stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
I had a buddy gift me GTA:SA this morning, since it was on my wishlist. It's the first time I've received a Steam gift out of the blue. Even though it's just $3-$4, still... feels good, man. :)

I've gotten Steam gifts before but it was always me saying "Hey, can someone gift me X?"

It's made me realize how nice it is to do little things, for people.

Anyone have a link to posts (or outside resources) summing up the PC experience? IE what I need to do to make it widescreen, increase draw distance, any other graphical mods, etc.

What's the likelihood that a GTA pack will be featured in the summer sale? Don't want to bite on GTA:SA if I might buy the whole pack if it's part of the summer sale, right? :)

Aren't the Total War games really just battlefields? I always assumed they didn't have the resource gathering, building, etc. of traditional RTS.

Total War games are a bit of a weird mix of RTS games and Civilization games. Each 'turn' takes place on the game board a la Civilization, with movements of battalions and tax/money issues, research, diplomacy, etc to be considered. If your troops engage in combat, though, you zoom into the battlefield - unlike Civilization. Here you micromanage troop positions and tactics and play an RTS game to determine whether your troops win or lose the fight. Since you can get into several battles in a single turn, though, they do offer automation - the ability to look at the size of your current platoon(s) versus those of the enemy, offensive versus defensive bonuses, roll a few die, and come up with a winner.

You can play the whole game without setting foot on the battlefield, but at that point it's sort of a watered down Civilization clone. However, if you fight every single battle an average game can last tens of hours. It's best to pick and choose which battles you want to fight - clear wins or losses should be automated, but the even battles you might want to have a hand in.

If you have any interest in history at all, just about any Total War game is a treat. Just pick the one that fits the time period you're interested in.

I've been trying to get my company to direct deposit my paycheck into my Steam wallet. Unfortunately they, along with my wife, think it might not be for the best. Damn you Steam!

Yes! Steam gifts are awesome. I love surprising my friends with them all the time.

As far as SA goes, man I honestly haven't played it yet on PC even though I've owned it on Steam since forever ago, but I know there's this ridiculous Super Man mod for it that looks fun and awesome.

As far as i'm aware, the classic pack has been on sale a few times, mostly recently in April, I believe it was?

I would think it would be on sale.

I keed, but kinda not. I always put like 25 bucks in my steam wallet every other paycheck. For the last few weeks I haven't bought but maybe 2 or 3 games total so I have a nice wallet ready for the summer sale. I know. It's crazy, but man! It's like PC Pokemon. I gotta catch em all! Though it's not that bad, I just claim these games are for work research and it somehow makes me seem sane.

Not sure if serious.

It's native widescreen, well Vert or something. But modding the Steam version is a little tricky, pretty sure you have to downgrade it and crack it, but someone else might know more about it.

So I got a CAG price warning about Football Manager being under $20 on D2D. It looks like it's $19.99 on Steam now as well.. anyone have any thoughts? I've never played the game before but I love the concept..

It's an absolutely fantastic game, but if you've never played it before, be prepared for a bit of a learning curve initially. Nothing to great, and there is a sort-of tutorial that pops up context-sensitive tips if you need them initially. Once you get the hang of it though, I don't think there's many games beyond MMOs that can compare for sheer longevity, replayability and addictiveness.

I've put over 150 hours into FM09, 180 in FM10 and around 130 so far on FM11 - time will just disappear once you get the hang of the game. There are so many different ways to play, too. As you say you've not played before, I'd start as either your favourite team, or a powerful team like Barcelona. This'll let you learn the ropes while you have a good side which should ensure unless you make some drastically bad decisions, nothing will go too wrong. Then once you're familiar with the game and looking for more of a challenge, you could take control of a team in one of the lower divisions and try to lead them to the top.

That's without mentioning the custom content available from the official forums - people have created their own leagues such as a world superleague, which could provide even more play time. And then there's the editor, where you could create a team of you and your friends and see how you progress, although this takes a long time because of all the stat editing required.

In short, it's a fantastic game if you have any interest whatsoever in football/soccer. If you're willing to spend a bit of time learning the game, which it does a good job of teaching you, don't hesitate to pick it up - although saying that, it may well go on sale on Steam soon during the Summer sale.

I think I can beat you there, 15 days of play time put into FM 2009 to produce some of the finest Internazionale sides to have ever virtually existed.

Guys why is the textures and coolers really bad in SA for me? I got SA while back decided to play today and oh boy! Tried re-installing too.

Can you import save games into the Steam version of GTA SA? I've owned it for ages and been wanting to play it for a while, but I want a 100% save if I do.

I forgot to mention I played the 1st on NDS (and previously on the PC). Maybe I should pick up BS2 instead?

i've played the first and the second BS games. the second one a bit easier than the first, but I enjoyed it the same as the first.

Maybe I'll hold out a bit longer. If it's $20 on both, perhaps that was an official price drop? Thanks for the thoughts though, I love sports games' manager modes typically so the concept is definitely right up my alley.

Meaning it cuts off top and bottom to make widescreen rather than adding to the left and right like it is supposed to.

I see what you did there. And I do not appreciate it :(

With 260 hrs played on FM11 alone I agree with this sentiment. If you like football it's well worth getting and learning Football Manager.

I'm up to 265 hours on FM11 - and I thought I was bad :)

I really hope Mass Effect 2 is on sale soon. I'll settle for a physical copy from Amazon at 45% current Steam price if nothing's up, though.

So, chances of the summer sale starting on Monday? I figured it would be Thursday, since they start a lot of stuff that day and the Killing Floor summer event starts then.

Our best bet at a Summer Sale, is probably July 1st or July 4th. One of those two, if it doesn't happen by July 4th, there will not be a Summer Sale this year...unfortunately.

I already own EU3 complete and HttT. Is there any point getting Divine Wind? Particularly considering the Chronicles bundle is 25% cheaper than the expansion alone...

I bought Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition and Bulletstorm off Gamersgate recently and i just tried to register them on Steam and it wouldn't let me. Is the product code the same as the activation key?

Star Wars Complete Pack "Summer 2011" got added to the registry last night, so it's close. No other packs yet though, so it seems that either a lot will be added Sunday and Monday, or we'll have to wait a bit for the sale.

ARMA II Free just got added to the registry, looks like Valve's expanding the F2P section.

I don't think either of those are steamworks games.

If it isn't a Steamworks title or listed here, you won't be able to activate it on Steam.

Wound up getting Divinity II Saga since it's on sale. Tickled pink with the game so far. Only about four hours in and I really like the pace of the combat, and there's a decent amount of exploration / side quests to keep me busy when I want to go off the beaten path. Playing it is making me more eager for Skyrim though. XD
