clowns seriously lol

Comparing a single exclusive game to a publisher (with a hole host of games) and you call other people clowns?

I don't see what the problem with that is. The games will come eventually. They just get it earlier.

I do have a problem though when compies buy games out completely. Or even worse, outright buy the IPs. I swear I have sleepless nights knowing that MSnow owns the Doom IP. I just do not trust MS when it comes to managing their IPs.

Of course. Sony would have done the same thing. Why would mS put these games on PS when they own the Xbox brand? For CoD they are offering 10 year contracts. It’s fine, duh

What I find troubling about you is that you know whats up.

I could understand an ignorant person. But you aren't... so it must only mean that at times you take up arguments just or the sake of arguing... even when there isn't a point to be made?

Yeah I agree with Pete here. Square claimed the same thing with Final Fantasy 16 being PS5 exclusive. Fewer platforms means they can focus more on optimization.
Considering how low the res ended up being in XVI and how badly it performs despite being exclusive, it doesn't really feel like that excuse pans out much though. Not trying to argue your point as I agree with it honestly, but you'd think FFXVI, which turned out to be a great game thankfully, would have turned out to be better optimized if somehow supporting only one platform helped with that.

Didn’t Sony tried to buy starfield as a timed exclusive first? You can’t tell me they wouldn’t make it an exclusive given the chance 😂

I thought it took two parties to sign a contract? ABK does it for the money but Sony did it to starve their competitor at the beginning of the generation.
If it was for the money, Sony wouldn't have a single deal to their name, because Microsoft could and would outbid them every time (and it'd cost only a fraction of what an acquisition costs).

How do people not get this? The 'Sony moneyhats everything' narrative only makes sense if they're the ones with the most money and everyone knows they're not.

I really hope this deal goes trough.
If this is the way people are acting now it would be glorious to see the tears if it actually goes trough.
I buy all consoles and PC as I enjoy everything, but this will shed a lot of tears. I look forward to watching if that happens.

Considering that Sony was trying to moneyhat it, obviously there was a version of it in some shape or form.

Cannot wait to play as Godd Howard was able to sell it to me not only as Game Pass Upgrade but also on Steam :messenger_grinning_sweat:
