At least in my area, the company did everything they could to systematically wipe out all renting competition in the area. Then, when the competition was gone, they raised prices like crazy. When Blockbuster first came into my neighborhood as a kid, it cost like $3 to rent a game for a week. That was actually higher than the competition, but BB had a huge selection so the higher cost was justified. By the time they ran everyone out of business, they started charging like $7 for 3 days. And if you rented early one day, it was due early on the last day. Turning it in in the evening would result in late fees. It was ridiculous. And there was no other renting option.
So when Blockbuster started having major issues, no one had any sympathy for them.
