Suicide Squad Review Thread: As Fresh As Green Lantern!

Damn Faraci goes in on the Joker:

That villain is surely not The Joker. Jared Leto is fucking insufferable in the role, playing The Joker as Scarface with a bad sense of humor. I know that everybody gets their own interpretation of comic book characters, but I think this is the worst version of The Joker yet, a version that so deeply misunderstands the chaotic heart of the character that he’s simply ruined.

I'm holding in so much laughter at work. Holy shit.

As someone who saw F4ntastic, I can guarantee this won't be as bad as F4ntastic.

Fantastic Four is used as a punchline in two of the reviews, but yes, I genuinely cannot fathom it being worse. Fantastic Four is barely a movie.

To me the real shame of the reviews is making SS sound like a very conventional, safe, Marvel-ish (not my words) film. I had that problem with X-Men Apocalypse, too.

I still have absolutely no idea what Hot Topic is.

It can't be as bad as F4. That movie was one of the most boring things I've ever seen, and I love the Fantastic Four.

I'm not sure there'd be much point in getting Nolan back. His vision of Batman was pretty much done, and didn't he help with the story in MoS etc?

I want WW to be good but await Faraci's article in x months about WB taking a hatchet to it in the editing room.

Affleck will sort out the Joker (and Leto). Ayer just wanted to bring out the Hot Topic-ness, it seems.

He'll fix it. He'll fix it all... *mutters to self*

Just like Ayer would fix the DCEU.....bunch of false gods.

Can't wait for the next directors line-up at SDCC.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Zack Snyder! *booo* David Ayer *boooo* Patty Jenkins? *booo* euhm, Batfleck? *eh*"

Holy fuck.

plainr has me laughing so hard I'm crying.

I'm crying on the inside a little as well for this movie.

It should have been good. I'm shocked they managed to shit the bed with this.

The marketing will probably save the OW but the DCU is hurting.

Irish Times review

Irish Times likes Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), but doesn't seem too fond of Leto's Joker.

Viola Davis, one of our greatest living actors, brings unnecessary class to the role of ruthless government wonk Amanda Waller.

The most charismatic, played by Margot Robbie at full pelt, is a charming psychopath named Harley Quinn. Her special power is that she owns a baseball bat. Her humanising globule is an inexplicable affection for The Joker (Jared Leto). Objectified in contemporary comic-book fashion – while the men are all decently covered up, she is dressed like a sex worker at a truck stop – Robbie somehow manages to make the character fizzle. The Australian spits out more carnival energy than a whole tent-full of drugged-up clowns.

Leto cannot boast so much. It has been reported that the recent Oscar winner, now 44 years old, sent “sticky” porn magazines and a dead pig to fellow cast-members when preparing for the role. This middle-aged actor also stayed “in character” when not delivering his lines as the mad jester. For what? The extended cameo turns out to be everything you’d expect from a 1980s soap-star playing Captain Hook in panto at the Barnsley Empire: all extended vowels and erratic phrasings. You never caught Caesar Romero gift-wrapping a dead pig.

Anyway, for all the silly “darkness”, Suicide Squad does prove to be more fun than either of the preceding DC films.

So what I'm getting from reviews so far

Not Ayer enough (wanted R?)
Not enough Joker OR hate Joker
Edited weird

I'm getting "action packed B-movie that ulimately disappoints". Focusing on the former, as that's what I expected. Movie's going to make bank at the box office.

lol what are you talking about? Reviews are calling it a disaster, some even worse than F4ntastic.

? that one Vanity Fair review i guess that said that a few pages back? im just taking a quick glance at the main page of this fuckin thread and on there i count (and actually skimmed through them) like, 9 who gave it fairly positives (slashfilm, timeout, empire, hitfix, Wrap, USA, village voice, gamespot, guardian) and the rest are negatives, as well as plenty of other positive and negatives ones ive seen on twitter. It does seem truly more mixed from what im seeing. Haven't really looked at the Tomatoscore so i'm just speaking from what i've seen so far.

There's so much anger and disagreement here, hope you guys don't fight each other and then all of a sudden start boning.
Thatd be weird and tasteless.

When you compare Suicide Squad to what James Gunn and Marvel Studios achieved in Guardians of the Galaxy – low-profile property, oddball characters, make-it-fun brief – the film makes you cringe so hard your teeth come loose. But it’s a slog even on its own crushingly puerile terms.

And while “Suicide Squad” isn’t as poorly stitched together as its nearly unintelligible forebear “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” it’s still a patchy, makeshift effort of mismatched tones, tacked on jokes and messy narrative. While a flippant sense of humor assists its entertainment factor, the second DCU film ain’t no “Deadpool” either.

I guess Tom Dagnino was right from a few months ago :/

Chicago Tribune, 1.5 stars

Meanwhile we have this thing, this garish, overstaffed, overstuffed, blithely sadistic corporate directive disguised as a PG-13 summer movie for all ages. (You'd be pretty stupid to let anyone under 13 see it. Actually you'd be pretty stupid to let anyone over 13 see it too.) It will open big, and if its de facto prequel "Batman v Superman" could make $872 million worldwide, well, anything's possible and quality has very little to do with it.

Via Vanity Fair's review:

might as well post these unused evans gifs. I didn't get use em the first time around.

Oh let's add that Jai Courtney inflicted self damage and using drugs to get into the role of Boomerang...yeah that's not how you do for a role..it is plain stupid doing shit like that.

The Hollywood Reporter

All this talk of "edge" makes it sound like it has always looked in the trailers: Hot Topic, the Movie.

In 10 years there will be articles written on how badly WB got the DC universe wrong.
