But they are sold on Steam. Whats the difference?

Steam is a platform. Steamworks is the set of tools that developers can include if they want to, same idea as Games for Windows Live. Developers don't have to support Steamworks to be sold on Steam, but if they do, you can activate a retail copy of the game on Steam. With those two, you can't. Go to add non-Steam game and point it to the .exe files, it'll add shortcuts.

So I played Just Cause 2 for about an hour and a half (after New Vegas crashed) and man, this game is awesome. It really reminds me of Mercenaries, but more insane. This world is HUGE, when I fell off a mountain I expected it to go to some death cutscene, but nope, I could actually land on the bottom of that thing. This is certainly worth five dollars.

Our best bet at a Summer Sale, is probably July 1st or July 4th. One of those two, if it doesn't happen by July 4th, there will not be a Summer Sale this year...unfortunately.

There's too many Steam supported devs planning a "Summer Event" for there to be nothing on Steam about it.

To clarify. Just because a game is on steam does not mean it is Steamworks. If a game is on steam but not steamworks, you cannot link a store bought (or D2D/Gamersgate etc) to your steam account.

Steamworks is a certain set of features, kinda like GFWL or what Origin will do for its games in the future. In a perfect world every game on steam would be steamworks but we have to settle for a few. Every year the number grows a bit though.

Bookmark this page. It'll tell you every currently released steamworks game and it updates rather quickly when a new steamworks game releases.

For me the biggest advantage is the ability to purchase them on retail where the prices drop quicker. Achievements are nice too but I don't like Valve's system for that.

Fired it up at last after seeing this post and I feel like I've underpaid. I know it's received some praise here but I'm impressed by the game. Not only is it beautiful but it controls like a dream.

It wasn't the grappling everywhere that sold me though nor the parachute nor the combination of both. As I was car surfing in the second or third opening mission, I asked myself if I could easily dispatch the pursuing vehicles with the dual-grapple. Watching the line go taut, the vehicles whip back, and the faint explosion when they finally landed beneath the bridge was pure fun.

It's CPU dependent, if you have a good processor, i5 or i7 you should have absolutely no issues locking it at 60 fps.

I have an i5 750, and it had low framerates on top of a stupid speed up bug that made it look like a yackety sax remix. And it looked like ass on top of that. Saints Row 2 is one of the few times I would recommend a console version over the PC port.

Gah, that reminds me, I need the dudes at Steam to delete Saints Row 2 from my account. I accidentally bought the heavily censord version from GamersGate which pretty much ruins the game.

Even while driving around?

on single player it was pretty stable for me. I don't know if it was a constant 60 but I would say it didn't go under 50 because I would have noticed the stutter. Turning the shadows down or off completely really helps make it even more stable and at least to me doesn't look a ton different.

i7 here by the way.

hmm, i play at 2560x1600 which just makes everything more demanding, dont mind turning down shadows if it lets me get smooth 60, i dont even notice shadows much when playing

I played the game at 2650x1440 on a GTX470/i7 and after turning a few settings down it ran perfectly smooth.

2600k 4.5gz, 8gb ram, 2x 580s
when im playing at 1080p it rips through everything, but 2560x1600 seems to put more load on than it should.

I'm assuming you've got the 1.5GB 580s and not the 3GB version? I bet that's one reason why.

I personally hate 16:9. I also hate black bars but if I have a 16:10 monitor that's not my fault that's the developer's fault.

yeah before i bought them i was pondering on whether the extra vram would be worth it (silly pricing here for 3gb against 1.5), general consensus was that you only needed 1.5gb+ for multi monitor.

highest vram has hit was 1.3gb in bulletstorm, i think something was wrong though because game chewed up 90% gpu for most of the game

Actually I feel bad for asking now :(

I'm tempted to get Civ 5, but will try the Settlers 7 demo first. It's one of those two I'll get. When is the Steam sale usually? Prices are quite high

Civ 5 is on sale this weekend for $30 on Direct2Drive.

I've got a 580 as well and want to do a Surround Setup. Was (and still might) get another 580 for surround, but since mine is a 1.5GB model as well I'm thinking I might as well wait until next Nvidia GPU for multi-monitor and then sell the 580 I have now.

yeah i'd wait for whatever its called is coming next, i think 1.5gb 580s would run out of juice to power future games in surround before they ran out of vram.

It's been about $2.50ish before, I can see it being that cheap real soon.

Bows are for sissies.

I like how in The Witcher 1/2 the dwarfs are pretty docile, at least in comparison to the elves.

What do you mean? I created a shortcut and went to properties. It's not there.

I meant the executable itself in the game's folder in the steamapps directory. Should be able to change compatability settings in properties there.

I think he means the game's actual executable in its proper folder. Shortcuts are weird now, they're URLs for some reason.

Can I say that Steam and PC gaming is so addictive. Between this and trying Onlive my
console time is starting fade away. I just played Team Fortress 2 for the first time too.
So fun.

So fun.

Wait until the summer sale. Then you will realize that the most addicting part of Steam isn't playing the games you buy, its waiting for the next sale so you can add another game to your list you will never play.
