That's XBOX taking another slap then lol
HDMI 2.0 ONLY WTF
This mean you can't do 4k 120 HDR , only 4k 60 HDR and on top of that it's going to be 8bit instead of 10bit so colors will look like crap , this machine is a downgrade not an upgrade
"For those of you with high end displays we have a connection for you. It's called display port 1.4"
Which you can use with an hdmi 2.1 adapter.
There is absolutely zero reason for this not to have HDMI 2.1 specially that it's aimed for the living room and most of the tvs have HDMI 2.1 , now I understand it can still hit 4k 120 and do vrr but it's a downgrade when it comes to HDR , even PS5 and series x a 5 years old hardware have HDMI 2.1I don't think the Steam Machine is meant for power gamers who have the best hardware available and game at 4K120fps regularly. It's aimed more for someone like me, a PC gamer who has a five year old PC rocking a 3060Ti who games at 1080/1440 and 60fps. Its for someone who wants to plug it into their TV and play modest Steam games to relax with very little fuss, not play Cyberpunk or the very newest high end games in 4K120.
, even PS5 and series x a 5 years old hardware have HDMI 2.1
The reason would be tied to power consumption (minor concern here...but still valid given thermal management in a small chassis), licensing costs, and internal player specs collected by valve (knowing what hardware players are using and what settings they are using while playing). There is absolutely zero reason for this not to have HDMI 2.1 specially that it's aimed for the living room and most of the tvs have HDMI 2.1 , now I understand it can still hit 4k 120 and do vrr but it's a downgrade when it comes to HDR , even PS5 and series x a 5 years old hardware have HDMI 2.1
Pretty self-explanatory. Linux is not the OS you use for multiplayer gaming. If you want a PC console box for multiplayer get the next Xbox.
No way this is on par with base PS5
They are lucky though, because MS made the weak Series S and games still have to run on it for some time

It has a more powerful CPU and a slightly less powerful GPU than the PS5. It closer to the PS5 than the XSS.
Yeah it's closer for sure, but not on par and you have keep in mind that PS5 has dedicated software, this runs generic PC software
This is absolutely correct and would be a large competitor to both MS (not getting their Windows license fee) and Sony (would be a true console competitor and could be marketed as such).Getting a little too ahead here. What Microsoft really does not want to happen is mainstream OEMs selling PCs with SteamOS pre-installed at a lower price than their Windows counterparts. The average person doesn't want any part of DIY installing an OS and will just stick with whatever is pre-installed.
Yeah, it's a shame if that's the experience you're looking for. It's the biggest downside of SteamOS/Linux.Hmm, that's a bit shit isn't it.
Sony is busy seeing Nintendo (Which doesn't threaten them at all) as a rival while they port everything to Steam to please Gabe Newell, without getting any of Valve's games like the upcoming Half Life 3 in return.Yup, and they're releasing their games on the rival's machine… lmao. Way to go, Sony.
DF dropped the Frame review now.

Sure, its just a rough comparison, not 1:1. This thing is DOA if its over $499.99.
And we might have the PS6 portable to keep low power gaming relevant through the next generation. No way this is on par with base PS5

It's because of an issue AMD has with Linux, they have been unable to obtain HDMI 2.1 certification when running Linux because of some open source shit that can't comply with some closed source shit in HDMI 2.1 spec or I don't remember but it's all highly autisticYou can and it's spec equivalent to 2.1, it appears to be a certification issue.
DF discussed this in a section of their coverage but it has 4k 120 HDR, vrr, etc. The only thing it won't do at launch is 4k 165hz, but apparently they are working on it.
AMD GPUs won't output HDMI 2.1 in Linux. HDMI Forum denied them the license due to their open source nature. What's the issue with AMD cards? This is the first time I've heard anything but I haven't had an AMD card in awhile (RX580).

