Maturity, bitches.
How's everyone holding up? GTAV is pretty great.
Hi! You seem to be new here. This thread for discussion about anime in general and not Grand Theft Auto V. If you'd like to talk to others about that game you can do so in the thread over is gaming side [thread=680709]here[/thread].

Hope that helps and enjoy your time on NeoGAF. :3

My little sister informed me there is a Magic Tree House anime. Which kinda blew my mind because I liked the Magic Tree House books as a kid and thought how random it totally was for THAT book series to be adapted into a Japanese film.

I've only seen about a third of it so far, but oh my gosh Jack and Annie are the cutest little americanos I have ever seen in anime.

Edit: lol unfortunate typo

Nothing is going to happen.
Well I always feel the need to complete what I've started unless it's truly boring me i.e. Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere. Glad I got out of AoT in time before I got too invested into the plot.

Don't ask why I know this but Annie is voiced by the girl who played Rin in the Live Action Usagi Drop movie and she's also the little girl in Pacific Rim.

Here's a question to anyone watching Monogatari.
I watched Bakemonogatari, which I loved and (most of) Nisemonogatari, which I disliked. Will I like the new series? Looking for somethign ot watch..

You'll like Monogatari. There are more actual apparitions and conflict in there. It's not just Araragi's fantastic loli kawai sister loving adventures this time.

I cannot find fault in Momo's plans or logic. She rightfully is the best choice, for Rito, and for the Universe.

God, I love To LOVE-ru. Guilty pleasure, yes, but no shame in it.

First season was kinda dull and took some willpower to get trough. Motto Love-ru was already better and this Love-ru darkness has been legitimately pretty enjoyable. Less of Haruna and Lala and more of Momo and Yami seems to be recipe for the success.

One Piece 67

This has been a good little run of episodes since hitting the Grand Line. Laboon -> Whiskey Peak -> Baroque Works stuff has transitioned super smoothly. Ep had some really nicely animated cuts too which was cool.

I see Robin finally appears.

Kinda miss the old art style...

pretty much people's arcs from bakemonogatari become fully developed in this season, its been very fun so far

Almost certainly yes. Nise is generally agreed to be the weakest of the series, the new material is all good stuff. (Though I still love Nise...)

Also, don't forget to watch the four-episode Nekomonogatari Black before starting on Monogatari SS proper!

What was it about Nisemonogatari that you disliked? The new series (to me anyway) is like a hybrid of the two.

Yeah...I watched the two Gurren Lagann movies.

They were good. Very good. That show gave me pretty much everything I could have asked for in a mecha-adventure anime. The movies just gave me more. It felt like no other show could I watched after that would give me the same experience that Gurren Lagann did.

So I took a break from the anime scene after watching the two movies. But now that Fall is just around the corner I'm slowly trying to get back in there. I'll probably post my impressions of episode 10 sometime tomorrow.

Fair enough. thats a perfectly legitimate reason to take a break from Kino!

Before or after Dream Machine?

;_;
That hurts!

Yes you should. Nise was weak for lack of Senjou but the new series rectifies this!

I just saw the episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena where one on the characters wears a cowbell and starts to act like a cow. Absolutely baffling and incomprehensible episode. There are aspects of the Japanese psyche that I will never even begin to understand. Their culture is truly alien sometimes.

That was just Ikuhara and cows. Not a cultural thing.

Didnt know Konohamaru had other friends good for him. Episode was largely flashback and Suigetsu saying he hates everyone but still sticking around, and in this format he and Jugo really do constantly stick up and protect Sasuke deeds, good thing their permanently devoted.

Did chp 574...so were still 73 chapters behind current, surprisingly no filler on the horizon at least through oct 10 episode listings...

Aoi Bungaku - Run, Melos 1

Now, this is some awesome shit.

ibqK2E4TEZnz8.jpg

CG shit, more like.

"Run, Melos" is another famous work by Dazai Osamu. While "No Longer Human" was some depressing quasi-autobiography, this tale is a retelling of an ancient Greek or Roman story, of a shepherd sentenced to die, his beloved friend, and an evil king who distrusts all. The shepherd, Melos, is granted a three-day reprieve to go to his sister's wedding. As collateral to keep him from running away, his friend is held hostage. The king secretly issues Melos an ultimatum: If he returns before sundown of the third day, his friend will be freed. If he is late, the friend dies, but Melos will be forgiven for his crimes. It's an examination of the bonds of friendship, tested by the temptations and weaknesses of the human heart. I haven't read it, so I don't know how it goes. It's read in middle schools, so it can't be that bad, right?

ibbE29nIhSeJ6L.jpg

This isn't a story that's really about overt symbolism (though there is one pair of objects meant to parallel each other across stories), but I feel like the cherry blossoms that seem to be all over the place in this episode always seem to show up when the protagonist is thinking about the past.

