Fuck it, if Dark Pit gets to be a separate character, I want Dark Link, complete with creepy Water Temple stage:

What about the people who played and adored Uprising yet still think that Dark Pit was a bad idea? I really liked DP in Uprising because he was a fun subversion of the usual Dark clone character, but that doesn't mean that I actually want him as separate clone character in Smash.

Don;t think that Pokemon trainer appears during Charizard's PT. So far only saw XY (both male & female) Trainer as trophy
Dissapointment. :( Oh well, Serena is pretty cool.
So does Metal Face show up as a boss or hazard on Guar Plains or is that WiiU only? What stages besides Mega Man's even have bosses?
Find Mii has a boss.
So assuming Isaac is truly cut from the assist trophy list and isn't even a regular trophy, can someone explain the logic of keeping Saki from Sin & Punishment as an assist but not Isaac?
Sakurai has said before that he really likes Saki.

Fuck it, I'm just gonna put it out there:

(And I'm not saying this to troll fans or keep the hype up or whatever.)

I have a source who has been right about previous leaks and has worked on the European localization of the game. He says he has definitely seen moving models of Dixie, Ridley, Chorus Men and Mewtwo in the game and he's still confident that these four characters can be unlocked by linking the 3DS version to the Wii U version.

Now, I know how outlandish this sounds, and being a game journalist myself I'm taking this with a grain of salt myself, but we're talking about the guy who told me about the Bowser Jr. alts immediately after the ESRB leaks and has never been wrong about other stuff as well. Plus, the whole connectivity thing makes far too much sense, if only to get fans to buy both versions. *insert itprintsmoney.gif here*

Again, I swear on my soul that I'm not trolling. Time will tell. I thought Ridley was never gonna be in, but hey.

Shofu stream started and they're talking about stuff. Was it confirmed that one of Ness' custom moves is PK Freeze? They said they saw someone mention it.

What if he was a subversion of Smash clones :p

Oh, I was wondering if my exchange with Aeana would make it into the thread...

Anyway, I found some video of Magicant and it looks glorious! It almost makes up for the other re-used stages on its own. I really like the F-Zero, Gaur Plains, and Magicant stages.

I love the Kid Icarus franchise, especially the original, but I would rather have a real Ganondorf than Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, and Lucina.

Okay... but how do those two things have literally even one thing to do with one another? I'd like to have a non-clone Ganondorf too, but that has literally nothing to do with clones from other series.

Of course there are going to be people out there who have that opinion, and that's fine and totally valid. But I still suspect a lot of people on the Dark Pit hate train don't have context for the character and just see an evil-looking Pit and go "THAT'S STUPID, SAKURAI BIAS CONFIRMED FUCK YEAH DOC IS BACK, BEST CLONE EVER!"

Wish there was a tourney feature on the 3DS so I could organize a tournament where everyone uses Bowser Jr. or one of the seven Koopalings and every match takes place on SNES F-Zero.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
So, which of the newcomers do you guys think will NOT make it to the next game?

I can see Sakurai perhaps pulling out Dark Pit if Kid Icarus doesn't get any sequels.

Pokemon's really sped up their release too...a few years ago, maybe one generation would really come out when Smash was being developed, now we'll probably have Gen VII and Gen VIII out for a decent amount of time for Smash 5. So I think Greninja might be gone, unless they keep him relevant like Lucario.

I can't help but laugh at all these people being so salty about Dark Pit while they hype up Dr. Mario and lament Wolf's being cut in the same breath. Dr. Mario is literally Mario wearing a doctor's coat and is an actual, literal clone in every sense of the word. Dr. Mario is just getting a dumb pass because of his Melee alumni status and people are simply salty about Dark Pit in the exact same way they were salty about Wolf in Brawl.
But Dr. Mario at least allows one to play as a Mario-type without FLUDD for those who don't like it, on top of having a different model. If Dark Pit had a different weapon/moves as well then I wouldn't be as bummed.

Nice. I'm intrigued!

Because Dark Pit is a great, sympathetic character and I suspect most (not all) of the people who are so salty about him have not played Kid Icarus: Uprising or didn't like it. He's really cool in Uprising and it's made very clear that he's much more than just a mirror image of Pit.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I don't know exactly what Dark Pit's FS is, but I read that it utilizes his staff.
To be fair, FLUDD is really, really situational and sort of pointless. A chance to play as Mario without it is more than welcome, though I'd just have preferred they scrapped the damn thing.

I agree Dark Pit is really likable in Uprising and I'm totally cool with him being in Smash. I just think without the vet cuts he wouldn't stick out as much, or at least if Lucas and Wolf were still around.

