Small news update: there have been negotiations about the evacuation of a nearby school with young children (200 children aged between 3 and 10 years old). Apparenty the terrorists agreed to it.

how thoughtful

Negotiating with the terrorists about the evacuation of a nearby school? Why? Not like they have any say in it. They're not getting out of that building.

They probably have a direct line of fire though. RPG missile hitting a school bus is not good.

Maybe the Police force is trying to make the terrorists feel superior and in control, maybe it's a play.

Things like this give the suspects a sense of power and control... it encourages them to stay in communication which means the hostage is safe a little while longer and there's more time to gather intelligence and stage the intervention.

As far as I'm concerned, the bastards can have their ego stroked for as long as needed if it keeps children, a hostage and the responders safe.

A former GIGN officer explains:

Either the specialists think it's still possible to negotiate with the terrorists, then the hostage situation can go on for a long time, or the fugitives' determination to die as martyrs doesn't leave any room for negotiation then armed intervention becomes necessary. The whole difficulty for negotiators, he says, is to determine when you go from one situation to the other.

The GIGN only intervenes when "the hostages are clearly put in danger (...) Having the terrorists surrender the hostages is the priority", another former GIGN officer says.

In case the negotiations get broken, "the difficulty is that there would be no survival instinct anymore" from the two men, who'd then try to cause as many casualties as possible among law enforcement. The priority of political authorities will be to save the hostages' lives."It's also the ethics" of the intervention forces.

It would seem to me that they are negotiating the scenario for a final stand-off. This isn't boding well for capturing them alive, I fear. And it is a damn pity. There're a lot of murky dettails about the true purpouse and origin of the attackers, and inelligence gathering ought to take precedence over retribution. Let's just all hope for the best outcome.

I'm trying to comprehend why they did this. It really is insane to murder, cause mayhem and be ready to sacrifice your own life, all thanks to some stupid cartoons.

I'm shaking my head here....it's just all unbelievably stupid, horrible and sad.

.

I see that these two brothers were allowed to travel to and from France to go fight in Syria, while having criminal records and being known to intelligence agencies.

How is it that so many European muslims seem to have free reign to get radicalised and travel all over the place, get criminal records, go fight in Middle Eastern wars, return to Europe when they want and get their hands on serious weaponry, all under the noses of Western intelligence, who know who they are?

A similar situation came to light in Australia recently, where Muslims were getting radicalised in networks in Australia, traveling to the Middle East to fight in wars, and returning back to Australia.

I hope these questions get asked.

According to BFMTV, another hostage situation after a gun fight is taking place in Paris.

The journalists are assuming it's the 3rd man involved.

Yes, this is a topic that is important too. The guy in Australia clearly had enough red flags. We shouldn't stop immigration and people who escape wars, but when people are doing crap in the country that tried to help them, throw them out.

edit: Of course it would be a bit more complicated with the brothers since they are actually french if I understood that right. Anyways, everybody should look into what can be improved.

Here is one in French

This time it's linked to the death of the police woman from yesterday.
Thank you!
