So apparently I'm required by the NeoGAF ToS to post my impressions of Blood-C here as I marathon it.

Blood-C 1-2

This is a cruel, cruel series. Saya clearly has considerable learning difficulties and/or superior canal dehiscence syndrome, yet her father manipulates her into risking her life running around with a sword carving monsters up. Disgusting.

Unless things miraculously improve, we're looking at a strong contender for the most uninteresting supporting cast ever. I'm finding it difficult to imagine circumstances in which I could give a damn about them or anything that happens to them.

The town weirds me out. Not sure whether they were just being lazy in not adding any people to the traversing scenes, but it feels incredibly desolate/lonely. Hinamizawa seems more inviting than this place.

On the plus side, the action segments are engaging and suitably messy. I'm assuming they'll be the show's saving grace.

Do I need to have seen Blood+ before starting this? I think I watched a few episodes of it ages ago, but I can't remember anything that happened.

Heh I finally got around to finishing this show about five minutes ago. Those last few episodes were too incredible to put into words. Also you should go back and re read this post after you are done with the. Your intuition is incredible.

wut...wut...aw shit. OW FUCK

What the christ am I watching and why am I excited to watch more

I never got more than a couple episodes in but that first episode was something else, it was really cool how they went like the first 12 minutes of that episode without anyone speaking at all. Should probably get around to catching this someday.

I would rather trust Saya with my life than listen to any more of this god awful dialogue. The characters are utterly insufferable and every time two or more of them 'interact' I want to reach through the screen and throttle them. But I virtually never drop (anime) series and the action side of things is still decent, so on I go.

If they'd tone down the dialogue and focus more on the wonderful claret showers then this would be far more relevant to my interests.

I'd normally consider that a character flaw but in this case it will be an asset to you.

Windaria aka Once Upon A Time

This is the tree of Windaria. In case you were wondering, yes, they did name the anime after the tree, and no, it has no importance to the plot, themes, characters, or anything whatsoever to do with the film. I can't even call the fake foreshadowing ("I HOPE NOTHING EVER HAPPENS TO THE TREE OF WINDARIA!!") at the beginning of the movie Chekov's herring b/c it feels more like something they accidentally left in the script & couldn't take out because they were dead fucking set on naming the movie after it, or something. Just to reiterate, Windaria has NOTHING TO DO with anything in the movie Windaria.

The biggest active problem in the film is the amateur hour editing. An average scene would start with a montage of a city, and then thirty seconds in with no particular rhyme, rhythm, or reason music of either the 'generic orchestral' or 'shitty 80s pop' varieties would begin to play; before the end of the montage the music would completely fade away, the shot would awkwardly hold for another 20 or 30 seconds, and then it would comically enforce the old adage about cutting to seagulls flying overhead when a director doesn't know how to end a scene by ending EVERY SCENE in the goddamn movie with these goddamn red spectral birds

that do absolutely nothing for 99% of the movie until the plot needs them even more than the editor does.

Upfront I was really impressed by the effects animation; though cycled a bit too much and too obviously, there's clearly a lot of care that went into animating the significant amount of water in the movie, as well as fire, smoke, dust, and all of that other stuff I find pleasing to mine eye when lovingly drawn by slaveworkers being paid in units of ramen.

Unfortunately, I kinda eventually realized that solid FX animation is the main thing the movie has going for it. The character animation is OK, so OK I didn't even remember to form an opinion on it. The characters themselves are pretty stock and uninteresting, and the commendably radical arcs over which they're developed (rocketed, more like) are sorta sabotaged by the extreme melodrama of the plot. So they end up feeling like they basically change into completely different people over the course of the story mainly because the creators wanted to emphasize the relentless TRAGEDY of their plight
before they learn their lesson anyway...
.

I didn't really ever find the art direction to be notable - I want to call the look a sci-fi/fantasy mix typical of the period but those elements are so muted they're barely worth mentioning (cause like, there's a hovercar used to ferry them from plot point to plot point, lollers) - but the crude and extremely 80s look to the character designs at mid-to-far distance detracted from an otherwise decent looking film. They'd even pull close-ups every once in a while just to taunt me with the fact that they're too lazy to make the film look this good all of the time:

I'm also kinda mad that the Italian title for this thoroughly mediocre movie is C'era una volta Windaria because it doesn't deserve the association, goddamnit.

All I know about Windaria is that ANN did a review singing it's praises a while back (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/buried-treasure/2008-07-17/windaria).

Icarus: Watching movies on my backlog so that I don't have to.

Wakfu 1-3 - anime, because Japan = Korea = America = France

In spite of being adapted from an MMO (!!) this actually seems like a pretty solid kids show with a valiant (& rare, for a baka gaijin cartoon) attempt at some sort of a centralized plotline while following a mostly episodic format.

That said, while the art is pretty detailed for the style used and clearly had a bit of effort put into it, I really find the computer animation awkward and grating and overall just generally pretty uggo. I don't think I can get over this but I will press on nonetheless.

Oddly enough, the most amusing thing about these episode was, hands-down, listening to the voice actors overemote and say ridiculous made-up phrases in French. It's just that kind of language.

I watched a few sporadic episodes just to check out the animation. I had heard that it was done in flash, but to a degree that no one else had done. I left it pretty impressed; however, I had no desire to come back to it. The animation may be great, but I didn't care for the story or the art style

Also,

AnimeGAF's motto.

