It already sounds like he isn't going to be bothering much with the 3DS version.

I'm getting the feeling a lot of the "pro community" will take this stance in the face of evidence to the contrary. It's pissing me off, why would they rather Sakurai legitimize the Melee techniques/exploits they have used for almost 15 years instead of finding the new ways of being incredible at this game? smh

Finally got home and played the Smash demo! At first it felt kinda awkward on the small 3DS (not LL) and the small stick, but after playing for a bit I got used to it again and it feels quite good. Perhaps still not GC-controller level, but not bad either.

Is this post serious? I think some will just wait for the Wii U release if they skip the 3DS one due to lack of GC controller. Still, most of the pro community seems to be open to trying either version out and finding new tech.

I've said before, but the game being competitively viable and Melee pros not liking it are not necessarily mutually exclusive scenarios.

The key phrase there is "3DS version".

I'm pretty sure most of the competitive community don't give a shit about the 3DS version for competitive play, I know I don't.

It's all about that WiiU version with a comfortable controller.

I don't know, I'm hearing nothing but good things about the 3DS demo coming from pro-players thus far

I wonder if Nintendo will try to push Smash 4 for EVO.
Probably. I do wonder if both Melee and Smash 4 will both be there as official tourneys or if Melee will just be a side event

Meant if that post was serious, since I agree, everything seems mostly positive.

Apparently Megaman can Ken combo and yet Marth can't.

Thanks sakurai.

Marth isn't even in the demo, we don't really know what he can do yet.

Some big negativity about this game that hasn't even been released from "pro" players all over the place the past few days. Give it some time, guys.

Smash 4 for wiiu will be at evo next year for sure, maybe a smash 4 for 3ds side tournament. If Nintendo sponsors again I doubt we'll see melee in any official capacity

The public japanese demo had Marth playable in it, he can't Ken combo.

Masked Man

I said wow
Finally downloaded the demo! Been flipping through the Smash Facts section for random info (and to enjoy the nice café style version of the main theme):
  • On the Paper Mario stage, players will become easier to launch to the right while the fan is blowing.
  • On the S.S. Flavion section, an enormous Blooper will appear. It won't attack the players, but it will create enormous waves to rock the boat.
  • The enormous Bowser head on the airship portion will occasionally rotate. Before it spins, the eyes will glow red, so be careful.
  • On the Find Mii stage, the Dark Lord (or whatever) will occasionally destroy one of the two platforms, leaving players with only one place to fight.
  • When the Dark Lord casts magic on players, the effects will be displayed on the bottom screen.
  • The spiky pillars in the 3D Land stage appear randomly and destroy any platforms they touch. Players who touch the pillars will incur great damage.
  • When players collect 100 coins on the NSMB2 stage, they will turn to golden fighters. Once golden, players will become stronger and more difficult to launch.
  • There are four different platform layouts in Arena Ferox, and some portions can be destroyed.
  • On the Tortimer Island stage, sometimes a beehive will appear from the trees on the island. Attacking the hive will cause the bees inside to come after you.
  • Dunno if it's been confirmed already, but Saki Amamiya is back as an Assist Trophy.

Also what is the point of the leaf shield other than to be a reference?

It's awful, slow, does barely any damage, stops you from using any other moves and is just all around worse than every other projectile he has.

I'm sure not every player in the "pro" community feels that way, maybe not even the majority of them. To be fair (and to my honest surprise), many of the highest-profile people in the community seem to really be taking to Smash 3DS/Wii U and appear willing to give it a fair shake against (or alongside) Melee. Even the impressions from "pro" players playing the 3DS version tonight seemed to be pretty much overwhelmingly positive. It's nice to see and I'm very, very happy to be wrong compared to my initial expectations.

But yeah, there are always going to be those obnoxious "Melee or nothing" people, and you can't really do anything about them. Best to just ignore them and let them keep limiting their own horizons. More for the rest of us, right?

