Really wondering how this would work with something super complex like Elite Dangerous.

I'm trying to figure out a good configuration for it at the moment. I'm thinking I could start with Crab's 360 layout and modify it from there. Gotta factor in the gyro+accelerometer and mode shifting.

I'll try to record a video of it in action and upload the template on Steam, once I'm satisfied with it.

Doesn't seem very good for fighting games.

Honestly those face buttons look really awkward to use.

I would be tempted to move over to the touchpads only - set them up so they actually require a click rather than just touch alone, and also force the deadzone to be small enough for rocking movements to be enough to register a directional change but not so small that every single movement registers. At least that is something I would try and that I haven't seen anyone else try yet

These new Woodsie videos have been great. I don't absolutely need a Steam controller, but it just seems so cool to mess with.

Ran into a weird bug last night when I was trying to create a modifier that enables the gyro for my Elite Dangerous binds. Controller froze up and wouldn't stop vibrating--I couldn't get it to stop, even after quitting out of the game; had to kill Steam completely and re-pair the controller in BPM to fix it.

Lost the binds I had set up in Elite as well... Bit upset about that. :(

Can somebody who has used the controller tell me what the haptic feedback feels like? I hear things like "It feels like a mouse ball rolling" or "it feels like an analog stick" but how does that actually feel on a flat surface? Does it just kind of vibrate in certain spots? I don't really know what to make of the impressions

Do the ABXY buttons feel closer to the XBOX360/XBONE buttons or closer to the DS4's? Just wondering because I prefer the DS4 feel for face buttons but I imagine this'll be closer to XBOX :p

So have controllers shipped? I ordered mine the day of announcement but skipped out on the dev version. Is this the consumer rollouts or dev rollout?

Just devs rollout.

Ah ok. Yeah I figured, but I also considered maybe there was a chance of an early release.

Yeah I was on the edge of ordering the dev version, but I thought that the chances of faulty parts would be higher and that I could wait a little longer.

Seeing all the people messing with controls now, though, makes me wish I had ordered the dev one instead.

It feels like scrolling with your mouse wheel, like how you can feel and hear your mouse wheel "click" as you scroll. Except instead of being a wheel and going in one direction, it feels like a sphere going in every direction

It doesn't really feel like either. They are smaller and rounder than either the xbox or ps4 buttons. They axtually feel closest to the old duke xbox controller's buttons.

How do they feel in terms of pressing? More like XBOX or more like PS? Sorry, I meant to ask that rather than the shape.

I guess more like the Xbox One, but I really don't feel much of a difference between the Xbox One buttons and the Dualshock 4 buttons.

The touchpads, however, feel like the Xbox One's d-pad when you press them, definitely not like the dualshock's d-pad.

Btw in the Rocket League vid Trial goes through the analog emulation options on the left pad.

Yup! Happy to see those settings. Lots of sliders to play around with. Also love the idea of modeshifting between joystick and mouse.

FPS game on the controller (Borderlands): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7-aZbUJZck

says you can bypass the analog pull by rapidly pulling the trigger, so you can bind ADS and fire on one trigger and don't need to separately bind fire again to the other trigger, if you want to fire from the hip

That's awesome! This actually makes the feature viable and not just a cool thing that people would never use.

Interesting. About the touchpad's use as a dpad, I noticed that he was clicking at the edge of the touchpad for each move. Do you have to click that far out or can you click closer to the center and still have the controller register the proper direction?

A little late to the steam controller news and impressions but I'm really starting to like it the more I see it.
You can use this controller without a SteamBox right?
Wouldn't mind trying it out on my "regular" PC.

you can change the size of the deadzone.

Great, thanks.

One thing I did for Axiom Verge is that I made the right pad act like the right analog stick of a conventional gamepad. In axiom verge, the right stick on a 360 pad selects your weapon.

I made clicking the right stick send the A button which is the jump button, then made one of the grips the fire button. Then I set the dead zone for the right touchpad to maximum, so that only the very edges of the right touchpad registered as moving the right analog stick.

What it basically turned the right pad into was a giant jump button, but with a thin outer ring at the edge of the pad that let me select my weapon. The touchpad is so big that my thumb can move around in the middle of the pad without hitting the edge. It feels very much unlike any other control setup I've ever used.

This all sounds so intriguing. I fully expect to spend the first few days experimenting with the various crazy options instead of actually playing games. It seems like you can do some crazy stuff if you can think outside of the box.

This has been said before but I'm very interested in seeing how 3rd person action games (gta, batman, mgs etc) work with this thing. Also are the face buttons hard to hit? Some of the videos make it look that you kinda have to reach your thumb to push them. Would you think that this controller is usable if your hands are somewhat small?

There's a pic on the OP, which shows a small-handed person having problems reaching the X. But you could probably map things in a way in most games that you don't have to reach for the face buttons.

Wow, I must be blind. Thanks :) That's one of the reasons I'd very much like to try the controller before buying one.

Interesting combination!

I'm struggling to keep up with this thread. Thanks for this link.

* Have we seen Real-Time Strategy game vids yet?
Would love to see Age of Empires 2, Crusader Kings 2, etc.

* How 'bout Turn-Based Strategy game vids?
Would love an extended vid of Civilization 5 - a game Valve briefly demoed so long ago.

* Any Management Simulation vids yet?
Would be curious what RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 plays like.

* Any Turn-Based Role Playing game vids?
Such as Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic.

My interest in the controller has to do with taking Keyboard-&-Mouse-only games and seeing how passable they are for extended play sessions in the living room.
Thanks.

I second the CK2/Paradox request, if at all possible. I know they've shown off Civ V with the original trailer reveal, but CK2 is a lot more complex with a lot of little buttons and smaller features that would make it more demanding for the pad.
