Study: Soda consumption fuels rise in Diabetes, Heart Disease.

FRIDAY, March 5 (HealthDay News) --Increasing consumption of sugary soft drinks contributed to 130,000 new cases of diabetes, 14,000 new cases of heart disease and 50,000 more life-years burdened with heart disease in the last decade, a new U.S. study finds.

"The finding suggests that any kind of policy that reduces consumption might have a dramatic health benefit," said senior study author Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, an associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, who was to present the finding Friday during the American Heart Association's Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention annual conference, in San Francisco.

The study used a computer simulation of heart disease that has been applied to other cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity and dietary salt, Bibbins-Domingo explained. "We probably underestimated the incidence, because the rise is greatest among the young, and our model focuses on adults 35 and older," she said.

One plausible explanation is that the increased incidence of cardiovascular problems is due to a rising incidence of diabetes, Bibbins-Domingo said, while an increase in obesity might also be responsible.

"Whatever the mechanism, large population studies do suggest an effect of drinking large lots of sweetened beverages," she said. "No one argues that these drinks are not fine in moderation, but over the past decade their consumption has been on the rise, while consumption of other beverages has declined."

A statement by Maureen Storey, senior vice president for science policy for the American Beverage Association, noted that the study had not yet been published in a scientific journal, and therefore had not undergone review by outside, qualified scientists.

"What we do know is that both heart disease and diabetes are complex conditions with no single cause and no single solution," Storey said in the statement, which noted that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is not listed as a risk factor by the American Heart Association. "Rather, we need to continue to educate Americans about the importance of balancing the calories from the foods and beverages we eat and drink with regular physical activity."

But the study does suggest that any kind of policy that reduces consumption might have a health benefit, Bibbins-Domingo noted. One such policy is a proposed tax on sugar-sweetened drinks, she noted. "The reason why there is a current debate about a tax is that scientific evidence in populations has consistently shown that more than one drink a day increases your risk," she said.

The American Heart Association recommends limiting consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks such as soda pop, while "alternative choices are available," said Dr. Robert H. Eckel, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and a past president of the association.

"Juice from fruit itself is nutrient-rich, and its nutritional value goes beyond the carbohydrate content," Eckel said.

The recommended daily sugar intake amounts to just one can of sugar-sweetened soda a day for a man and slightly less for women, he said.

It looks like the AHA is finally waking up and looking at the harmful effects of sweeteners on health, instead of crying about saturated fat ad nauseam.

Edit: Sorry. Can a mod/admin move this the OT?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Wrong section.

Does diet soda count?

Yeah well if you even cared about your health you wouldn't drink soda anyway, just like I never do.

There is like no nutritional value to soda whatsoever.

Unfortunately, many Americans are stupid and take their "immortal" youth for granted, and when they get older they're going to writhe with the health problems they get from their years of bad dieting.

And yeah saturated fats are not nearly as bad as proclaimed to be.

EDIT: Wait, gaming section. lol!

That stuff is poison in a can.

I've only drank three cups of soda in the last two years or so.

Still have a nice drink from my flask every other week or so.

Yes, but I am positive that they'll find some way to bring butter into the equation and blame it on our misbegotten love for cattle-derived foods and their horrifying lack of kinky double bonded carbons. OH TEH NOEZ, THE HYDROGEN WILL KILL YOUUUU

Except for me. Everyone would be better off if they never drank soda, in moderation or otherwise. Not that anyone with a professorship would ever blaspheme the holy nutritional god of moderation, tho.
The agenda against fats in the US is a damned joke. People drink juice or milk in the morning along with a cereal, then a sandwich in the afternoon with a soda or two and they top it off with some dessert in the late afternoon only to blame a well cooked steak for their rotund figures.

smh

Butter actually has a lot of health benefits--more than most people might think.

Wow. Cannot really believe such negativity toward soda in here. There's nothing wrong with an ice cold Coca Cola! I like all sorts of drinks. Orange juice, milk, tea, water, and god forbid the devilish soda as well. Variety is the spice of life!

