I played Uprising and I get that Dark Pit is his own character, but that doesn't make him suited to be playable when he is literally a recolor. I'm not happy about Dr. Mario either, nor am I at all upset about Wolf's cut. I just don't think Dark Pit should've been given the title of playable character, and I'm completely confused as to Sakurai's logic when making Dark Pit, Lucina, and Dr. Mario their own characters while maintaining Alph as an alternate costume.

I do agree with you there. The conditions that seem to grant a character their own slot on the roster vs. being an alt like Alph and the Koopalings seem to be very... fluid and nonsensical. It's very strange. I don't see how Dr. Mario couldn't have just been an alt for Mario, other than the removal of the FLUDD (and even then, what DID stop them from doing that)? But I guess that does satisfy Sakurai's condition that if a character differs mechanically even slightly, they get their own slot on the roster. Replacing the FLUDD with the Dr. Tornado (that's what it was called, right?) is a pretty big difference. But yeah, the clone/alt/custom specials discrepancy is all a bit bonkers.

To be fair, FLUDD is really, really situational and sort of pointless. A chance to play as Mario without it is more than welcome, though I'd just have preferred they scrapped the damn thing.

I agree Dark Pit is really likable in Uprising and I'm totally cool with him being in Smash. I just think without the vet cuts he wouldn't stick out as much, or at least if Lucas and Wolf were still around.

But Dr. Mario at least allows one to play as a Mario-type without FLUDD for those who don't like it, on top of having a different model. If Dark Pit had a different weapon/moves as well then I wouldn't be as bummed.

I do agree that the FLUDD is a terrible, pointless move, and even with Mario being my third-best in Brawl I never, ever used it. But then, why make Doc a separate character solely for the purpose of removing it? Make the Mario Tornado one of Mario's down B alts and call it a day. Less effort and no need for the return of an otherwise pointless clone. It's just strange.

Because Dark Pit is a great, sympathetic character and I suspect most (not all) of the people who are so salty about him have not played Kid Icarus: Uprising or didn't like it. He's really cool in Uprising and it's made very clear that he's much more than just a mirror image of Pit.

I love Uprising. I rather have Medusa as a clone of Palutena than Dark Pit.

Because Sakurai has mentioned in the past that clone characters exist to fill out the roster. He has stated that he could create three clone characters in the time it would take for him to make a new one. I'm saying that I would have rather had Sakurai choose to make a slightly smaller roster with more unique fighters than a slightly bigger roster with more clones.

I'm pretty sure it was six, not three. IIRC Sakurai said that in the time it took to make all of the Melee clones (Ganondorf, Dr. Mario, Pichu, Young Link, Roy, and Falco) that they could have made a unique character.

Lol, I'm rewatching the Yushako stream and I can't get over how he lost to Jigglypuff 2 times trying to unlock her, my Jigglypuff, her power <333333 I'm so thankful she's back.

Looking at the roster for what it is, and not fretting over what it's not, the lineup is simply incredible. Greninja is one of my MVPs in X/Y, so it's wonderful to see him here. Palutena is probably my favorite female Nintendo character. Robin and Lucina are so much more interesting than Chrom, so they're a dream-come-true scenario. Shulk looks so amazing that I'm now 35 hours into my playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles and loving every second. Little Mac is an amazing risk-reward character; Rosalina & Luma is a briliant concept; and Villager and Wii Fit Trainer both embody their franchises in clever ways. The Mii Fighters are way more entertaining than anyone ever anticipated. Mega Man and Pac-Man are pitch-perfect. And now we have Duck Hunt, representing the NES Zapper games, and Bowser Jr. + the Koopalings, my favorite newcomers yet, which combine mind-boggling fan service with an inspired mobile suit setup. And Dark Pit is now growing on me, thanks to the new visual flourishes on his arrows, side special, etc. All of this, and so many wonderful returning veterans, all nicely retooled in various ways. The roster is so good!!

I can't help but laugh at all these people being so salty about Dark Pit while they hype up Dr. Mario and lament Wolf's being cut in the same breath. Dr. Mario is literally Mario wearing a doctor's coat and is an actual, literal clone in every sense of the word. Dr. Mario is just getting a dumb pass because of his Melee alumni status and people are simply salty about Dark Pit in the exact same way they were salty about Wolf in Brawl. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I don't know exactly what Dark Pit's FS is, but I read that it utilizes his staff.

