here's my review of hotarubi's mix, which was titled "and now the bombs fall 'round our feet"

it had a pretty nice flow to it, except for a few spots.

1. patrick wolf - paris: a nice string intro to this song kicks off the mix, which soon gives way to throbbing distorted bass and cool vocals. definitely a cool song, and i'm going to look for more by patrick wolf now. 4/5

2. restiform bodies - sippy cup: rough electronic sort of song. starts off fairly understated, and doesn't really build too much. i like the vocals and the beat was pretty good too. 3/5

3. frou frou - let go: had this been any other frou frou song i probably would've liked it a whole lot more, but the problem here is that i work in a movie theater and sometimes i'm in the lobby for 8 hours straight where the "garden state" movie trailer plays this song about every 20 minutes. i still really like the song, it's just that i've heard it about 1000 times in the past few weeks, which definitely puts a damper on it. 2/5

4. fiona apple - extraordinary machine: now the mix goes from poppy electronic stuff to more conventional instruments, and it starts with this jazzy little bit. i never really listen to fiona apple, and this song kind of makes me want to. breathy vocals and some nice plucked strings going on. 3.5/5

5. the gossip - fire/sign: mix builds now. this song kind of reminds me of controller.controller, and i think i like it better actually. 3.5/5

6. les savy fav - yawn yawn yawn: i got "inches" without really finding out what it was like, just on pretty much word of mouth, and then i decided i didn't really like it. this one was just...ok to me i guess. 2/5

7. mclusky - she will only bring you happiness: this was definitely one of my favorite songs on this mix, if only for the vocals and the end with the constantly repeating lyric "our own singer is...a sex criminal" 5/5

8. chris brokaw - king ferdinand: opening with just guitars that made me tap drum beats with my fingers on my desk, this song starts off great, then proceeds to not really go anywhere. a decent instrumental song, but that's all i felt about it. 2.5/5

9. secret machines - nowhere again: i wasn't too keen on this song at first, but now i like it. it's got a good feel to it, a good beat, good vocals. a fun song. 3/5

10. smokey and miho - canto do cobloco pedra preta: i might've liked this song more had it been on a different track number in the mix, but where it is now, i felt that it really interrupted things. it was an ok song, but it just doesn't feel right where it is in the mix. 1.5/5

11. loretta lynn - mrs. leroy brown: a nice opening guitar part, which rises to a rockin song. i liked it. 3.5/5

12. the fiery furnaces - up in the north: i didn't like the beginning of this one, but it gets a lot better after it picks up a bit i think. it still seemed a little...all over the place though. 2.5/5

13. soul hooligan - soul searching: now the mix is going back to sort of electronic sounds. a nice bluesy song with what seems to be a cool sliced beat under piano and guitar and melancholic vocals and ok lyrics. 3/5

14. rjd2 - find you out: to start, this song has a pretty nice beat. then the vocals start, and my limited comprehension of spanish understands about half of them. i thought this song was pretty good, but nothing great. 2/5

15. animal collective - leaf house: animal collective scares me sometimes. i saw them live with mum and i was just like "oh my god what the hell is going on" when they started. but i mean that in a pretty good way. but they're a little (by which i mean completely) insane. 3/5

16. m. ward - outta my head: i didn't like all the layered guitar in the beginning of the song, but once the vocals started i didn't care anymore because it sort of comes together and makes something good. 3.5/5

17. the elected - don't blow it: i really like the elected's vocals. the instrument parts on this one were pretty cool too. 4.5/5

18. juana molina - salvese quien pueda: the vocals at the start of this track almost reminded me of a spanish speaking mirah. great voice, breathy and sweet. 4/5

19. the timeout drawer - terrible secrets revealed in an instant: now the mix seems to be going back to rock stuff. instrumental song, with sort of an epic feel to it, although it really starts too far into a build to go far. 3/5

20. the thermals - a stare like yours: i liked this song, even though the last few times i listened to the thermals i was kind of indifferent. i've never heard this song though, the only thermals songs i've heard were from more parts per million which i thought was just ok. 3.5/5

