I'm not getting why everyone is hating Pocket Full of Rainbows? It wasn't bad. I quite like how different it got from the original series. I agree it needed a bit more exposition, however. I imagine new viewers would have been very confused.

Caught ep 1 of Umi Monogatari. Was cute, not what I expected, have no clue what direction the show is going to take. Definitely has some of the charm of Kaleidostar and Princess Tutu. Will probably keep watching. Like the OP and Ed alot.

Eh.

The OP is freaking awesome, not so much the animation but the music's really simple and I like that. It's nice to not have a an assault on your senses sometimes and the OP's real laid back visually and musically, pretty relaxing.

The show however, I dunno, I guess the good "evil" priestess is a cool character, my guess is the show will suck but I've watched the first 2 episodes so far, will watch a few more before making up my mind.

Holy shit. Thanks to whomever recommended Caanan. That came out from left field. The description and photo at anidb made it look like another pedo-drama POS.

As long as they keep up the action and the animation quality, this should be the best anime since 2007. Anyone know which animation studio is doing this one?

BTW, has anyone heard if Miyamoto Musashi: Souken ni Haseru Yume turned out well. It's a Production IG samurai anime movie released last month.

I wasn't really impressed with Canaan outside of the art/animation. I will give it a few more eps but right now it reminds me of a more boring version of Black Lagoon

It may not have been as good as Black Lagoon, but it sure as hell was better than anything on right now (with the possible exception of the recent episodes of FMA).

Yeah, so far it reminds me of a Wolf's Rain/Darker than Black/Black Lagoon type show. Something pointless and pretty that I drop halfway through when I notice that it isn't going anywhere substantial.

Still, the director worked on some really well animated shows and directed Sword of the Stranger. So the animation is pretty much guaranteed to keep it going for a little while, in case they manage to put together a decent story.

Canaan is by PA Works. This is their second TV series, after True Tears. They also handle all the anime FMV scenes for the Professor Layton games.

Because it's a mostly incomprehensible narrative train wreck with none of the depth, substance, or gravitas that made the original anime series something special?

You forgot to mention it also looks like a fucking piece of shit, and not only does the new animation look underwhelming even for a TV show, but they applied some ugly ass filter to ensure the REUSED footage looks worse than it originally too! The entire movie looks like a wasted out piece of shit edited together in a video editor by someone who's clearly on acid. And I don't mean any of that in a good way. Lulz.

I'm more annoyed with them using scenes from the original in this with different lines. Very lazy and it made me turn it off. I'll watch it someday...

Just watched the first episode of Aoi Hana. I thought it was lovely. I really liked the pastel-coloured artwork, and the music. I think I'm going to enjoy this series.

It took a left turn for me after the magic girl stuff started happening. The first episode had such an Aria vibe that when the girls started transforming I actually had no idea what was going on. :lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed it :D

Just watched Saki 14.
Man, why does Gonzo sucks so fucking much? They have been able to make almost an entire episode reshowing the same damn flashback over and over. They really know how to kill the pacing as long as they can reach their wanted number of episodes.
I wish someone would license the manga, so I could get to read that, as it seems an interesting story all in all and the scanlastion is stopped at about 2 and a 1/2.

:lol Gonzo.

Anyway forgot that new season has approached, I'll grab Canaan tonight and watch it tomorrow. I'm excited.

Anybody watch the first episode of Needless?

Wow :lol

The ending was completely unexpected.

Show is in the same vein as Gurren Lagann with manliness and stuff... without all the epicness (for now). It was decent overall. We'll see where it goes from here.

TTGL was nowhere near as idiotic.

When I saw that I was like "wtf is this a musical?" but damn, I would not mind if there was a song in every episode. Out of the five shows I've seen this season, this is easily the best.

I'd like to think it was just a parody. I have no idea of course, but that's how I chose to see it and I thought it was hilarious. :lol

For a straight up eroge adaption Princess Lover was suprisingly great. Gorgeous animation and Norio Wakamoto being his awesome self.

The real underdog of the season is Bakemonogatari though. Finally a 1080p (and 60fps animation at times) show from Shaft/Shinbo and the visuals were simply jawdropping. Character designer is Akio Watanabe of SoulTaker fame which is my favorite Shinbo show and the first episode feels very similar. Production values are through the roof, every one of the five arcs/girls will get its own unique OP (animation and song, the third one will be done by Basquash! director Shin Itagaki) and the ED is by ryo/Supercell.

Its going to be a subbing nightmare though. This being Shaft there is a ridiculous amount of onscreen text, and its crucial to the plot. The first 90 seconds were a recap of the prequel novel on how the protagonist became a vampire and then human again. Without reading the text that gets completly lost.

Frostii has like five typesetters working fulltime on the first ep and it will still take a while. :lol

EDIT: Here are some pretty screenshots.

The baseball anime, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, was actually kinda charming, I'm pretty sure I'll stick with this one.

Aoi Hana has great art direction but I can't watch this shit. Don't like the characters nor am I a fan of lesbian shows.

Canaan I'm calling it, it'll suck. The first episode just seemed so lifeless, which is sad because the art was good, the animation was good, technically it's really well done it just feels soulless.

Still waiting for my sequels, Spice and Wolf and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, I don't feel like watching the raws right now.

Bakemonogatari was fairly interesting despite a couple boring talky scenes. Want more stuff like the opening, please. Also getting a little tired of this animation style. And Hiroshi Kamiya again? Sheesh.

Sora no Manimani looks to be my comedy pick of the season. Can't go wrong with the person who directed School Rumble and Gintama. :)

That song on Taishou Yakyuu Musume pretty much sealed the deal for me. I don't even know how baseball is played, so it's a learning process for me as much as the characters :-p That song was whimsical and fun, though, and I hope that charm can come over in the rest of the episodes.

The musical number in Taisho Yakyuu Musume totally reminded me of Animaniacs. As such, they better have one in every episode or they fail.

I have been away from Anime-GAF for over a year due to my broken powerbook. I have a macbook pro on the way finally should get it off the FedEx truck in about 5 hours.

Sat down and watched Canaan ep 1 twice over the span of two days and I really enjoyed it much more the second time through. The action is the highlight but the story isn't being laid bare just yet, and I have a giddy feeling that it won't at all until you watch it through its entirety for a second or third time. Hoping against hope that Ando is trying to pull off a Kamiyama or Oshii and succeed.

I don't think that would be fair to expect. Ando isn't writing the script, he's not in charge of the scenario, and he really doesn't show much interest in particularly telling a super compelling narrative or anything. When asked about his next project at AX last year, he said that it would be a TV series in 2009, set in modern day with "lots of action" but action of a "different sort" from Stranger.

Ando is a first and foremost an animator, that's his specialization. Going from animating action sequences to directing stuff which create the opportunity for creative action animation is what he's doing as a director now. As such, I don't really see him being anything like Kamiyama or Oshii. They've always been storytellers first and foremost, so it's pretty much a non-comparison.
