I feel like a dumb shit for this taking so long.
Here is my review of Litigation Manuel's mix, Waffles are Delicious (especially when faced).
1. Thickfreakness - The Black Keys: Sweet, sweet blues rock. I absolutely love the guy's voice on this one, as well as the thick sounding guitar. A great way to start off the mix with a nice cool/chilled out feeling. 4/5
2. Loose - Iggy Pop and the Stooges: The volume is WAY too low on this song for some reason. So it screws up the flow almost right away after the opening track. The song itself is decent but I've never really been a fan of Iggy to begin with. Still, it's nice enough, but probably would have been better if the volume had been a little higher. 2.5/5
3. Fallen Angel - Elbow: Ehhhh...not bad. Strangely enough, the vocals kind of remind me of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd on this song. For that, it gets bonus points. It's like some new-age hippie music. If you're in the mood for this song, it's cool. If not, it gets old after about a minute and a half. The scarce guitar solo does add some diversity though. 3/5
4. Shine a Light - The Constantines: Great, great song. Hotarubi put this on a mix a long time ago for me and I liked it then, and I still like it now. The vocal delivery totally makes it for me. The chorus does start to get a little redundant by the end, but it stops just in time so it doesn't get annoying. Sweet bass on this too. 4/5
5. Slow Nerve Action - The Flaming Lips: I should pick up some more old Lips stuff. This is pretty cool. The guitar is just slutty and thick, and then the vocals come in in their usual soft fashion. A great song to cruise to and fun to sing along to. Air guitaring to the main riff would be fun too. Haha. 3.5/5
6. Another Morning Stoner - ...Trail of the Dead: I've been curious about Source Tags and Codes and I think I might pick it up. There is no denying that these guys are talented musicians. My problem with this song is that, again, it starts off great with a neat and quick guitar melody, but after about 2 minutes my attention starts to wane (sp?) and I want to head to the next track because there is nothing overly interesting going on. 3/5
7. Nightshop - Fugazi: Very subdued and indy sounding. It works well as a transitional song but I don't think it holds up well on its own. After losing interest near the end of the last track, this one didn't do a lot to peak it again. I do like the vocals and the breakdown in the middle grabbed my attention. So, it does get better as it goes along, with transition after transition, but on the whole I'm not extremely impressed. 2.5/5
8. Going Inside - John Frusciante: Wow. This doesn't suck. Actually...it's very good! What up with that? I love the guitar, love the vocals, and practically everything else about this song. Might have to download more of Shadows Collide With People. Nice. 4/5
9. The Group Who Couldn't Say - Grandaddy: I love this song. It's the perfect tune for just cruising in your car on a nice, sunny day. Most of Grandaddy's stuff is perfect for that though. The vocals are smooth, the music itself is nice and relaxed, and it's just a great, great song. 5/5
10. Zurich is Stained - Pavement: More indy. Indy that I like. It's just a smooth flowing tune and very easy on the ears. Nothing spectacular, but still good. 3/5
11. Like Dylan in the Movies - Belle and Sebastian: Dreamy pop, yay. I have a soft spot for this group and I really like the tune. The sugary sweet vocal delivery and lo-fi recording makes they appealing, but it's the melody of the chorus that sticks with me. 4/5
12. Sooner or Later (one of us must know): Stereotypical Dylan vocal delivery on this one. It's good though. It's just a nice, sweet song. I'm a fan of folky stuff and I'm a fan of this. Me needs more Dylan. 4/5
13. River, Sea, Ocean - Badly Drawn Boy: Nice acoustic tune. As the mix starts to wind down, it slowly gets quieter and more relaxed, as if exhaling. This song is perfect for that. Awesome. 4/5
14. Afterglow - Travis: Also have a soft spot for these guys and their wimpy Brit pop. They write pretty songs and when I'm in the mood for them, they're great. This is...a Travis song. If you like Travis, you'll like it. 3.5/5
15. New Slang - The Shins: How anyone can NOT like this song is beyond me. It's perfect. It's just perfect, folky pop and I can't wait to see what these guys do next. It seems that a lot of people put this tune on their mixes, but it never loses its charm. 5/5
16. Lazy Flies - Beck: Is this off Sea Change? Because if it is, I really need to pick up that album. I've loved the two tunes I've heard now. It's one of those things where I feel like an idiot for not having discovered Beck earlier on. Can't say much other than I really like this song. 4/5
17. Svefn-g-englar - Sigur Ros: Good 'ol Sigur Ros. A nice and relaxed way to finish off the mix. These guys are true music masters. This song in particular brings everything to a satisfying close. I'm a bit of a post-rock whore though, so I was bound to love this, especially since I own the album. Wicked. 5/5
On the whole, I liked this mix quite a bit. At times it felt a bit uneven, and the low volume on the second track is a blunder, but tracks by Grandaddy, John Frusciante, and The Shins constantly got my attention if it was ever fading. The second half of the cd is a lot more satisfying than the first for me, but I prefer laid back tracks over straight-up rock, so that could just be me. There is some truly great songwriting to be found amidst a couple of selections that might have been changed to better the flow of the mix. 3.5/5
Thanks to Litigation Manuel for the mix!