21. burning brides - alternative teenage suicide: a song like this would've made a nice ending for this mix, except for the fact that i didn't like the vocals very much. 2/5

overall: overall this mix had a good feeling to it, it sort of started off a bit electronic, then went to rock, then back, then back again. a few songs didn't really click with me, and a few times the mix's flow felt a little weird, but overall i had a favorable listening experience. it seems like hotarubi puts a lot of time and effort into these mixes, and that's always a good thing. 4/5

Hey guys, I am sooooo sorry to the people in my group but it doesn't look like I'll be able to get my mix out for this exchange. I do promise to fully review whatever I receive in the mail though. I just don't have a really good idea as to what I would put onto the mix, plus my burner isn't working properly right now since my comp needs a format. If I can somehow manage to get my shit together over this long weekend, I will. Otherwise, I feel like a shitbag for not coming through on this one.

Yoshifumi's mix came and conquered. Here's a review of disc 5-A (5-B to follow)

Califone - Michigan Girls - Great song. It has a real nice flow to it, that starts the CD off on a great note. Quiet rock, but not too quiet. One of my favourites on the CD. 9.5/10

Aarktica - Aura Lee - Beautiful song. Starts with a sparse drum (machine) and expands from there into a sonic rocksterpiece. It sounds like a slightly more mainstream Sigur Ros track. Very good. 8.5/10

Belle and Sebastian - Get me away from here, I'm dying - I'm not that big a fan of B&S, but this wasn't a bad track. Maybe I just miss the darker mood that the other two tracks set, but this track didn't sound like it belonged as much as the others. Upbeat, nothing's really wrong with the track, I just didn't like it that much. 5.5/10

Okkervil River - It ends with a fall - Moving away from the bubbly B&S, we have slower paced song that I really dug. The rhythm was really nice. . Great voice. Good music to listen to on a foggy day. 8/10

The Decemberists - The Soldiering life - This song gives me a Beatles vibe. Very retro, with some great lyrics and a ringy tune. Much like the third track, it's lighter, but this time I really liked it. (I think I know why it reminds me of the Beatles...The start of the verses sounds almost exactly like Eleanor Rigby.) Fun song. If I listened to the last one on a foggy day, I'd play this as the sun came out. 8.5/10

The Rentals - Brilliant Boy - The first hard(ish) rock song of the album. I've heard some of their songs before, but this is my favourite. Awesome guitars...cool beat. Despite being unlike the other songs, it really belongs on the mix. 7.5/10

Rilo Kiley - Spectacular Views- Fantastic song. Man, I remember hearing some of their stuff before, but I just forgot about them after that..After hearing this I'm going to grab whatever I can of theirs. The singer has a fantastic voice..the music is really upbeat, but without losing its edge. Great choice for the mix. 9.5/10

Alkaline Trio - Armaggeddon- Not much I can say about this song. The song revolves around its chorus, and I didn't really dig that. Short song <3m so I didn't mind listening to it. It was a good charge for the CD. 6.5/10

Rise Against - Like the Angel - Now this song I like. Great guitars, awesome flow to it. T he guy's voice went really well with the music. I'd listen to this anytime. Maybe I'm biased, because I have a Rise Against CD :D 8.5/10

Jets to Brazil - Resistance is futile - Good song. I'm running out of ways to talk about these tracks, heh. I really like Jets to Brazil, they're the emo group that never made it big! Not my favourite song of theirs, but since I haven't heard it, it's new to me! 7/10

The Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven - Yoshi's playing the safe card with this pick ;) Hehe, I love the Pixies..I can't say anything bad about this track, not that I want to. I've heard this song in the past, but it sounds better after every listen. Everything rocks in this song. Lyrics, vocals, music..It just kicks ass, Pixies style. 9/10

Coldplay - Don't Panic - I remember hearing this song on their CD and passing it up, but after watching Igby Goes Down (which had the song in it) I just had to listen to the track again...and again. It's my favourite Coldplay track, and although it's not "fresh" after hearing it on this mix, it's just as good as ever. Oddly enough, the chorus is the weakest part of the song. 8.5/10