Game's mechanics, balance and everything will be the same for both versions. Of course it will be better to play it on wiiU but both games will play the same. So, as far as competitive aspects of the game goes, we can already know if the game will be tournament viable with this 3ds version

And I bet there will be 3DS tournaments as soon as the game drops in NA

And?

We still don't know what he can do yet. Arbitrarily demanding characters do X thing or whatever is pretty pointless.

People need real hands-on time in an environment where they can test things to learn anything about these characters. Public demos aren't any good for that.

Y'all need to chill the fuck out and wait until a week or two from now when people have actually had the time to start to learn how this game works.

But yeah, there are always going to be those obnoxious "Melee or nothing" people, and you can't really do anything about them. Best to just ignore them and let them keep limiting their own horizons. More for the rest of us, right?

Yeah I should probably not even bother responding to these kind of people, I doubt there's anything positive they'll listen to at all. They've already decided it's Melee or nothin', and I guess they'll be happy with nothin'.

Maturity, bitches.
I hope everyone moves away from the 3DS version so then I can be champion without even trying.

I wonder if Nintendo will try to push Smash 4 for EVO.

I hope so! It'd be really disappointing to have this awesome new Smash game come out, only to have things fall back to Melee for Evo. I'd like to see both, really - a Smash Wii U main event and a Melee side event, kind of like how they do a Street Fighter IV main event and a Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix side event!

Thanks for watching, everybody.

It was an EXCELLENT stream! Thanks for hosting it!

A question regarding this game popped up in my head:

Since it's a collaboration between Nintendo and Namco, how are they splitting dev costs and earnings? I can't see Namco just giving Nintendo the people, even if they are paying for them during that time, while I can't see Nintendo giving them a % of the earnings.

How did they come to terms?

I think once the Wii U version comes out, we'll see 3DS version competitive-level play drop off pretty sharply as people migrate to something that's more tournament, stream, and controller-friendly. It's a pretty natural progression.

But I'm sure there's going to continue to be a very healthy multiplayer crowd for the 3DS version even after that happens, due to the sheer number of 3DS systems out there compared to how many Wii U consoles exist.

This is all business stuff that we'll probably never know. Nintendo's never been open about that kind of thing in the past, I doubt they'll want to sate anyone's curiosity now.

i don't care much about what Melee pros think about the game, i've already played enough to know that i will like it a lot but having a great competitive would be cool.

Nintendo gave sakurai 5 loaves of bread and two fish and... SOMEHOW..sakurai fed every single employee with it. And they were all satisfied.

I am really happy impressions are good.

A part of me doesn't want the demo, just give me the full title!

Happy Birthday Ash! :D

Man, Mario's combo game is real. Haven't had this much fun using Mario outside of Project M. I'm actually pretty hyped to see if Dr. Mario has comparable silliness, and this is coming frim someone who was rather sour about him coming back.

No, I don't expect them to neither, but perhaps this isn't an uncommon thing in the industry. I can see them handle this kind of stuff easily for games that sell 1 - 2 millions tops or are outsourced to Indie developers.

But how would you do this with a major publisher and one of biggest sellers for the console?

I don't think Nintendo is cheap when it comes to developing two games in one of its biggest franchises that are system sellers, but I don't expect them to be too generous either.
And Namco could use this team to develop something internally - say Tekken x SF - that could easily make them more money than contract work.

That does NOT look remotely intentional, though since it's not an offensive move I'm not sure how bad an exploit it is beyond breaking up a lot of potential combo's. At least patching is a thing now, though I imagine it'll take awhile to get addressed if it's the only odd thing out.

Game is looking fantastic otherwise, really pleased with how quickly veterans are gelling with it.

Unless Dr. Mario has Melee Mario/Dr. Mario's moves restored*, I think after seeing how much improved Mario is in SSB4 he's even more unneccessary, but whatever. Is there any particular area Mario in SSB4's lacking in so far Doc back in Melee made up for?

*I find it telling people are still avoiding FLUDD like the plague in the demo streams.