I'm happy with the characters we're getting, the rooster would be perfect if there were no clones.

This logic makes no sense to me. You're saying the roster would be better if the extra characters were not included? How does the addition of extra characters who required fewer resources to put together and add just a little more variety to an already massive roster of favorites actively diminish the quality of the existing roster?

To me it's like saying that an entire breakfast is ruined because you got an extra piece of bacon on your plate.

Can we talk about how Sassy Ganondorf has become?

M1IsvA6.png

Right? That new weave he got in Hyrule Warriors has changed him and I like it. I haven't seen any gameplay of him but if he's just how he was in Brawl I'm not really pressed since I used him a lot and enjoyed using him.

I'm super happy with the roster. A lot of characters I wanted to see this time made the cut; Villager, Palutena, Pac-Man, Bowser Jr., Mac, Robin. I'm just happy a lot of the new characters have something which makes them stand out and I think all of them are great additions. The only character I'm bummed out on is Dark Pit since it's kinda like "Why not?" since he'll make some people happy and he's fairly easy to beef up the roster, but I don't remember him having any standout moments in Uprising beside being the sulky "Shadow" character and being affectionately called Pittoo by Palutena. If all his moves incorporated another weapon set from the game that would've been awesome but oh well.

Otherwise, I'm actually happy to see the Doc back since I love his home series despite him being unchanged. Also, I was skeptical of the Duck Hunt concept but from the little gameplay I've seen I am so happy he made an appearance. I'm quite sad to see the 'Climbers go, but he keeps their spot warm for them quite nicely until next time. He's adorable, and had we not had it leaked beforehand, his inclusion would've been an awesome surprise for older fans.

I've got to say I'm a little disappointed Dixie Kong didn't appear this time since she seemed like a no brainer this time around with her reappearance in TF and the fact Sora were looking to include more females this time around, but again, there's always next time. I already got a load of awesome characters to learn to play as already.

All I'm waiting on now are the trophies of the characters I wanted to see in the roster. We already saw Krystal's and I was a little underwhelmed since they pulled the model from Assault again, but if I see some of the characters people wanted as trophies it'll help quell people's insatiable need for more as portrayed in those hilarious Smashboards posts.

I thought he had a couple of different things? Apart from the FS, I mean.

Will laugh if they announce a Day 1 patch tomorrow that includes more ATs/Pokemon/character/stages. I mean, it's not going to happen. But I'd laugh.

He didn't say anything about a roster. He's talking about the rooster. Kappa

Wow, and WE'RE the basement dwelling trolls? LOL okay, surrrrre.

I really want to see DHD-style Ridley now (aka based on the NES version with homages to Metroid NES), but I really don't think Ridley is anywhere near a required character.

As I've said before, I think Sakurai has it tough. He's said before that it's all about doing the characters justice and making them feel like they're actually from their games. "lol Falcondorf" I hear you mutter. Well yeah, really dumb that Sakurai hasn't fixed that yet. But it REALLY doesn't help that the Metroid series is its own worst enemy as far as mythos and material for Smash goes. The series has ONLY been about Samus and the villains she fight are huge. "B-but the Melee intro" , "Bowser's big too! And he's shrunk for Smash" Nope, false equivalency. Honestly Ridley is in this terrible position where I think regardless of what Sakurai does with him it won't be done "right" in the eyes of most fans. Let's look at the options

Sakurai makes Ridley a Charizard clone: "Argh, I want Ridley done JUSTICE. It's Falcondorf all over again!"
Sakurai puts him in close to accurate size and attempts to balance him "Ridley's too powerful/weak. Sakurai fails again!"

Keeping him as an unplayable boss character is the right call. He's perfectly portrayed and done justice to his games, and that's what Sakurai wants most of all. It's like wanting Galactus playable in the next MvC. How the hell do you expect them to do that.

So, basically, I'm not disappointed with this roster at all. In fact, I think it's better than what we got in Brawl. Why do I think this? I can explain it easily.

Many of the newcomers (excluding the two clones, Lucina and Dark Pit) take a page out of traditional fighting game characters. Rosalina & Luma fills the role of a puppet character, for example. This is really cool and important to notice because in every Smash game up to this point it never seemed like these characters were properly designed. As in, the characters were just given moves that would suit the character rather than the character being designed in-tandem with the moves. I'm not saying that every character in Smash isn't designed at all -- I mean, characters like Ice Climbers were designed a certain way for sure from their conceptualization. But some characters, like, just don't have this distinct feeling about them like some of these newcomers do.

