Steam Frame, Steam controller and Steam Machine Revealed

Sufficient for what, tho. Older and/or indie games will probably be OK but what about the modern ones.

In DF's video, they say that turning on RT brings the game down to the 30's of FPS.

32GB system RAM and 16GB VRAM would have been much more appropriate.
🤷‍♂️ I'm not an engineer and I don't have access to a Steam Box. That's what Digital Foundry said Valve said and I was just passing it along.

Gaming technology has completely stagnated due to costs. PS5/Xbox Series and now Steam Machine will be more than able to run any AAA game for the next 8-10 years
That's all fine and good, but when DF said it's somewhere between a Series S and a base PS5 in terms of power, I still expected better.

I'm interested in the VR headset specs. I have a Quest 2 that I play rarely. Would like wider FOV, better color & resolution without spending >$300

where are my chad master race gamers
Whatever happened to beauty, femininity, or at least common-sense marketing. I mean who is this kind of nonsense for at a baseline marketing level.

How braindead would Sony be if they continue offering all their games to Valve in the future? Valve has shown their cards that they are interested in taking market share from Sony, porting their games to Steam in the future would be like porting them to the Nintendo eshop.

The Steam Machine being a weak PC device, it will not last for more than 3 years. PS5 and Xbox Series will not last that much, either, people will be disappointed if they seriously believe that.

Are there prices yet? I really want the new headset.

Steam Frame display is a fucking joke for rumored $1200 price.

2160x2160 L fucking C fucking D

I bought PICO4 3 years ago with same resolution for $399. The only difference here is that it runs steamOS and MAAAAYBE it will run some pc games becauause sure as shit it won't run them all with new Frame aproved program.

The "who is this for" and "why not just put your own PC in the living room" crowd are strangely silent 🙄
I mean, I definitely had the same thoughts with this. Sure, it may do alright within the pre-built market, but I don't see how the Steam Machine could be appealing for the hardcore Steam fanbase.
And a mass market ""console"" this will never be.

If only you could buy and use a small factor miniITX based PC since around 2005 or so and connect it to a TV and a gamepad and play games on it just like you're supposed to do on this thing...
Nah, that's impossible, Valve is innovating!

It's called "build your own PC or buy a prebuilt and load SteamOS on it"

The more I think about it, the more the specs make sense. This is essentially a gaming-focused mini PC that you can use either as an entry-level desktop computer or as an HTPC. If you have it on a 4K display, SteamOS provides plenty of down sampling and resolution options to make performance work.

This is essentially for people who would want to exclusively dock their Steam Deck but want something with specs that can actually handle it.

Also this is arguably stronger than a Series X or PS5 given it's on a much newer CPU (Zen4) architecture and using RDNA3 cores.

Steam OS... Nah, thank you

They state on the website that you can install another OS if you want.

Jesus, that controller is massive - how are smaller hands supposed to hold it?

It doesn't. All it looks like is that they dragged the middle part lower to install the trackpads. It LOOKS bigger, but that's because there's more surface area on the controller compared to the Xbox/PS controller.

I'm getting the Steam Frame for sure. doubt I would get the Machine thou since I already have a PC. but good to know the opinion is there. as for the controller, I might get it just to try it out. I have their previous controller and it honestly doesn't do much for me. we'll see I guess.

Weak hardware and Steam OS. Nah.

Steam OS is the future tbh. Windows 11 is getting worse and worse. Microsoft want to integrate copilot and all their sloppy apps nonstop. I'm hoping I can ditch windows in a few years on my gaming PC.

The Steam frame looks impressive. My biggest issue with quest 3 to PC was the need to be wired or have a dedicated router and it was just so much faff. Would love to test the frame out with that new dongle. No interest in VR as a whole though (sold my quest once I had a month of intense testing/using. VR is still shit imo).

Also very interested to try the steam controller.

Valve have been killing it on the hardware front with the steam deck. Initial dip with steam controller and steam machines many moons ago was rough but they have learned and improved a lot.

So specs wise this isn't even an XSX or PS5? Because honestly,.....disappointing.
It's a bit slower. If PS5 is around RTX2080S then this GPU will likely be closer to RTX2070. Also less VRAM and only a 6C CPU - but the CPU should be faster in 1T so it could be on par overall.
If it's not launching at $300-400 then I don't know who will buy it.

I will NEVER get the race to be the most powerful, hence pushing prices sky high. Nintendo learnt this years ago and have been reaping rewards ever since. The VAST majority of gamers don't need 4k 120fps or whatever. Most just want to play games that are affordable on affordable devices. Assuming this is cheap, this could be huge.

This is exciting to me and I love Steam so I am all in. Lets just hope Australia gets it on day 1 unlike the phenomenal Steam Deck...

That hardware is pretty weak. Weaker than both the PS5 and XSX for sure. Likely means a very low entry price. $400-$450?

It's valve. IT will be $899 if you are lucky. They are trying to sell Steam Frame for rumored $1200 with specs from 3 years ago when you can buy Samsung Galaxy XR with 4k per eye OLEDs for $1600 or big screen beyond 2 for $1000 with 2,5k per eye.

This uses SteamOS, not windows
Oh that's correct. I somehow forgot that.
But still, for its PC environment without bespoke development optimization, on top of being pretty weak in general, no chance that this goes beyond a couple of years for new AAA titles.