I used to think that.

And then I watched this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

Went from 2-3 sodas a day to 2 a week.

It talks about how for the past 30 years the government has tried to push people away from fat, but sugar is the real evil. Anyone who has done the atkins diet, or knows someone that has can attest to the real world results.

You would think that people would know stuff like this by now. But no, people continue to avoid saturated fat while gulping down soda and juice and stuffing their face with grain products.

if all we ate was

-veggies
- water
- fruit
- fruit and vegetable juice
- nuts
- occasional meat

we'd be healthy.

But damn it... Carl's Jr. just released this

We just went over this subject in Biology today, actually.
In fact, there are many fats that the body NEEDS to function properly (of course that doesn't mean a greasy cheeseburger everyday, but fats from fish and fatty acids, etc.)

I hate the taste of every single vegetable I have ever tried; they taste like garbage to me.

So I try to mix them in smoothies ^_^ especially carrots.

It's just a front. Every time someone posts a study of some sort half of Gaf is compelled to act as if they've always believed that the subject of that study is the bane of the modern world. They just want to appear scientifically literate. Everyone knows that excessive sugar is unhealthy, yet these fuckers are acting as if they're among the few in the know. AFTER the board went crazy about Pepsi and Mountain Dew throwbacks, mind you.

I drink mostly water anyway. When I do drink a soda, it's diet.

But seriously, what the fuck do we eat now adays anyway. It's like no matter what you eat, it's terrible for you in some kind of way.

The fuck...

I watched that video and quit soda altogether.

I'm serious.

I used to drink Dr. Pepper religiously. Like 50+ oz a day. Watched that video, haven't had one since.

It also spurred me to start on a full on diet. I've lost almost 20 pounds so far.

Suffice it to say, this video changed my life. No hyperbole.

I've gotten so used to drinking water that it's to the point that I don't even really like Dr Pepper or Coke unless I'm drinking it under very specific circumstances. When I get the craving though...my God, nothing will quench my thirst like a good old Dr Pepper (CAN AND/OR GLASS BOTTLE ONLY, FUCK THAT PLASTIC SHIT).

That "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" video was awesome. I was actually studying without knowing it, because it covered stuff in my Biology lecture today.

I hope more people see it to learn just how fucked up America has become in their handling of diet, nutrition and medicine.

will gently cradle you as time slowly ticks away.
I always intended to watch that sugar documentary, I guess I'll do it now.

Last year between September-December I was cutting and drank close to no soda. The first few weeks were rough as fuck (as any lowered-carb diet does) and then after a while everything clicked and I felt better. I drank over a gallon of water a day and to be honest I'll only ever have soda if I go back to Scotland at all (I cannot fucking say no to Irn-Bru.)

Also: when I was in hospital recently I found myself craving Coca-Cola. Honest to god craving it like an addict or something - and I don't really drink sodas that much. Rice, kimchi and water three times a day will do that though. Long story short though, I drank 1.8 litres (half a gallon) and due to my blood thinners and general medication the caffeine and sugar content got me high as shit.

Don't worry America! See this sign that says "Diet" or "Lite" or "Low Fat"? That means you can have as much as possible without any side affects!

Um.. news at 11??

how is this news to anybody? Of course Soda increases your risk for diabetes and heart disease.

Also.. I used to drink at least a can of Coca Cola a day. I quit about 2 years ago, and I feel SO much better. I knew it was bad for me, but I didn't care....

Shit, juice isn't healthy? When did that happen?

Man, I wonder why I'm so skinny then. When I was a kid my Mom made me drink a glass of orange juice a day. It actually got to the point where my dentist told my Mom to stop serving me juice because the acid was eating away at my teeth and making them brittle, not because I was getting fat or anything.

Because as a kid you used that sugar. The issue with juice, and smoothies, is that people think they're healthy but don't realize you're getting x number of fruits worth of sugars in a fraction of the time it takes to eat the fruit themselves.
