Just heard about a second shooting on police officers that may or may not be connected (copycat?), one female cop gravely injured :( hope she pulls through.

This is awful.

The previous poster is attempting to shed a fairer light on the subject.

It is not the case that every Muslim gets offended by portrayals of Muhammed, nor does every Muslim scholar believe mocking should equal to a death sentence.

If you wish to persist on this road, you may have to explain why the majority of Muslims don't take up arms against every offence laid upon their prophet.

I don't think I should have to explain that ∃x P(x) ≠ ∀x P(x)

The policewoman is dead, according to Le Figaro :(

What in the world is happening? Bad enough that there as attack on the magazine now attacks are happening elsewhere?

Considering that there were three attempts in Sweden last week to burn Mosques I'm not surprised that attacks like those happened.

BBC News said:
Regarding the explosion in Villefranche-sur-Saone, near Lyon, the town's deputy mayor Bernard Perrut says: "It is apparently linked to the dramatic situation [in Paris]. The restaurant is independently managed by people close to the mosque... and is where people attending the mosque gather, as do others."

.

I'm having a hard time following all the stuff that is happening right now:
- In Montrouge (south Parisian suburb), a policewoman checking on a traffic accident was shot dead by a heavily armed suspect, who is still on the loose. She was just confirmed dead.
- Near Lyon this morning, there was an explosion in a kebab restaurant near a mosque.
- Near Le Mans last night a grenade exploded at a mosque, while three were left undetonated.

Is this right?

Man, this is all so fucked up.

Edit because it always bears saying it: my thoughts and condolences go to the policewoman and her family and friends.

Just woke up, can anyone recap what happened last night/ this morning?

A second shooting happened earlier today, south of Paris. A policewoman involved in the shooting has reportedly died.

A police officer and a street sweeper were shot and gravely wounded at the southern edge of Paris on Thursday, raising tensions a day after masked gunmen stormed the offices of a satirical newspaper and killed 12 people.

The attacker in the pre-dawn shooting Thursday remained at large, said French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. He cautioned against jumping to any conclusions about the attack, which has not been linked to the assault on the newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which left two police officers among the dead.

In the Thursday shooting, he said the officer had stopped to investigate a traffic accident when the firing started. Paris police said the second victim was a street sweeper.

“There was an officer in front of a white car and a man running away who shot,” said Ahmed Sassi, who saw the shooting from his home nearby. He said the shooter wore dark clothes but no mask. “It didn’t look like a big gun because he held it with one hand,” Sassi said.

After the attack the perpetrators fled, switching and hijacking vehicles. Someone turned himself in but it turned out because he had the same name as one of the attackers and wanted to clear himself. There were other attacks on police though it's unknown if they're related to this case or not. Some people seem to also have decided to retaliate by attacking mosques.

Apparently a municipal worker (not sure what kind, street sweeper or garbage man?) was also shot, when the police woman got shot, from what I have read.

Also there have been "several attacks" against mosques in France, since yesterday.

There is not formal suspicion [is that the correct term?] against the 18-year old who handed himself over after seeing his name in the media/social media.

if French non-muslims want to further show their support of the wrongfully targeted muslim country-men & -women, they can do as the Swedish did back in December:

The sad truth is, there are many people out there that honestly judge a whole religion based on some psychotic extremists' separate actions. It's a shame that ignorance is so easy to accept.

I think what really breaks my heart is that 12 people today are victims of the kind of event that we all thought wouldn't happen. I too thought it was a joke when extremists threatened South Park for showing the Prophet Mohammed and thought no serious action/retaliation would ever occur because of cartoons/satire.

That's what I said in the last thread. All something like this does is make people from various cultures not trust each other and spreads xenophobia. If it wasn't for people who twist religion to benefit and support their sick and twisted views and lives I doubt us as a species would have very many problems co-existing peacefully together at all. I hate extremists and everything they do.