Iron and Wine - Naked as we came - Nice song...the singer has a really smooth voice, and it fits the guitars really well. One of the more folksy songs on the mix. Short track as well <2.5 minutes..It helps wrap up the CD in a very nice way. 7.5/10

Explosions in the sky - Six Days at the bottom of the ocean - Taking a page from my book ;) by having an epic song at the end of the CD (it's the only way to do it!) he knocks one out of the park. Much like Godspeed... or Sigur Ros' work this song is an aural masterpiece. A quiet storm, only without Tim Meadows and the shitty SNL writing. A perfect song to drift off to, but without actually letting you fall asleep...This track is just, as I said before, epic. 10/10

Great Mix. I'll post my review of the other (electronic) mix later. If a mix review thread goes up, feel free to move these posts to that thread.

Oh, and Yoshi.....don't kill me! I was in a drunken fit and I put Let Go on my CD. :( :( :( I'm such a poseur.

Okay, so I decided to get off my ass and actually do my mix! Here is the final tracklisting. I need to go out and buy some blank cds, as well as some printer paper while i work on the cover.

1. Mogwai - Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home
2. Explosions in the Sky - The Only Moment We Were Alone
3. Do Make Say Think - Soul and Onward
4. Mogwai - Rage Man
5. Rachel's - First Self-Portrait Series
6. Eluvium - An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death
7. A Northern Chorus - Mombassa
8. Death in Vegas - Girls
9. Maserati - Being President is Like Riding A Tiger
10. Do Make Say Think - Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!

It's a small tracklisting but there are some pretty epic tunes in here and it clocks in at about 65 minutes. I really hope my group likes instrumentals. I'll get this out by Tuesday or Wednesday if my burner doesn't give me any problems.

EDIT: And here is my front and back CD art...

I sent out my mixes a couple of weeks ago. I know Archaix received it but how about my other group members? Jim Bowie and =W=, I'm looking in your direction. I hope the three of you have had a chance to listen. What did you think?

I'm quite looking forward to receiving some mixes, too. Archaix, did you manage to get some blank cds?

I should, in theory, send mine out towards the latter end of this week. I get paid tomorrow, and it all depends on how much I can budget out of that.

Okay, I just don't want it to end up like the last exchange...only ONE person reviewed my mix, out of three in total. And I only got one mix in the mail. :-\

Yeah, I received it a couple weeks ago. Sorry, but things have been kind of messed up around here. I've got my mixes, I just need to scrounge up some cash to get them sent off. Should be soon though. The review will probably have to wait until this weekend or early next week though. Sorry for the delay.

Alucard - Still working on it. I'll get it out by the hurry it up deadline at the latest. In any case, I have my blank cds and my envelopes and cases all ready though.

I'll be sending stuff at the beginning of next week, so expect about a week or so in transit.

1. Baader Meinhof- "Baader Meinhof": Relaxedish, indie sounding dark piece. I dig it on a cerebral level but not on an ass shaking level if that makes sense.

2. Cat Power- "Crossboards style": Like much of Chan Marshall's music, I enjoy the basic structure and sound of her voice, but for me the song doesn't GO anywhere. Again, that's just me. Enjoyable enough.

3. British Sea Power- "Carrion( Commander Cloft's Mix)"- Stacatto guitars, good vocals, and decent lyrics. Sold! Will be picking up a British Sea Power album soonish.

4. Espers- "Meadow": Moody. Ethereal. Has strings! Perfect for my current maudlin mood, but may not bear up after repeatd listening. I'll certainly check these fellows out, though.

5. Electric Soft Parade- "Red Balloon for Me": Electicky. Decent enough if not spectacular. These guys have potential.

6. Super Furry Animals- "Mythod Cacwm": Good. I'm drunk. I didn't understand most of the lyrics, possibly in a foreign/made up language. I will finish this review when I wake up on Monday.

