then why are they still getting killed over the shit? this wreaks of a mess. i don't know what happened nor does anyone else but when stuff like this snowballs and escalates then more than one thing has gone very wrong
Dude, what the hell are you talking about? Let the actual professionals there take care of it. This is an unpredictable and messy situation. Of course it won't be resolved in a few hours. Hell, I'm surprised police can even find people like this, considering the amount of ground to cover.

Because they're up against assailants who are heavily armed, with basic training, no real agenda other than death and destruction, nothing to lose and are escaping from an intricate, ancient metropolis like Paris into a sprawling countryside - there isn't a special forces team in the world who could end this without a mess.

Didn't the police tell the journalists to not take pictures and post them online, because they kinda need to surprise the terrorists and keep their men safe, and any clue to the GIGN position could compromise the mission?

Yeah, this seems irresponsible by the press. I know people want to follow along 'as it happens' but giving away sniper positions is dumb, and dangerous. Wait until it's over to post that stuff.

Ok bringing a tank is just weird. Using the main cannon in Paris would be way, way too dangerous.

Dammartin-en-Goëlle, is about 40km away from Paris.

As for preventive action, they exist. Yesterday on French news, they said that prevention need around 25 persons for one suspect in order to bring them to justice before they act. They need to build the case. I don't expect any news for those prevention act though, hence the skewed perception that the only action are reactive.

Cut the water, hope the printing company doesn't have a vending machine and wait them starve? These guys were into pizza and pot, the munchees will flush them out.

Maybe they just use it just as a shield against the possible rocket launcher? I don't think that there would be any good use for the canon against two men on foot.

Yeah, that must be it. I'm starting to think that's just what was nearby, because an AMX-10 is not designed to shrug off hits like an MBT, it's a light vehicle with a big gun.

Or it could be a convoy unrelated to the hostage situation, like someone said.

Well they're not in Paris any more, but in an industrial area ~80 km away. But yes it is still weird. And in any case there's 0 chance they'd use the cannon. I still believe it is an unrelated convoy.
They may just feel that an armored vehicule with night vision could have a 0.1% chance of being useful. That cost nothing to having one at hand.

And seeing how this kind of news is covered, that may just be some twisted way to unsettle them.

uh...do you not remember the Boston bombing? And that was the US going all fucking out. I'd say the French are doing just fine.

Didn't know that. By working together do you mean training or actual operations? Still seems weird unless the French are severely undermanned.

ATLAS Network is exactly that. It's an association of European special forces that train/share expertise and if needed work together on operations.

Can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATLAS_Network

GSG 9 is very specialised in hostage situations and counter-terrorism in Europe. GSG 9's services are also offered internationally.

(Fun fact, in Ghost in the Shell a major security department Section 9 is based off of GSG 9. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Ghost_in_the_Shell#Public_Security_Bureaus and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Security_Section_9)

re RPG launcher:

A man whose grey Renault Clio was stolen at gunpoint by the suspects after the Charlie Hebdo shooting has been speaking to Europe 1. He said:

"The man was armed with a machine gun. I realised after that it was a Kalashnikov. I had my window open and he said to me: ‘Get out of your car, we need your car.’ I got out of the vehicle. At that moment a second person arrived who got into the passenger seat. He also had a gun with a kind of grenade at the end. It was undoubtedly a grenade launcher or something like that."

The man described the two men as being “very calm, very determined, very poised and very professional. Real commandos.” He said: “He never raised his voice, they never ran, they never seemed agitated. They weren’t sweating. Nothing at all like that. They gave the impression of being real operators. As they left they said to me: ‘If the media ask you anything, tell them that it’s Al-Qaida in Yemen.’

The man had his grey Clio stolen in the rue de Meaux in Paris’ 19th arrondissement, near the porte de Pantin. The suspects then hijacked a grey Peugeot after abandoning the Clio, which reportedly had run out of petrol.

What is the most likely punishment if they are caught alive? Will they be prosecuted in France?

Life in prison without the possibility of parole:

L'acte de terrorisme défini à l'article 421-2 est puni de vingt ans de réclusion criminelle et de 350 000 euros d'amende.

Lorsque cet acte a entraîné la mort d'une ou plusieurs personnes, il est puni de la réclusion criminelle à perpétuité et de 750 000 euros d'amende.

I don't find it that strange GER-FR-BE agents/spec ops works together. Maybe it is from a US point of view, but those terrorists are currently at less than 2 hours driving from our border (belgium) and 2.5 from germany.
They often operate together, since criminals sometimes cross the border - especially in the north of FR region.

It's a positive thing they work together so closely.

I hope they catch them alive but I can't see it.
They faced criticism the last time they weren't able to take alive a terrorist. I think they'll do everything they can as long as it doesn't reduce the chances of the hostage.

And as much I'd like to see them catch alive, I'm fine with that.

This is a time I hope god exists (any religion) and there is an afterlife. Just to explain them in afterlife that they were incredibly stupids, not the heroes they think.

What I really want to know is where the terrorists managed to hide from the police.
They couldn't have been on the run the whole time, right?

My two cents:
Satire is often done wrong and often lacks any class or genius
Satire is very often openly racist and that's because noone is clean and noone has the right to say "I'm without Guilt" because that's a lie
Any of us would LOVE satire when reflects our thoughts and would HATE satire when it goes against our dogmas
But this is its beauty and the only problem with satire is OUR dark side and OUR mediocrity

I think they are going to kill themselves as soon as special forces will try to get in....or they get tired.

Looks like they were hiding in the woods last night. The woods are bigger than the paris are a so it should be hard to find 2 suspects with only 5 thermal choppers.

the suburbs and surrounding of paris are actually quite huge - outside of the city there are a lot of acres/forrests/small villages, and most importantly a lot of roads they could take.
Just knowing they are "heading north" they could take 6 main roads and all those are connected with smaller highways and normal roads in between. If you open up google maps and zoom out of paris you'll get a pretty good idea how complex the area is.

I'm surprised they found them within 2 days to be honest (and it took a gigantic police force to do it). Overall though, I think the french police did a good job handling the situation until now.
