Tobe's Vertical Adventure

Gonna leave my impressions of this one since many people here are saying it aint worth it for some mysterious reason.

Keep in mind that at the time i write this post ive only beaten Tobe's Story Mode (4 worlds with 4 levels each) getting 100% of rescues and treasure. There's another Story mode with a different character and another Story mode exclusive to co-op.

Im really loving it. The art style is wonderful, the 16bit graphics are gorgeous, the levels freel rewarding and are never frustrating in the least. People mentioned controls; i had 0 problems with them. Tobe controls perfectly and yes, sometimes there's an emphasis in timing jumps just right and whatnot, but every great platformer in the vein of this one is like that. Really feels like a new-old Genesis game. The only weird choice i found is to map the action botton to "down" on the d-pad, but you only use it to open chests and enter doors, so you'll get used to it.

You control your character by running, rolling, wall-jumping, grabbing on ledges, etc. Your usual platformer deal.

The challenge is to get to the bottom of the level to get the big treasure, while at the same time rescuing pet bunnies and other animals (reminded me of Sonic) and collecting gems and other smaller treasures.

Once you open the big chest at the bottom, big red timer shows up and you need to go back to the surface as fast as you can, metroid style (with spikes going up to put pressure on you in the last level of each world) . While in this "escape" mode, the levels crumble and change, breaking down walls and revealing new platforms and such. Some of the treasure and pets are only accesible during this part, but its easy to recognize wich treasure you can get only on the "escape" part since the walls that crumble are different from the others.

Dont know if i made myself clear there, but what it means is that you wont be busting your head going "how the fuck do i get this chest?" while going down the level. You'll instantly realize that the walls near it will crumble and that you'll get it later on while escaping the level and going through that same part. It really works, feels rewarding and never punishing.

The levels are varied enough in each different world, and while the enemies themselves dont vary too much from each other (or show any real threat at all), there's always a small new mechanic implemented that keeps things fresh.

You have two items (crucial to get some of the treasures or escape the levels in time); chains and balloons, and they serve different purposes. The chain allows you to throw it up to stick in a roof and fall down so you can climb on it (like a rope), and the balloons work as a parachute, since you take damage when falling from long heights. You start each level with a number of these but you can collect more in the level itself.

Only other thing that you should know is that while the keyboard controls arent customizable, they are really comfy for once. WASD to move and "J" "K" and "L" for the different actions. Of course it plays a better with a joystick.

aaand that's pretty much it! im finding the game to be really really fun and more than worth it at that price point. Kinda sad it isnt getting the attention it deserves.

Game is great, so if you're feeling like playing a good ol pixelart platformer, there's no reason not to get it at $4.5

the only complaint i can put together is that the game might be a bit on the short side (took me 2 hours to finish the first story mode), but with two SP story modes and another exclusive one for co-op (wich i cant wait to play since i figure its the real meat of the game, apparently there's some co-op moves involved and required to advance), i think you'll get more than your money's worth.

So it's an Altitude free weekend, and no one appears to be playing Altitude (though two people on my friends list have it on their wish list). It's at least fairly fun even if I never play it!

I have it. If you want to play with me, drop me a PM.

Buy it. If you're on the fence, buy it.

I've never played a Civ game before V, and while I've only played the tutorial for the better part of a day (nearly ten hours) I feel pretty confident in saying this is easily one of the best games I've played in a good long while. The hours have literally melted away as I took the Iroquois from a basic tribal society with one village to a world dominating super power. I won the game by the 1930's, by seizing the other super powers capital city. The game could have stopped there but it gives you the option to keep playing, which I'm doing right now.

The tutorial plops you down in the world with one other super power and a bunch of city states. The city states will behave according to their nature (some will be merchants, some will be war-like, etc.) and your actions. You can try to win the city states over by helping them with barbarians, protecting them from other world powers or city states, giving them gold or providing them with units. Early in my game I acted pretty benignly. I helped all of the surrounding city states out with the barbarian hordes and outposts that harried them early in the game but I didn't overtly try to win their favour.

I expanded fairly quickly, took over the central portion of the eastern continent/land mass, and eventually bumped into to the other power. I was playing it pretty peaceful but then one of the new city states I encountered were kind of dick-ish and wanted one of my allies wiped out and was offering a reward for doing so. If not me the other power, who they were allied with. I take exception to this and surround the hostile city state with my forces, once it's no longer allied to the other power, I quickly swoop in, lay siege to the city and take over. All hell broke loose when I started laying siege to the city state. The other power told me to back off, I didn't and basically the entire world erupted into war with every allied city state and power declaring war against one another. So all of the sudden I'm fighting the initial hostile city state, then the power and ever other city state allied with it.

I push the other power back into its border, crush two other city states, consolidate and then slowly take over every portion of the world except for two friendly city states. Not counting the annexed citie, I had several cities with two major centers producing all of my cultural achievements and wealth. The others were essentially generated to block the other pwoer from expanding and to help my units heal. It's not how I intended to play, I initially only had a large ground force to deal with all of the barbarian tribes harassing my city and those I was helping out. I didn't intend on becoming some kind of global despot but it was pretty fun!