Yea, Lit's cover was pretty cool. My cover, on the other hand, was a horrible cop-out involving scissors, a tracklisting and clear tape.

Well, the 2nd mix arrived. I'm only missing 8 Bit's, Riz's and B'zchan's. :p (Everyone in my group)

I'm glad I went outside of the predetermined groups. Duke's mixes just showed up, and they look great. I'll listen to them, but I'll hold off on a review till things pick up again.

my review of fifty's uptempo mix:

i liked a lot of the stuff on this mix. faster paced party music mostly, that's how i'd describe it. my only complaint is the length of some of the songs sort of brought a few of them down a notch. i liked this one. the tracklist:

1. cassius - the sound of violence: a great start to the mix, which i thought was brought down a bit by the length, seeing as it clocks in at around 7 minutes. not that that stopped me from liking it; i still liked it quite a bit. 3/5

2. the originals - down to love town: a funky disco track, i liked it quite a bit, although it wasn't stuff i normally listen to. so it was quite refreshing. 4/5

3. paul johnson - hear the music: i found the opening minute and a half of this track to be really enjoyable, but thought it didn't really develop and so ended a little bland. a good song for background, but not as much for active listening or anything like that. 1.5/5

4. frou frou - must be dreaming: by far my favorite track on details, and probably my favorite track on this mix. awesome song. 5/5

5. fredrik stark - let down: like the third track on the mix, i thought this started off good, and then when i realized that it wasn't really going anywhere, i was disappointed. it was a good song when i was driving in california, but not really something to actively listen to. 2.5/5

6. the sunburst band - i'll be there for you: this was sort of like tracks 3 and 5 but for some reason i liked this track a lot more than both of them because of the vocals most likely. 3/5

7. supreme beings of leisure - golddigger: this is one of a few of the supreme beings of leisure songs i like, and it's pretty kickass. 4/5

8. gaelle - rain: when the mix got to this point i thought this song would've been better suited for the downtempo mix, but afterwards i realized the mix as a whole seemed to slow down a bit here. 3/5

9. frou frou - only got one: i really like frou frou these days (with the exception of let go which i am still really sick of) great vocals. 4/5

10. dzihan and kamien - smile: this track didn't really click much for me, i liked the vocals sometimes, and other times they seemed really weird. but overall it was an ok song, and when it picks up, the mix changes pace again. 2.5/5

11. stars - look up: i really like stars, even though they're almost disgustingly sugarcoated sometimes. but i really really liked them, and this track is great. when i was listening to this in california, my dad was all mad because of the melody that was stolen, which i thought was pretty funny because he seemed offended. 3.5/5

12. marvin gaye - rockin after midnight: can't go wrong with marvin gaye. 4/5

13. supreme beings of leisure - under the gun: i sort of liked this song, and sort of disliked it at other times, so i'm still pretty undecided on what i really think about it. 2.5/5

14. bebel gilberto - tanto tempo (remix): i liked this song, despite the fact that it didn't really get anywhere. i just like the little beeps that play in it. it was a good song. 3.5/5

overall: overall i thought the mix was a little bit of hit or miss, but it was definitely more hit than miss. a few tracks that felt a little bland, but great tracks by frou frou (although the frou frou track on the downtempo mix is bound to irritate me), stars, and marvin gaye. it flowed pretty nicely too. main drawback was the song length for me, but that was remedied by other tracks. 4/5

Ok, first I want to apologize to my mix group for not getting my mixes out yet. I have it prepared, my excuse is that due to the lack of funds, i.e. cash monies, I have no way of burning and shipping them at the moment. Second, thanks to CeruleanSilver, I recieved your mix. I will be listening to it shortly and reviewing it. Third, as an apology for my mixes being late, I will be sending out a 4 disk super mix (maybe 5), complete with cover art, to my group members. Also if anyone outside my group is interested I will also send it to you, all I ask is that you send me your mix or a mix you recieved and liked alot. Hopefully I will be able to send my mixes out soon, so CeruleanSilver, Swoon and Type9, sorry for it being late, they will be in the mail ASAP.