Also RIP to the people who died today. They died, because other people just as bad as the extremists use revenge and retaliation to incite more hatred against people who had nothing to do with what happened. Just awful, I can't imagine what it must feel like to be members of those poor people who have passed aways families, especially this close to the new year.

But France strongly opposed the invasion of Iraq??

The government of Germany "strongly opposed" it as well.

However that was simply a fake for the public, simply because the public was strongly against it. They actually supported it (AWACS and crap) directly. And they supported it indirectly as well. Almost all of the US military crap back then and nowadays is coordinated (including uncle Obama's drone strikes) from within Germany. Without Germany US couldn't have done as much shit as they have done in the last 15 years.

Austria + Switzerland for example were the only countries, that actually denied US + UK overflight rights back then. That's not that much, but at least something.

France on the other hand actually granted overflight rights. And France was and is of course involved in Afghanistan including plenty of other countries.

But right, it probably would have made "more sense" to do some shit like this in Germany. I mean not that it makes sense.

I don't use english as I would like in order to expresse how deep this stupid act of barbarism has touched me. I am literally crying tears right now.

Those people can't win. No matter how many stupid acts of killing they perpetrate, they won't win. Obscurantism can not win. Cause we are Charlie and we will stand in their way.

I feel bad for the cartoonists, but they were really playing with fire here. Sadly, it's just the world we live in.

Really? I just explained this to my wife. Freedom of speech and expression is something a lot of men died for in Europe.

People are also free to be offended but not to retaliate with violence.

That cartoon of Ganesha in an orgy with Jesus, Moses etc. is very relevant here. http://www.theonion.com/articles/no-one-murdered-because-of-this-image,29553/

Le Monde reports elite cops from BRI arrived at the scene of the shooting in Montrouge earlier today and the security zone around that area has been extended.

The Brigades de Recherche et d'Intervention (Research and Intervention Brigades, BRI), often called "Anti-Gang Brigades", are elite police specials units of the French Ministry of the Interior (Ministère de l'Intérieur).

They are specialised in very serious cases of robbery, or hostage kidnappings for the BRI of Paris (BRI-PP). For hostage kidnapping, the BRI-PP is supported by specialised units of the Préfecture de police and is nicknamed BRI-BAC ("Brigade Anti-Commando" Counter-commando Brigade) or "BRI en formation BAC" . They typically attempt to catch offenders in the act after monitoring their activities for some time.

Yeah I thought this was odd:

BBC said:
A special police brigade appears to be preparing to enter a building at the scene of this morning's shooting. Press and public are being moved away from the scene, a BBC Paris producer Luci Bonnor reports

That would suggest the situation hasn't ended?

Mayor of Rotterdam has reacted very tactfully to the terrorists. "If you don't like it here; fuck off and go away". He feels that any Dutch Muslim that agrees with the attacks, should just leave the country and go live somewhere else. Can't say I disagree.
He is a Muslim himself and he is from a Left party

Rumor:
The brothers have apparently been spotted in Picardie,(l'Aisne) in a gray clio with blacked licence plate on the highway to Paris, they are still armed.

Indeed, sounds like he has absolutely nothing to do with it and wanted to clear his name.
Le Monde has been super careful about him, not mentioning his name but mentioning he's apparently the brother in law of one of the 2 guys. No idea how he's implied though. In these hard times, I do appreciate that kind of carefulness (yes, I actually care about ethics in journalism)

Just got an update from Les Echos, my go to paper, that says the 2 guys have been found in Aisne.

this is so sad and revolting.
Those people were pacifists, some were 76 years old ffs

It's cowardice, stupidity and brainwashing that killed them

He's kind of missing the point. It's not about "not liking it here", it's one action in a broader war that's currently underway in a number of different places globally - Afghanistan, Syria, France.

Participants don't see it as a fight against France, in France, but rather as defending their values against Western imperialism. Yes, they're not just defending, but attempting to propagate their values, but we also attempt to propagate our values. We take a different approach though.
