From lik-sang's news update on PSP:
That doesn't sound to good. maybe they (lik-sang) is just saying this to justify a porice hike!
Sounds like its gonna be a fierce fight, but if Sony can't get more units out it may not matter! Maybe they should have delayed it a little bit!
And a few other tid bits:
This is gonna be cool (if I get one), sounds like chaos may insue in the land of the rising sun!
Shortage and Chaos
While Sony is preparing huge propaganda and advertising campaigns, it is getting clearer and clearer that the available quantity for launch will be ridiculously low. Insiders in Japan confirm that SCEJ pretends that 200.000 units will be ready for launch, with 100.000 more units reaching the market every week afterwards, bringing the aggregate quantity of units sold before end-year to half a million. The very same contacts who passed this claim to us, all told us right after that they were quite skeptical about these numbers. Professional reporters, they have contacted local retailers to check their facts, and the info they get from the streets is quite different. From their rough calculation, it could even very well be that the market will be limited to even less than that. It is all speculations but worse come to worst, the PSP might turn into a very rare piece of jewelry for rich people and lucky Japanese campers only -- at least during the first few months. Lines will definitely start in front of the shops the day before the release, and the most patient and luckiest people will get themselves a precious.

Advertising Campaign and Propaganda
The buzz has started and Sony is throwing its communication expertise into the battle. Apart from the numerous press releases and interviews about the price point, shortages and alleged explanations for these shortages, the paid advertising campaign has started as well in Tokyo. As with the PlayStation 2 launch, Sony makes sure that the hype is strong enough, despite the shortage. Demand outnumbering demand generates long queues in front of the shops which are quite eye-catchy for the reporters on the ground and leave gamers worldwide with the impression that PSP is too popular and everybody wants it in Japan, when looking at the launch coverage picture. For sure the Nintendo offensive approach with its NDS has forced Sony in making its own strategy more aggressive, using all dirty artifices you are generally more used to witness during presidential campaigns...
A couple of days ago, Sony Computer Entertainment revealed a gigantic replica PSP hanging in the main hall of Tokyo Station, where thousands of commuters will see it as they pass by on their way to the trains each day. You can also find billboards in various Japanese subways featuring final hardware embedded within them. The campaign also includes attractive ladygirls dishing out flyers at relevant subway entrances explaining what the PSP is and what's on the rolling demo. Of course the TV commercials are also going strong at the moment, and we have collected a few links to feeds in download-ready format for you guys:

And a few other tid bits:
On the technical side of things, Sony has announced that the PSP will also be able to go online through mobile phones using IrDA infrared technology, next to the available 802.11b Wireless network. It has also been unveiled by the Japanese giant that its new handheld would be utilizing the XMB user interface already seen in the PSX. MP3 and USB 2.0 are also confirmed to be supported by the system.