Like, in the previous Smash games, there isn't really a character that was purposefully designed with projectiles in mind. Instead, you have characters that have projectiles but they aren't a focus of the character. I guess that's more of what I mean -- the characters in Smash aren't always designed with a focus in mind. And in some ways, this is what's really beneficial to Smash because it means you can play a character any way you want to and that's been a big thing about why the series has taken off as a competitive title for a lot of people. BUT having the focus for a particular character is a great way to make them distinguishable from the other characters in the game and I feel that's what Smash has been missing with its newcomers until this game.

While Little Mac might seem like a typical newcomer he really isn't. He's purposefully designed to be a ground-based fighter. That's his focus. Every other Smash character can play both on the air and on the ground but Little Mac actually has terrible aerial moves -- they actually designed him that way. When I saw that, I was surprised because I didn't believe Sakurai when he said Little Mac would be weak in the air. I thought when he said that he only meant recovery-wise and that Mac would at least have one decent aerial but from what we've seen since E3, none of his aerials are good. This means every Little Mac, for the most part, will have to play with a focus on the ground game because that's his design -- he was designed to be a character that fights on the ground.

And that's just one example. I could go into how Robin is what a ranged character in Smash should have been from the start or how Mega Man is going to have to control space with all his projectiles at his disposal (so in fighting game terms, probably a more zoning-based character in Smash) and how Shulk is a stance character which means every Shulk main is going to have to learn to use those stances to their advantage if they want to be good with him etc etc.

All the new characters, for the most part, are designed so well that it makes me want to try all of them at least once. In Brawl, I don't think I tried every newcomer once when I unlocked them. I think I gravitated more towards who I liked or was interested in (in this case, Wolf, Wario, Diddy Kong, etc.) and I never tried someone like ROB because not only was the character not exciting but neither was the accompanying move set. (Didn't help that he wasn't designed around the move set he had like every other Smash newcomer in Brawl).

I just feel that this set of newcomers is more distinguishable than any of the other sets of newcomers and that's what makes the roster actually exciting for me. It's a good roster not because of who the characters are, but... because of how they are designed and how they look like they'll play so far. Hell, Bowser Jr. is even exciting looking to play and I was initially not really interested in seeing him in the games -- but because of the clown car and his mech projectiles and stuff he looks like he'll be a very awesome and unique character in general.

That's pretty much what I think of the roster. Outside of that, I'm super pumped we got Doc specifically because of the Down B Tornado and drill kick Dair. Superior Mario is back. :p

I'm not a hardcore fighting game fan, more of a casual player and fan of things like Marvel and KoF, but you really hit the nail on the head. Looking back, you're exactly right, the only characters I really had fun playing with were Ike, Dedede, and Snake, and even then, there wasn't anything really special about them (Snake would probably be the closest) But here you've got a really nice variety all around.

My only disappointment here is I was really hoping for some new Zelda reps and Ganondorf getting a proper moveset this time. Takamaru would've been cool too, but maybe they're still holding off on his "Uprising" Reboot/Sequel and it'll happen next time.

New topic: Who do you want in the next Smash Bros.

Yes, it's hella early, but somebody has to bite the bullet and ask it. Or should the question be saved for when the DLC is confirmed?

I'll bite. This is going to be ignoring cut veterans because I'd hope as many of them could return as possible.

Anyway, Mario is repped pretty well at this point, the only addition I can see there is Captain Toad. Same goes for Zelda, the only rep I can see being added there is some sort of riff on Ganondorf, whether as Toon Ganondorf of Ganon with trident or something else.

I also think we'd be due for a new DK character, whether it's Dixie or K. Rool, but I don't see anyone outside of those 2 getting in. As for Wario, I think the WarioWare series has a ton of great characters that could make interesting fighters. I'd like to see either Jimmy T, Ashley, or Mona.

As for Metroid, Ridley is always the most wanted, but I think as long as Sakurai is directing these games, he won't be in as a fighter. Sakurai just seems to think Ridley is a better fit as a boss. I don't see a new Kid Icarus character happening, even though Medusa would be cool and a better rep than Dark Pit, haha. Fire Emblem has good representation currently, and I don't see the need for a new rep unless a new game with new characters comes out. And as for Kirby, that series representation is pretty much perfect right now, I don't see the need for characters such as Bandana Dee.

Star Fox, if it gets a new rep, would get Krystal, I guess, but I'd prefer to see Wolf return. F-Zero probably won't see a new rep, and Mother probably won't either, though I'd be interested in seeing Claus (if Lucas was added back).

Pokemon would definitely get a new rep, but it's just way too early to even guess who that would be.

So then what new series would be added? If Rhythm Heaven doesn't get a DLC character, they seem to be a safe bet for the next games. Everyone has responded well to the Splatoon characters, so we may see them if that game takes off. Perhaps a Project STEAM rep as well? Again, that depends on the response to that game.