For my adoring fanbase of 0, I leave you a top 10 list as a present for making it to the end of this irritatingly long post, even though you probably just skimmed past the whole goddamn thing I spent 20 minutes typing up, you asshole. You're welcome.

Hey, I read that! Now I will ignore your top ten out of spite...

Kingdom 8

This was... actually a pretty good episode! From the very impressive scenery artwork to the engaging talk between Zheng and the Mountain King it was a fairly enjoyable thing to watch, QUALITY art aside. It really does help that the pacing has picked up and it actually feels like stuff is finally starting to happen.
I was pretty surprised that the Mountain King was a actually a woman!

It looked like this episode was going to be CG free but alas it was not meant to be thanks to the last 15 seconds:

Break Blade 1

Unfortunately, the great action is marred by the terrible characters.[...] the generic clumsy girl who can't pilot a mech well at all but is still on the special task force for some reason (oh, and she's 12 years old)

You forgot to mention that the 12 year old girl looks like she's 18 and the 18 year old girl looks like she's 12.

Air abacus, air shogi, Mutta doing hilarious stuff and Kenji finding answers from a toilet. How can this show be so amazing despite some characters doing weird stuff.

The speech and history was impressive especially the voice of the mountain king to the reveal. Though they may need more support based on numbers alone.

Well part of the purpose of the show is to contrast Shu's relentless optimism with the harsh reality of the world. It's kind of like the Madoka of hot-blooded shounen shows.
Except Shu's real strength is his plot armor and wooden plot weapon that can defeat anything except the plot armor field of Hamdo.

And the show tries to sell itself as serious drama. *rolls eyes*

Well, I didn't see anyone who looked like they were 12. Perhaps she hasn't shown up yet?

I am pretty sure she's in the first movie, but it's been a long time since I watched Break Blade and I haven't bothered committing much of it to memory.

Blood-C 5

Am I missing something or did Saya just poke out eyeball woman's... eyeball with something that was very definitely not a sacred sword?

Anyway, it was refreshing to see some action early in the episode for a change, rather than having to sit through at least 10 minutes of torture to get to it. The ending also makes me hopeful that some non-nameless characters are going to get brutally massac-- er, drawn into the fighting.

Blood-C 6

Oh sweet lord yes, this is exactly what this series needed. It's now officially open season
on all of the cast
. If there are any characters not named Saya
still alive at the end
I'll be very disappointed.

Okay, seriously. Cognitive problems, way too much focus on the coffee, the close up of his eye, him saying she's more important to him than anything else. All I can hear while typing this are alarm bells. I'm thinking he's mysterious voiceover guy and that he's doping her up with his own special blend for some twisted reason.

Also, don't think I'm ignoring you guys, I'm just trying skim over your comments for sake of not getting spoiled on anything (no matter how small it might be).

I'm not famaliar enough with any of those to make a good reccomendation. I just remember not liking what I read of pandora Hearts and I've only seen the E7 anime. Now that I think about it I don't think I've ever read any mecha stuff.
Well, there's no point in reading about mecha because manga lack JAM project soundtracks.

Break Blade 1

In my search for more recent mecha action, I came across this OVA series from 2011. As far as the mecha goes, it doesn't disappoint.

I was really excited to watch Break Blade but after two episode I realized it's just Gundam in the desert so I bailed out as fast as I can.

People should watch BB at least till eps 3-4. Some great mecha porn there.

Its a incomplete (n not faithful?) adaptation anyway, you can just ignore the plot.

Hunter x Hunter 41

Feitan and Shalnark (seems like a clone of sorts of Kurapika design?) are my favorite of the Phantom Troupe. Though Feitan could have had a better voice, I think. The rest of the troupe are alright. The leader, Lucifer, has a great personality, though if he even excites Hisoka, I cant even begin to imagine just how powerful he is. The nen sticking lady is probably the better of the female members.

I hope no more threads open up in the plot it seems like a lot is about to happen with the plots, Kurapika's and Phantom Troupe, Phantom Troupe and auction, Diviner girl, Neon, and Auction, and Gon Killua and Greed Island and Auction. If people have to clash I guess Phantom Troupe will be devastated by Killua, though maybe Kurapika will also be successful in his endeavor.

Hunterpedia had a great moment, of course Killua is better at attacking Gon.

I think I'm gonna pick up Space Bros.

I watched Planetes about a year or so ago. Are comparisons to this show appropriate? I was avoiding Space Bros because initially I thought it was just piggy-backing Planetes. But if it's good, it's good.

Not really. Despite revolving around, you know, astronauts, they're fairly different works in terms of their characters, tone and pacing. Strangely enough the element that ties both shows together more than setting is the concept of 'pursuing you dream', even if that is an extremely standard plot element.

Space Brothers is a far more relaxed show because it has so many episodes to work with. It's extremely concerned with slowly developing characters over the course of the show, as opposed to having lots of individual 'story arcs' where characters get sudden burst of character growth.

If i had to make a top 10 list:

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Toward the Terra
Fantastic Children
Princess Tutu
Baccano!
Natsume Yuujinchou
Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse
Darker than Black S1
Paranoia Agent
Ouran High School Host Club

Well, at least I know where you're coming from, as a person. I, personally, would choose Mushi-Shi over Natsume but that's just me.

Hmm, thanks I didn't remember where I dropped this anime...I think it was here.