This story was put in the hands of Ryosuke Nakamura, who I know from Mouryou no Hako, and who BluWacky knows from the recent film version of Nerawareta Gakuen. Nakamura loves playing with visual symbolism, juggling multiple perspectives and temporal states, and making cerebral anime. And, if the impressions I've read from people who saw Nerawareta Gakuen are anything to go by, he's comfortable playing around with classic stories. This is no exception.

ibuitctkBayama.jpg

I loved the way this shot was laid out. There are three stages to it, but it's inventive in a way that also makes total sense with what's happening.

Nakamura lifts the story one layer back from the ancient tale. Our protagonist is a playwright, Takada, working industriously for hire in Tokyo in 1950. A local theater assigns him the task of adapting the old story to the stage, and he sets to work. But as he sets his pen to the page, as our perspective crosses between him at his desk and the play being produced in his mind's eye (with sets, lighting, and an audience), the story of friendship and tested betrayal dredges up old memories of a friendship he once had in college...

iGS6ei1Jr1Icz.jpg

DTL! DTL!

Nakamura's intercutting dazzles. The story he adds on top, of Takada and his admired actor friend, complements the existing themes of the original, while keeping readers of that story on their toes with a plot whose outcome they can't know. The evil king sits beside Takada in his memories, planting seeds of doubt. The pain of waiting, this kind of waiting, isn't the time lost, but the trust broken. Through music, sound effects, and visual cues, Nakamura keeps the three narrative threads in sync, and commands the viewer's rapt attention. I eagerly await the second half. This is how you breathe new life into an old story.

iTzzlWKMF2eGB.jpg

All the scenes in ancient Greece take place on the stage, and a lot of care is taken to make sure that the sets, and especially the lighting, all correspond to some part of the rigging. It's something I really appreciated. This scene is also a good example of a transition between the narratives being lead with sound before the cut takes place. Stuff like this is pretty basic, and goes a long way towards allowing the viewer to make temporal sense of something that's this disjointed.

As an aside, I was struck when I recognized two different songs from Mouryou no Hako (only one of which I could find online). They're great pieces, but unless they're public domain classical music, it's rare to see songs reused across works.

Sasami-san 2

Better episode, the whole Great Eight-forked Serpent SNS game made the whole episode hilarious with Sasami's constant pursuit of getting in the way and the loser class being all hilarious. They were all...litrally into that scene, lol.

At times hilarious at others dull, couldnt figure out why they were obsessed with the rabbits legs but otherwise the action present was incredible. I want Jin to get some type of abilities but to wholly rely on Izayoi after their boy talk was pleasing.

Tamayura More Aggressive 12 - and thats the end. A rather nice mother daughter moment in that nice epilogue for the season. And again they got me to shed a tear. Such a nice show. And its got me thinking about taking up photography again.

Kino's Journey 10

Well shit.

It became obvious that the three family members were robots when they threw the food away, but I never imagined that the nanny was human. Throughout this entire episode I was waiting for these people to go all Terminator. And wouldn't you know, they did. Just not in the way I expected.

I mean, good lord! Just about the few times I want to see an AI think for itself. But no. Their purpose fulfilled = another sad empty country for Kino to walk by.

All right so judging from the title of the next episode, it seems that I might get a better look into more of Kino's backstory. I'm guessing I'm going to see how she got so good with a gun and all that.

Honestly, I feel like this one image sums up the entire series, the entire franchise, and almost everything that SatoJun does well. Of course, I can also understand why some people might be tired of the same gimmick over and over again, but I love it. It's a nice quiet optimism born out of just being alive that I appreciate. I probably can't be as positive as a SatoJun character, but it's nice to see that someone doesn't think the world is destroying itself. lol

O7Uhvmtl.png

Indeed. I hope there's a final season in a couple of years. Seeing them graduate is, of course, the obvious and perfect place to end the series.

I only wish this show was licensed. Maybe Nozomi will pick it up a few years from now, assuming Aria did reasonably well for them.

B3A8nwWl.jpg

Oh yeah, given that SatoJun did One Off, I'm surprised he had to use a fake Honda logo. At least it looks like it says "Bonda" to me. lol
