The Shangri-la trailer on the one piece set actually presents a really compelling and interesting universe, but is that really the main character? Dont know if I will ever persue it.

Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror kind of looked good, hopefully they put it on their site so I can check out, doubt Id buy it but it just looks like a really unique and creative world, visually impressive too and the dub trailer doesnt sound bad.

Castle Vidcons the anime?

Castle Vidcons, wow. It's been ages since I visited that site. I see he is as sparse updating as ever. :p

GTO 2012 - Episode 5

That was an intense episode. While I liked the previous episodes I felt they didn't pack the punch of "GTO". This is likely due to being retreads and remixes of story arcs that fail to quite capture the feel of the original source material. Still, the remixing is a good thing.

Back to the episode at hand, I found it had the "intensity" I felt when reading the manga. Being original to the 2012 series, I found the story didn't have this "toned down to TV" feel as scenes in previous episodes adapting manga scenarios.

I was a little surprised to see the
"You are better off without parents."
line from Onizuka. Though that may have more to do with what I expect from North American shows geared toward the same age group GTO is. When I think of the line in more of the context of the situation it makes perfect sense.

Next week appears to be
Fuyutsuki's breakdown and the school trip
, should be interesting.

The composer for Disgaea and Motoi Sakuraba are probably my favorite composers, Disgaea has like no bad songs and Beautiful Round Dance is amazing. I also love the Running Fire, the songs for Captain Gordon too. MidBoss is always hilarious.

I can't believe I forgot about Captain Gordon. He's definitely another one of my favorite characters.

Yeah, off the top of my head I can't really think of any bad songs in the game. Another personal favorite of mine is Planet X that plays when you get to
Celestia
. The fights there are both pretty intense and fun.

I've never seen the Disgaea anime but I've heard it's only so-so. Most people recommend just playing the game but I think it's only twelve episodes, so I'll at least take a look at it.

I've actually bought Disgaea 2 as well. I should probably start playing that at some point.

The anime felt really like just for fans of the game and I thought it was enjoyable...if you love Disgaea 1.

The anime was ok. The story was lacking since it didn't really follow the game's that much and it was much more for the laughs than just actual story.

It's too bad they never did any other series based off the other games. Those would probably have had more potential.

i've bought all the portable disgaea games, only finished 1 and just the story.

I'd probably enjoy the games more if i enjoyed the genre more >.<

I think enough during school and work, don't wanna rev my brain during my break time much.

Which is why i watch anime. :3

YES! This is what I've been waiting for! These duels are friggin amazing. So much shit going on at once that it's hard to follow. I especially liked the one against the swimming dude, but they've all been good to some extent. Good action and even a not bad strategy in that one fight. Next episode should continue this awesomeness.

Disgaea had to be the most overrated game ive ever bought

So what about it inspires the need to invalidate the opinions of those who enjoy the game rather than simply saying "I don't like it"?

In general I'm really pleased with how little the o-word is used in animegaf.

Considering how often things are described as shit/bad/sucks here it seems silly to single out Uchip just for using a particular (and weaker) pejorative.

Nah, "overrated" is inherently different in that it attempts to discredit anyone who disagrees on top of making a statement on something's quality. While calling something "shit" and whatnot is often unnecessarily harsh, it's not trying to make an objective statement.

"Shit" doesn't seem much different to me. Either you agree with the person or you have shit taste.

If you call something overrated, you're not even necessarily calling it bad. Just less awesome than the hype surrounding it implied.

I don't recall the first game having any anime styled "cinema scenes" but I believe the second one does. Do the games get more of those as the series continues or is it really just for the odd big story event?

I bought the game on eBay for $80 when it was hard to find. My save file has well over 100 hours. I regret nothing.

I think when I bought my copy it was about the equivalency of $30 USD.

I liked Disgaea but personally found it much too grindy. I only did the main story section as well for that reason. It's quite possible that I wasn't used to the mechanics though as I don't play many strategy or tactical RPGs either.

Grinding is pretty much the entire point of Disgaea. The games are designed around maximizing the amount of grinding a player can do, which is why I've always found the games shallow and boring.

Eeeeeh only if you pursue the post-game content. I've never needed to grind (much) in a Disgaea game to clear the main story.

Nah, it's mostly for the big story events and even then those are pretty rare.