While I'm not really on either side of the fence in regards to Dark Pit, I can understand people not liking him. The thing with Dr. Mario is not only that he's a returning previously cut character (which by proxy means that all characters that got axed have a chance to actually make it into future installments), but he's also a return to a pre-Brawl Mario who doesn't use the FLUDD, which was the most controversial change to Mario's moveset. Additionally, Dr. Mario actually LOOKS different. Dark Pit is literally Pit with black clothes/wings. It'll be super hard to differentiate him from regular Pit (especially if they share several animations, which afaik they do). It's nowhere near the same with Doc, whose model changes.

Also, I'm particularly sour at you pissing at Wolf and acting like he's the cloniest shit in the world. Wolf is not a clone. Wolf looks entirely different from Fox. Wolf moves entirely different from Fox. Wolf's entire normal moveset is entirely different from Fox, to the point where both of them use entirely different limbs for like 90% of their moves. Wolf's specials, while loosely based on Fox's, work entirely different from Fox's, in their looks and their effects. The only thing Wolf has that is an actual direct copy off of Fox's moveset is the Final Smash.
I've brought the comparison up often, and will do so again: Calling Wolf a clone of Fox is akin to saying that Ryu is a clone of Chun-Li. Both share similar special moves (a fireball, a rising punch/kick, and a spinning kick), but their moves and movement is entirely different. Nobody would even dare call Chun-Li a clone of Ryu, because that's dumb - they're obviously not clones even though their special moves are similar. So why is it that Wolf constantly gets thrown in with Dr. Mario, Roy and whomever else?

I think the strongest argument to be made for the possibility of DLC isn't that Sakurai has entertained the possibility or that the leak suggested more characters are in the game or that MK8 is getting a pretty robust DLC treatment, but that Lucas isn't in the game at all despite Sakurai showing a willingness to include characters as alts. The most analogous scenario is Alph being included with Olimar, but Bowser Jr also applies here and, if anything, shows how far Sakurai is willing to go with it.

With that in mind, I find it hard to believe that he would completely do away with Lucas rather than put in the menial effort to at least make him a Ness re-skin unless he had plans to reinstate him as his own character later on as DLC.

Both Lucas and Wolf were my mains in Brawl, (I tried to main Falcon, but he just wasn't as good) so maybe I'm being overly optimistic. I'd like to hear a sound argument for why Sakurai would scrap him entirely rather than give him an Alph-like treatment.

I'd assume that's why until they maybe figure it out later, but now it's just speculation

It was probably just budgeting. They had a limited amount of characters to make clones, and Dark Pit was one of the ones they chose.

I think it makes more sense for Dark Pit to be his own character, rather than Alph. Dark Pit' may look exactly like Pit, but his characterization is quite the opposite, and from that it's pretty easy to extrapolate a sense of weight/movement that "suits" him in a way that it wouldn't fit Pit.

Alph's problem lies in the fact that his attitude and demeanor aren't that far seperated from Olimar, and since most of his moveset revolve around the pikmin, which don't change in any way, they felt it was enough to leave him as an alt costume. They could have added Rock Pikmin, but I suspect Rock Pikmin are involved in Olimar's custom moveset, so Alph would get them anyways.

Really it just comes down to having limited time and options. They wanted some clones, Dark Pit was easier to give an "identity" to than Alph, and so they made a judgement call.

Well, Alph does use Rock Pikmin, which act differently from all other Pikmin types (bounce off enemies but do lots of damage) and I'm sure they could've thought of more things to differentiate him from Olimar.
Mostly I'm upset that Pit + Dark Pit together make sixteen different colors for essentially the same character, while Olimar has to share his eight with Alph and loses two of his Brawl colors. I wouldn't be nearly as upset if both he and Alph had eight.
I liked Dark Pit in Uprising, I thought it was nice that this wasn't just another "evil shadow" - then again, Dark Samus from the Prime is also not another "evil shadow" and very easily could've been distinguished from Samus with a moveset (and would've given Metroid a deserved third rep).
I just wish Sakurai was consistent with what does and does not make a character an alternate costume.

Anyway, I found some video of Magicant and it looks glorious! It almost makes up for the other re-used stages on its own. I really like the F-Zero, Gaur Plains, and Magicant stages.

Someone linked me to her twitter, To be honest, I felt that it wasn't improper for someone with moderator status would actually considering to do "experiment" with audiences by soft-deleting someone's hard works. Yeah, I know what it meant but it's still disrespect to other people's works. Xane worked pretty hard on the graphic works for the OT.
