I don't know, do you have to have listened to Britney Spears or N-Sync to have "music cred"? Gameography is, thankfully, so large that you can miss swaths of genres completely, let alone a few mainstream darlings, and still continue to have novel and worthwhile experiences. And what "wisdom" is there really to be gleaned from playing those must-play games? Besides that some are too clunky to enjoy today :p. I am with you Accent, and say to hell with those sacred cows! Just play what you're interested in, time's fleeting.

The thing is, those 3 games are still far superior experiences to most games you can play today.

I don't think any musical people have Britney Spears or N-Sync on their musical bucket list.
But I definitely would say listening to something like "4'33" is something that should be on everyones musical bucket list.

As far as "wisdom" that there is to be gained, there actually is wisdom to be gained by playing these old games.
Doom has amazing level design, diverse weapons and is just all around fantastic, in my opinion it's yet to be dethroned by any other game as the best "old-school fast paced shooter" the only game that comes close is Doom 2.

The thing is, those 3 games are still far superior experiences to most games you can play today.

Brilliant point, I agree entirely.

They already said multiple times it will be 60fps and not 24fps like on consoles.

I should hope a PC could run a game that seems to have been developed using assets from the N64-PS2 eras.

I'm not expecting much (ie. Dark Souls 1 but with actual internal resolution rendering options) but at least Bamco isn't waiting till the (absolute) last minute to show off the PC version.

It's still pretty late in the game. They already did a last minute showing of the console version. :|

Just came to bitch about Flappy Goat. Nice fucking job. I can't even get to 2.

It's the bane of my goating existence.

Speaking of... nabs, why did a controller help? I couldn't even get 2 using my DS3 -- I had to use the key on my keyboard to get 3.

Goddamn, the last Steam beta is just completely unusable for me at the moment. VRSERVER.EXE constantly tries to activate itself for whatever reason, and then crashes.
Causing an infinite loop of crashes and making Steam slow as molasses. Had to opt out for the time being.

Feels so naked to not be in the latest Steam beta... :(

Perfect Game #22, Ultionus: A Tale of Petty Revenge.

Awesome game, awesome throwback, awesome plot, awesome music, super extra awesome ending theme.

So far I've played 3 hours of Age of Wonders 3 and I'm really enjoying it. Having never played a previous AoW the closest points of comparison I have are Civ V, Fallen Enchantress (which I did not enjoy but probably need to give another chance) and the demo of Might & Magic VI: Heroes (which I enjoyed but didn't buy because of uPlay and I think it has some sort of terrible drm).

AoW3 is lot like Might & Magic VI and Fallen Enchantress--a turn-based strategy game that is split between empire building and combat--but it has a delicious hex grid like Civ V. The game alternates between the empire management on the overworld map and a strategic combat mode when you engage neutrals over resource tiles or enemy units for cities and defensive structures.

This is your empire in the overworld map:
3025973EBBD6564C2D8E5904E20D7EEB4AE706D5

This is what the map looks like when fully zoomed out, I just think it looks cool:
DB89C44BD8553182B92CF4A3F4A30003E333A6C9

This is where you choose to produce units, buildings or have your city focus on manufacturing a resource for one turn:
5C7A6D04EB893B71B8B5009D34213AEE8C776111

This is the research tab where you invest knowledge and a few turns to unlock abilities for your hero, units and empire.
8DDD954B07BD04A4F092654AAE446C1AB02371B1

And here's what a battle looks like:
68563EC4C2BAF536CB3B285F26A7866C72E16F48

I'm playing through the tutorial campign as the elven council so it's probably a stoopid babey mode. I'm continually on the offencive and generally have an overwhelming force and kind of have to go out of my way to lose, which I did once or twice. They're really just trying to show you the different kinds of units, introducing you to empire management and so on with this campaign. The game is really accessible, I've found it to be easy to get into and anytime you have a question about what a unit is, what spells are being cast, there's the Tome of Wonders to answer all of your questions.

Game is looking to be pretty ace so far.

Edit:
If the pics are too huge I can just make them links.

Yea this entire last beta has been very shitty/buggy. I stepped out when the all f2p games in your library bug came. They fixed that but I keep reading in the comments that things are very buggy. So I'm sitting this one out, been in all betas so far but this one seems messed up.

Yeah, Steam Beta has been disappointing as hell for me since March 14. Why? Because on March 13, I got Metal Gear Rising to work through In-Home Streaming at 720p/60fps with full audio, and since then the performance has degraded and the audio is gone.

Back then, maybe, but now I'd rather play Hearthstone (or atleast a 100 other games from my backlog) :p

But what if I don't have any appreciation for 3D shooter level design, maybe I grok strategy game map design more? Or 2D side-scrolling level design? Or 3D platforming level design? There's probably some overlap between those things, but not enough to *necessitate* investigating all of them. Each's a deep inquiry on its own. Just like maybe someone just knows Jazz, or something. It's hard to say with certainty which's a better place to be; a specialist (of just one, or many things), or a casual (goddamn casuals), other than perhaps judging by your own subjective experience ofcourse. Maybe you're having more fun, maybe *I'm* having more fun :p

I've always been surprised by how few people know about them, so as an aside, it is worth posting now and again.

If you are not using a DS3 with "real triggers" you are doing it wrong. I believe the controller is fundamentally broken without them.

I should really grab some of those

Even today, games like Doom are better than the majority of stuff released(Although to be fair, 99% of all games released are complete junk, iOS and the Google Play store confirmed that for me lol)

Even if you don't care about 3D shooter level design, there are elements at play that make them worthwhile experiences, the aesthetics of doom tell a story all by themselves, the way the animations are done, the way the graphics are rendered each all do something wonderful that I believe people should play, if they are into games anyway, especially since Doom has had such a massive impact on the world(Bill Gates, The richest man on earth put himself in a video game to help sell the biggest product of the biggest tech company in history)

But like you say, if you don't really care about history or anything and are just a casual then you can be forgiven for not wanting to play Doom(Well, I'd forgive you for not wanting to play it, but others probably won't, haha)

I will vouch for this man. I refuse to use a DS3 without them.

I think the sound design needs a special mention too. I can't remember many games getting me as pumped up as Doom did just from the sound/music alone.

Agreed. Bought real triggers on a whim and I can't use my DS3 without them now.

Glad to see Namco is being rewarded for their work. They really should have had a Steam pop up planned that gave some more information.

When Sony updated the controllers to A1, they should have added move-like triggers.

I can't wait to see what kind of numbers Goat Simulator pulls. I have friends who are listed around #160,000 on leaderboards.

Why do you hurt us so?

No, Turfster... I'm helping you. See, Hearthstone's a *must* play. Indubitably. (Seriously, it's like, why are you still reading this and not playing Hearthstone :p)

I'd change the "should" to "consider" (fine, "strongly consider"), and I would agree. I obviously don't dismiss them having merit, I'm just acknowledging subjectivity and all that, and also there being a wealth and variety of games now that you can afford (in your fun balance ledger, idk, I ain't no fun accountant, dammit) to miss out on some ;).

Yeah, $7.50 is over the usual impulse purchase price too so hopefully they just quickly recoup whatever the cost it was to fix the game.

You can miss out on other games, sure.
But I stand firm that if you're super into games, you should play games that have had a massive impact on the entire gaming industry like Doom, Super Mario Bros and Pong.

bish gets all the credit :)
Lords of Shadow 2...what a disappointment. Why they changed up the formula (no more fixed camera, terrible stealth sections, modern day setting) from the first so much, I'll never know. It was playable, but quite a slog.