I loved the first game's faux next episode previews. It would have been awesome if they could have been fully animated cinematics.

within the community I was in the game was hyped to all hell, and I found it to be just a bit too budget for my liking.
this is coming from someone that plays fire emblem too.
don't get upset because you had a different experience, thanks.

For me personally, I can really really hate something without believing that the people who like it have bad taste for liking it. I think that most of us here have engaged in these sort of "taste" debates long enough to accept that it's possible to divorce the concepts of quality and likability at least some of the time, otherwise every debate on whether or not a show is "good" would devolve into taste-questioning.

"Overrated" doesn't have to outright slam something, but it's almost never used solely in the context of "I don't see what everyone else sees in _____". It's kind of evolved to become an all-purpose criticism that doesn't really say anything at all, but if you're conscientious about trying to use it in a neutral manner, that's great. It's just one of my pet peeves when it's used in place of an argument.

Its been so long since I checked the manga for this, but was Davy Back really so long in it that it needed to span this entire volume of episodes and more (they ended this volume on a cliffhanger of Afro Luffy). Lots of moments were hilarious in it but then lots of the moments were also too dragged out boat race, roller race, etc. Sanji and Zoro are so awesome and hilarious. Really the episode Ive been dying to see for the longest time was their team sport. Decent set of episodes.

Best line of dialogue from them

But need to go back and watch skypeia once I get it, funimations awkward release schedule...

That seemed to be the exact context that Uchip was using it in, though. :p I think you're just reading into it too much because the word itself is your pet peeve.

I don't want to put words in Uchip's mouth just to further my argument, so I'll err on the side of this being the case. I still think that it's a word that should be avoided at all costs, though!

Don't worry Uchip, I'm only tough because I care. <3

I don't even know what I'm trying to say but this sounds conciliatory enough

The davy back fight was extended in the anime with new rules and new events ..it's much shorter in the manga ..
They probably did this because it would be a shame to get all those new voices and not do a lot with them ... that why they use them even later in fillers

That arc was a simple but short arc after all the events of skypiea were the author went wild a little and the anime was at the time quite close to the manga ... So there were plenty of reasons to gain some time

Crest of the Stars 1-2

So, that first episode was one of those dull exposition episodes that I've come to expect and loathe in science fiction/fantasy works. And hey, that wouldn't be a problem if it was at least delivered in an interesting way instead of through some random scenes anchored by the secretary guy and his poorly written conversation with the younger Jinto.

It actually put me off taking the second episode seriously unfortunately:
I suppose I don't mind teens in space (I sat through Space Pirates after all), but given that they had actual adult characters in the first episode, making it about teens in space was just something I wasn't expecting.

I think I'm going to shelve the show for now. The latest episodes of Space Battleship Yamato are out anyway.

Joshiraku 4

I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying this show. It's certainly not all hits - in fact, the middle of the three sketches in each episode is consistently more misses. It tends to be heavily leveraged on cultural references and Japanese wordplay, and that's not something I can really appreciate. You'd think that setting a show primarily in one room would get tiresome, but ironically it's these sketches that change up the locale which end up being the weakest. It does provide a welcome opportunity to put the girls in attractive casual wear.

The outer sketches, on the other hand, have generally been successful, and that's a good enough ratio for me. They are at their peak when they are unpacking a character eccentricity, such as the "masculine Marii" and "lucky Tetora" skits in episode 3, or engaging in gratuitous violence, such as the first and last sketches of this episode. I may never get tired of seeing cute girls beat each other up.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 5-6

Yep. It's confirmed. This is the most cliched and by the books military scifi show ever, but I love it.

Gruff chief engineers:

Even gruffer captains spouting off nonsense technobabble orders:
LFWb7l.jpg

(Trim? Why the fuck does a Space Battleship (let alone a Battleship :p) have sails to trim? Who cares, it sounds cool!)

And of course, lots of starship fighting porn, which also includes my favourite "wide shot of fights in dogfight with tracer rounds streaking across a starry backdrop" shot:

That's not to say the show isn't totally free of anime-isms:
eFxrzl.jpg

:chet and ahoge? Yeah, why not.

Man, this silly show has got me so hyped that, if it wasn't for how godawful it turned out, I almost want to re-watch nuBSG. Or heck, maybe it's time for season 4 of Babble-On Five or some SG-1.