Other than those three, some sort of retro rep is to be expected, but with Duck Hunt now in the game, we're reaching the bottom of the barrel for those. But Sakurai is a big fan of Panel de Pon, so maybe it will finally be Lip's time to shine. Much like Little Mac this time, I'd also expect one series with only AT representation to get a full character this time. I'd bet on Advance Wars, but maybe it would be Golden Sun. As for what character could join that would be really out there, a la Wii Fit Trainer? That's always impossible to guess. Maybe a Style Savvy rep? Who would even be expecting that?!

So looking at what I've written I'd expect 6 new reps to existing franchises and 6 reps to new franchises. 12 reps may not seem like a lot, but at this point the roster is pretty solid. Adding 12 reps and bringing the cut veterans back would pretty much make the next gen Smash perfect. And I wrote WAY too much about this, haha.

No, our difference is that I accept characters on their own merits instead of worrying about the extremely subjective issue of who is more deserving. I just don't understand how someone can't like ANY of the newcomers unless it's just a matter of being unfamiliar with them. But to me, I like being unfamiliar with some characters because it gives me an opportunity to learn about new games and series

Oh, I'm familiar with every newcomer.

Villager: I'm an Animal Crossing fan, but I never wanted him/her n Smash, and I just found him/her to be boring when I tried him during E3.
Mega Man & Pacman: I love Pac-Man and the Mega Man series, but I've never been too fond of 3rd part characters in Smash.
Rosalina & Bowser Jr: I like them both, but every Mario Newcomer that isn't Vivian or Birdo makes me sad.
Robin & Lucina: I hate Awakening
Greninja: I like X/Y but I think he's the worst starter in that game and would have greatly preferred Fennekin or Chesnaught
Palutena & Mii Fighters: I like Palutena in Uprising, but both of their gimmicks (custom moves) are something I couldn't care less about.
Little Mac: He's pretty cool.
Wii Fit Trainer: A decent starter WTF character like the Ice Climbers in Melee, but I think Bubbles from Clu Clu Land would have fit the role better.
Shulk: Xenoblade is awesome, but I would have preferred almost any other party member over him. the only worse Xenoblade choice would have been Sharla IMO.
Dark Pit: I used to hate him, but he seems different enough that I'm now indifferent to him until I get a chance to try him out for myself.

I thought he had a couple of different things? Apart from the FS, I mean.

I think they're just slight variations of the same attacks.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
Fuck, I really wanted Dark Metroid to be playable. He deserves it more then Dark Pit.

I played Uprising and I get that Dark Pit is his own character, but that doesn't make him suited to be playable when he is literally a recolor. I'm not happy about Dr. Mario either, nor am I at all upset about Wolf's cut. I just don't think Dark Pit should've been given the title of playable character, and I'm completely confused as to Sakurai's logic when making Dark Pit, Lucina, and Dr. Mario their own characters while maintaining Alph as an alternate costume.

Well if you want to believe the Mewtwo/Chorus Men/Dixie/Ridley thing adding those 4 into the roster would give us an even 9 x 6, if you also made Alph a full on clone you'd break that.

I absolutely love this roster. I'm sad there's no Chorus Kids and that Lucas has been cut, but everything else is absolutely fantastic! Shulk in Smash?! Whaa~! Amazing. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game

I played Uprising too, and I don't think Dark Pit is all that special. It's nice that he's not just literally a mute Pit shadow that fights you once or whatever. But just being a separate person doesn't mean you should be in Smash Bros. Waluigi is also not Pit, that doesn't mean he tried hard enough.

Still, I'd rather have Dark Pit than not. I kinda like him. More characters to try is cool. And in a few months, I won't care who's represented in the game or who does(n't) deserve it or whatever, I'll just be excited to learn the ins and outs and get better at it.

... I don't believe that. At all.
I also don't think Alph should be a playable character, but I think Alph is certainly a much more viable candidate (second rep for a three game series; uses Rock Pikmin among other things) than Dark Pit (literal recolor and third rep for a three game series; uses modified attacks and different FS).

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Okay... but how do those two things have literally even one thing to do with one another? I'd like to have a non-clone Ganondorf too, but that has literally nothing to do with clones from other series.

Because Sakurai has mentioned in the past that clone characters exist to fill out the roster. He has stated that he could create three clone characters in the time it would take for him to make a new one. I'm saying that I would have rather had Sakurai choose to make a slightly smaller roster with more unique fighters than a slightly bigger roster with more clones.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of any character honestly. There's nobody I'd just hate to see disappointed since I want as many play styles as possible.

Also, here's Ganondorf