The part I liked the most was when I was near the end game, amassing troops and artillery along the other powers border, having the other leader attempting some basic diplomacy in which I was completely duplicitous.

"Hey, what's with all of the troops along our border?"

"Oh don't worry, they're just passing through"

"Hey, why are buying all of that land near our territory? Taking over places we need to expand to?"

"Oh I'm sorry, I won't do that anymore, my bad!"

I've played the game for ten hours straight and I'm still technically in the tutorial. Wait, what?

I never really got into Civ games (might have tried Civ 4 and thought it was slow or awkward), but I really liked how Civ V seemed streamlined and easy to get into. I actually finished an entire game in it.

Well I like the music for cthulhu so far. the humor isn't really funny so far just more like "...wut"

Yeah I didn't find Cthulu or Breath of Death's humor particularly funny. It was actually sort of cringeworthy in spots.

Weird, under my purchase history it says Steam-Complimentary right at the top above the Altitude one. Are the two connected? Never seen that happen before.

It might be because of the free weekend.

They weren't laugh out loud funny, but I got a few smiles out of the games as they poked at some of the common tropes of that style of rpg.

Yeah I have the one at the very top and I see one at the very bottom (first "purchase") which I'm pretty sure wasn't there before. Oh well nothing seems to be any different at least.

Playing Cthulu now. Pretty fun and while the battle system is based off of old school RPGs like Dragon Quest, they have a lot of really interesting elements (combos, choices in upgrades, unique status effects like insanity etc.) It is pretty difficult though, and damn there are a lot of random battles. That's one thing from older RPGs that people don't miss. The humor is great, I can't wait to trade-in this game soon thanks to the run button.

There are a set number of random battles in each area, you can clear them out and then explore freely. A nice tactic for leveling is to sit near save spots and just manually trigger all the fights in the dungeon to get them out of the way in safety.

I can't stop playing Civ 5, it's almost 4 in the morning here. Such an awesome game but I've got to ask, am I always some random historical hero (I know that there's a mode that allows you to choose which nation/civilization you'll lead) leading their civilization on this amorphous, Pangaea-like land mass against a completely random assortment of opposing nations/civilizations?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is if there's a mode that allows me to replay in the actual regions these civilizations/nation states sprung up in. Can I recreate or reshape actual history? Is this a reason I should be taking a hardrer look at Europa Universalis 3 (which I own) or Shogun 2: Total War (which I do not).

While i really liked this and thought it was an excellent idea, what ended up happening because i was so scared of running out of MP while exploring is every single area i went to, is i just grinded out the amount of enemies i needed to and then explored. So for me in BoDVII it got a little old after a while, but that's just me.

Bought! Very nice post. You should become a salesman Salsa, you sold me on quite a few games lately haha.

Yeah, I just downloaded the client onto another machine a few days ago, and it added a "Steam Complimentary" to my licenses.

I downloaded it to my laptop about a couple weeks ago but this is at the very top of my list, after I bought most of my summer sale games on the laptop. Guess it was late adding it to my history *shrug*

How long is Cthulhu or BOD7?

BoD7 is 6hrs on average. I think Cthulhu is longer but not by much, I think I'm near the end and I'm at 7.2 hrs.
[EDIT]Fixed the time for Cthulhu, my community page needed a refresh.

Heads up on anyone buying civ...i recommend changing the difficulty off the default of beginner... Its so easy. Too easy. I guess its good if you......are really new to these types of games... But even then...I barely played previous civ games and this is wicked easy.

The enemies dont attack me, and im just slowly painfully taking over the entire world. Almost done and its almost the 80s!

Just a little update on Just Cause 2, it has made me burst out laughing multiple times now. Most pure fun I've had with a game in quite a while.

Hey guys, I bought a Magicka complete pack during the sale, and only have the Vanilla version in my games list. Do I fill a ticket ? (isn't it too late ?) Also, I got the same thing with Far Cry 2 during the winter sale but did not bother to fill a ticket, should I fill two or can I use the same one to say it ?

Right click Magicka, View DLC, should show up there. Or are you saying you are missing the DLC?

Ok, my bad, I didn't know about that. Thanks for your help, it's ok for both games ! I was wondering, because with some games you get additional entries in your games list. And yes, I had not launched Magicka before posting, my bad again.

Fake edit : Just started Magicka, do you have to finish the main part of it before you can play to the DLC ?

All the DLC is for multiplayer and unlocked from the beginning.

Played the Chantelise demo yesterday. Great fun. Will certainly grab it on release.

Runespell: Overture

Addictive and fun. Managed to finish the story mode, which is really short. I managed to beat the game today, and get through about 80% of the game on a second run with my cards following on (in an attempt to figure out what the Runespell XL achievement is - since no-one else has got it).

If anything, just watching myself soar through the leaderboards (now 8th) was fun enough :). It does lack something though that the original Puzzle Quest had. It might be the length or just the lack of sidequests but something was certainly missing from the game to make it a big recommendation...