When have Valve ever acted like that though? They'll try to Valve Tax like they're Apple. And we will find out which YouTube channels aren't groupies for appropriately tearing them apart.
DF dropped the Frame peview now.
Also Series S, that is much weaker than this machine, LOL
And DisplayPort is absolutely useless if you want to connect a device to a TV, as no TV has DP inputs
512GB version might be 499.
At that price it'll do well. Not anything crazy like Switch numbers, but good enough for it to be a success.
I agree that anything over that and not many people will be interested.
I'll bust a nut if it's below 499.
When have Valve ever acted like that though?
This fucker couldn't pull out of a parking lotThey'd be smart to price this aggressively to probe the market for interest. As a 5-time parent, I think this will be the most popular console among the 12-21 demographic. Roblox and Steam Streamer Slop are way more popular than anything on Switch or PS5 in our neck of the woods. I think that RV game was the latest example. My kids would much rather have access to that and Minecraft mods than Ghost of Yotei. We're actually building PC's over Christmas break!
Small hand gang is telling on themselves in this thread. I thought it looked odd too, but when I pictured it without the touchpads it made sense and my thumbs actually breathed a slight sigh of relief. I was super close to buying some $80 Chinese controller just a couple weeks ago too. Def going to wait and see what this one is about before I make the leap!
Condoms are like wearing a raincoat in the shower. Sure, you can see the water coming down, but are you really showering? This fucker couldn't pull out of a parking lot
So essentially you have no reason to believe they will do that.We will circle back to this discussion when they announce the price. Being weaker than a PS5 Digital which can be bought for $500, what do you consider an appropriate price for this?
We could look at that monthly fee over the life of the console. Or backward compatibility assurances when building that digital library. Breadth of the digital library is a good one too. High school kid gets digital PS5 and games probably aren't going to be flowing from the heavens like mana. But $50 on a Steam sale could go a long way. Plus, they're getting a whole ass PC. I don't think the value prop is even close. We will circle back to this discussion when they announce the price. Was a godsend when I used to have a living room pc setupThe previous stream controller is so good.

$500 seems like a fair price. I don't get the Apple comparison either man. If Valve acted like Apple then Steam Deck would have started at $1000
They mention the trade-offs here that likely led to using LCD instead of OLED... specifically, it seems like a very low latency / low persistence screen to avoid any blurring or motion affects + pancake lenses + emphasis on FOV is one set of priorities that lead you to use LCD, which clearly override for Valve the downside of not having true blacks or quite as intense of contrast.
Makes sense to me, and overall this device seems to vindicate Oculus/Meta in a big way. Nearly every major VR decision from the Quest line is echoed here by Valve, from inside-out tracking, to wireless only, to pancake lenses, even almost the exact controller form factor from Q3.
This seems like a logical upgrade from my 3080, and allow me to play pc games on my couch.I don't think the Steam Machine is meant for power gamers who have the best hardware available and game at 4K120fps regularly. Valve is much more consumer friendly than any of the others including Sony. Their old hardware was cheap, and the Steam Deck released at a killer price and hasn't seen a single price increase despite nearly everything else gaming getting price increases. Not only have they kept the price the same for the OG Deck when they announced the OLED but they made it a better value by making the 256GB model the new baseline versus 64GB.What i believe is Valve will be unwilling to take much of a loss on this unlike Sony which is why no price was announced.
They got informational tiktoks man. If the flavor of the month game can only be played on Windows, there will be plenty of ways for them to get a technique. I think once some copies of the Ally X OS start floating around, that's where these things are gonna go into overdrive. With most Sony games coming to Steam anyway, it could become tricky for Sony to message the value of a PS5 over the Steambox and the impending flood OEM branded competitors. They are getting a PC that uses Linux. How many of them do you think are familiar with that or even care to learn when they have been using windows or apple in their short lifetime.
How is LCD low latency and low persistence? Isn't it slower than OLED for ghosting and response times? They mention the trade-offs here that likely led to using LCD instead of OLED... specifically, it seems like a very low latency / low persistence screen to avoid any blurring or motion affects + pancake lenses + emphasis on FOV is one set of priorities that lead you to use LCD,
