Hyouka - 17

It's probably one of the strongest individual arcs in recent years, and will remain so for quite some time. One of those things where seemingly everything comes together in a very pleasing way, and where the payoff is as good as the setup. I've had my complaints about Hyouka, but the Festival arc is the best thing to happen this season.

Let's hope that the last few episodes can maintain this sort of fun and quality.

Final Score: 2.4/10

This is why scores are a necessity!

Natsuyuki Rendevous] - 6 & 7

This show rarely fails to deliver in terms of powerful emotional content that's delivered to the audience via effective visuals and a script that managed to feel believable and natural despite the supernatural premise of the work.

I'm happy to see that the show has managed to maintain it's consistently impressive level of visual coherence despite the drop in quality that occurred for the fourth episode. Of course, this could just be because Matsuo himself directed both episodes 6 & 7, so if they didn't look up to scratch the show would be in trouble.

I'm a couple of weeks late to comment on any particular aspects of the story or character development because I can see that you've all already discussed that. Personally I don't really mind that the last few episodes have had Haruki sidelined because I've enjoyed seeing how they've developed the other characters. Despite all that I hope that Haruki has more of a role to play in next week's episode because I feel like we've spent enough time 'drawing this out'.

Also, this script can be delightfully blunt:

Hyouka 12

The beginning of the Cultural Festival arc.
Good stuff. This episode had a little of everything. Except Misaki. where is she? I DEMAND MORE MISAKI!
Still, it was a interesting episode. no mystery, just selling Hyouka anthologies. Or trying to.
Well, Oreki sold one...to umm...a punk.
Chitanda is pretty cute when she cosplays.

Chitanda is cute when she's curious. And she is overwhelmingly curious this arc :)

So tired. Feel like my eyes are going to pop out. @_@

Pretty badass of Luffy to go back to Marineford to pay his respects. Now get to the time skip already!

I really feel like Natsuyuki Rendezvous manages to walk the fine line of an having emotionally heavy (and often draining) story without becoming excessively sappy or depressing. Despite how inherently unhappy and painful the work can be it never feels like 'sadness porn' on the same level that something like [Sengoku Collection] - 18 does.

I agree. The show has a general level of restraint that tends to pull it back a bit from being overly heavy with those elements. There's a certain amount of humor used, some characters being self deprecating about their respective situations for example, that has helped in this regard I think. The straightforward dialogue and interactions often keep it from getting too sappy as well, the show tends not to linger on certain events for too long and the characters seem to take action quickly rather than drawing everything out.

It seems like he has experience on action/shounen stuff. Just not as the director. Should be interesting.

I was looking at Koji Masunari's work list the other day and saw that he directed my favorite episode of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure OVA - the gambling one. Of course that was ages ago, but still - props to him!

Well, that's the end of that chapter and what a treat this arc has been. I don't really need to go into too much detail about why this arc has been effective (because I'm being lazy) but it's pretty clear that most people here think that it's been the highlight of the show and possibly of this whole season of anime. I wouldn't go quite that far, considering how great Natsuyuki Rendevous has been, but I will certainly echo the near-universal praise that has been awarded to it.

However, in the end it's still tied into a show that's been, for the most part, a boring experience so unfortunately one great arc can't make up the rest of the series and so I'd be hesistent to recommend Hyouka to anyone I know. However, if the rest of the series carries on at this level and ends well than perhaps I'd be be able to say "Just jump in to Hyouka at the start of the Cultural Festival and watch from there".

I would have to disagree. After episode 6, and even episodes 3-5 are pretty watchable.
Pretty much the very beginning and episode 6 are the only episodes that I really felt detracted from the experience of Hyouka so far. Otherwise it has been fun for me.

I'm still cool!
LOOOOOVE ME!!! D:<

Its ok, I still love you Lurky ^_^

I have not been bored by a single episode of Hyouka; some have been weaker than others but they've all been enjoyable on one level or another. (I say this with the caveat that I skipped episode 6.)

Anytime there's a flashback to the first two episodes, the more I wish it was its own thing given how divorced it is from the actual show. I think they might carry a greater weight if we're catching glimpses of remembered violence from Yui's past rather than it being recycled clips. More setup but next ep looks like it'll be some action.

You skipped the correct episode. There is absolutely nothing of value that you missed.
Maybe Jex has a point here about skipping episodes, albeit a very circumstantial one.

Mei beats a Yuru Yuri girl? That's impressive!

And Team Shinobu, Yuno and Chihaya!

Of course Mei won. Mei is AMAZING.
Also you chose teams wisely.

Yeah I feel the same. I didn't start really enjoying the show until Episode 3. I just really enjoyed that cafe conversation for some reason. After that with the exception of Episode 6 (though I kinda liked the whole Arcana conversation I guess) I've really been impressed with it. It's definitely a weird show to recommend to others and as much as I love it, I can sympathize with people who find it boring. I just love the directing, the art, and the character interactions enough to find enjoyment out of it.

I do understand why some people are annoyed by Chitanda. She is like =O 80% of the time. She looks like a goldfish, granted a VERY CUTE goldfish.

Code Geass: Nunnally in Wonderland

A dark hipster take on the Code Geass story.

Grade:

Overall : F
Overall (sub) : C-
Story : A
Animation : A
Art : D-
Music : D

+ Truly subversive, dark, and unique take on the magical girl genre. Wildly creative art direction.

− Limited episode count and high price of entry make the show inaccessible to an audience unwilling to shell out. No Pizza Hut references.
