Kaiji S2 - 1-9

I haven't felt this satisfied after an anime episode since the Luffy vs Bellamy fight.
Very nice.

TBH I don't like any of the girls in Eva. They're too much like real people, or, in Rei's case, real
abominations of science.

mfw finishing this episode

That was uhhh certainly something. I dig the art style and the main character seems cool.

Gonna give this a few more episodes at least.

Hyouka - Episode 11

I liked the direction in this episode a lot. It was a good way to end the arc and reflect on the true purpose of this scenario and tie up loose ends. There were also some really nice close ups of Houtarou's hands in various scenes which I found particularly detailed and well animated this week.

What initially ticked me off about the conclusion was that
I thought Kyoto Animation was pulling evidence out of their ass when Houtarou was presenting the clues which led to his final conclusions. Since the start of the arc made it a point to emphasis the basic rules of detective fiction, I felt it was cheap that they would break one of the golden rules which was that the audience should have access to the same information the detective does.

But when I checked back on ep9, all the evidence was indeed shown in that episode. They were just presented in casual ways as the characters encountered them, and the pace and flow of the episode itself served as misdirection to help the audience forget about those pieces of info or to not pay attention to them much to begin with. In retrospect it's a pretty smart trick to pull, even if it sacrificed the quality of that episode itself in doing so.

This remains a really odd adaptation imo, because there's so much care and detail in the production of the series, but a lot of it feels so much like semi-wasted effort. In a sense there's a very close parallel with the actual theme in the show where Houtarou doesn't want to "waste his energy" on things which "don't matter", but he finds himself forced into doing so anyway. Maybe this show is really a cry for help from Kyoto Animation? Kadokawa is Chitanda? Or maybe Irisu! Lol.

Well, I guess they gotta flesh out the backstory of some of the characters every now and then buy they could at the very least try and make it more interesting.

It's a show everyone should see. No show has ever been such a fantastic train wreck of bad idea after bad idea. It's spectacular as it goes down in flames. Should be on AnimeGAF's must see list.
it's certainly been on my list for far too long

damn straight!

Arcana Famiglia 1

Tournament? Sign me up! Other than the promise of that, there wasn't much to the episode. Some oddly placed exposition and a general introduction to the conflict. Not really enough action to judge how it will be throughout the show itself, but it's promising at least. The arcana abilities seem kind of eh for now, but I'm more curious about application than anything else. Hoping for some well-animated strategic battles.

Subete no aware
13 episodes in of NGE now and im starting to like it alot.
No longer super hate Shinji.
Having only seen like five shows from the 90s, I'm willing to declare Shinji to be the best character of the decade.

Hyouka 11 - The best part of this show is how the characters treat the most trivial things as if they were the most important events to happen in their lives. It really asks you to invest yourself in these almost trivial matters as much as you would, say, the billionth murder on CSI: the Mentalist Closer who fought Law and Order at the Castle and found some Bones.

I found it interesting that the stakes were basically turned around on the audience on this one - the gimmick of the mystery wasn't the mystery at all, but an actual examination of
Oreki and his character - not in a literary sense, but his actual character as a human being. The fact that it never occurred to him why no one bothered to ask Hongou says more about how he sees people around him and how his desire to shut off from the rest of the world actually affects who he wants to be - ie, the famous detective. Tie it to Holmes itself, a man who is characterized as an anti-social genius who has no time for people, and it fits fairly beautifully.

This was probably very interesting to read as a novel, but like all the other mysteries in the show, I can totally understand why everyone would find it dull - especially since it was spread out across four episodes.

Still,
Oreki's near mental breakdown at the loss of what defines him - the fact that he wants to be considered a "famous detective" - is really what was at stake here and the way they allowed him to basically turn into the smug asshole who is proven wrong is a great arc.
Come to think of it, it's basically an episode of House.

The fact that
his sister (unless it's someone else) called it from the very beginning and manipulated Irisu into manipulating him was almost devious in a way. Especially since her original goal is to get him to change the way he looks at the world by getting him to join the Classic's club in the first place!

Man. The more I think about it, the more I'm willing to believe that Hyouka - the text - is genius. You take it on whatever terms you want to, but you're asked to be a detective in your own way... indeed, it really is like House,
where most people aren't able to solve the medical mysteries and the point is to "solve" the doctors and their foibles instead.

Maturity, bitches.
Sitting at work knowing I could be watching AKB0048 is so depressing.

At least it's YuruYuri time soon.

Mondays have never been so genki.

loved the range of emotions that oreki goes through.

the more chitanda and oreki alone time, the more interesting the show becomes!

tari tari 1

really solid first episode. cast seems interesting and varied at this early stage.

a few scenes got a laugh out of me, mainly the transfer students antics and the porn stash

animation is pretty nice and so is the music.

will check out a few more.

Ooh, apparently there was a nice little P.A. Works self-reference in Tari Tari -- the song the chorus club was singing is the opening theme to True Tears, Reflectia.

noticed this as well!

yeah, couldn't help but notice how amazing the school looked.
