Tesla Model 3 - OT - The cheap one

I love what Tesla has done for the auto industry, but that interior is absolutely horrendous. Even the seats look terrible.

Seats look pretty standard for a low end luxury car like an A3. Rest of interior is pretty austere but not sure what you find lacking, a bunch of missing dials and buttons? Ventilation system is also quite trick.

Im excited this is coming out, but I wont be getting one. Ill wait for someone to do it better. I just can't live with that interior.

I don't think there's anything lacking. But compared to the A3 for example, that interior looks super cheap. Not to mention A3 is also cheaper. I love the idea of a cheap(er) electric car, but this interior doesn't look good at all. Curious to see how it drives.

$5-8000 extra charge for enhanced autopilot and fully autonomous (down the road) is disappointing.
I was hoping for the software update to be free.

It's 5-8k on the S and X, i don't know why you'd have any expectation this would be free on 3.

I thought the hardware was already part of it and this was a mere software update.
I thought all their cars being autonomous capable (hardware wise) out-the-box was a thing.
Both of those are true.
However, there was never an expectation that autonomous driving hardware/software was gonna be free.
At the very least, once you purchase the ugrade all the updates for it are completely free.

With my order (from last year) I'm currently set for January-March 2019 since I'm waiting for AWD. Will be going for Long Battery option. Actually I'm going to postpone my delivery until summer/fall that year since I'm living temporarily abroad at the moment. And I might switch over to Model Y if revealed prior.

I waited in line before the unveil on March 31st, and I can get a first production (extended battery) November 2017 - January 2018, a standard battery January - March 2018, or a dual motor September - November 2018. I think I might go for the dual motor and give my self time to save up for the one I really want.

Was surprised to read that there's only one air vent in the back of the car. I can't see that working in either hot or cold weather... but I guess time will tell.

Edit - Having read another site it appears the Verge must have been wrong on that.

I assume the windscreen is heated at least?

Can I ask why the fuss about this? Is there one single big thing or is it a combination of factors? We wouldn’t be getting all this hype about a new leaf or bolt, yet Musk is seemingly getting all the plaudits for inventing electric vehicles even though he clearly didn’t.

I can’t see what is such a big jump over other options to warrant quite this gap in reaction.

I don't see how this is telling us anything about Model 3's safety, though. It may be safer, it may less safe. There is no way to tell from this video. Generally speaking, cars are built in a way that they absorb lots of energy, so for all we know this system might be working way better on the Volvo than the Tesla in that video.

Yup, you want as much deformation as possible without actually impacting the occupant. Will be a case of waiting to see what the actual numbers / impacts on the dummies are before you can tell if one is better than the other.

Supposedly the first "affordable" fully electric car with a decent range.

The more I see this the more I'm totally ok with a base model. My 2007 Lexus ES with 215k miles is getting a little long in the tooth.

I'll trade up to this when it his 300k.

I think the wood really helps. Or at least, having something there.

Autonomous driving + best safety for me

Hang out with Steve.
If you have a preorder you can find out your delivery window depending on options here:

https://www.tesla.com/support/model-3-reservations-faq

I placed my preorder online, about 90 minutes after they went live. I live in northern Virginia. If I stick with the 310 mile range RWD, I should get my car between January and March of 2018. If I decide to wait for the AWD version, the delivery window moves to November 2018-January 2019.

It's highly likely that the full federal $7500 tax credit will no longer be in effect if I wait for AWD. It'll probably be at the half or possibly even the 1/4 level by that time.

I know it's been said to death but man that design and interior though. I wouldn't be comfortable or happy with 40-50k car (with decent options) having such an interior. It's not like this car is fully automated so that I never have to look at the interior. It just looks so half assed. Even without buttons and dials it should be possible to make it look a bit nicer. And I just don't get why a lot of manufacturers (with Tesla going to the extreme here) are moving towards using touchscreens and touch buttons only instead of good old tactile buttons and dials. I can't use touchscreen and touch buttons blindly. That's just bad design. And I know that one can use voice commands but sometimes hitting a button is just simpler than speaking up or interrupting some conversation to talk to the car.

Either way I hope things get more towards where I would like it by the time I'm in the market for such a vehicle, which is at least 5 years from now. Hopefully the model 3 evolves properly over the next few years. Looking forward to what BMW does with their 3 series.

Wow, my estimated delivery date is several months before I was anticipating. I ordered within minutes of the site going live, and my estimate is December 2017 to February 2018 for the long range model. I think Tesla may be over-anticipating the number of people that want the $44k version, or at least the estimator is made to get people excited about how soon they could get their car, if they go with the higher spec version.

We'll see how it pans out.

Not getting all the hate for the interior. I think people are just used to having a shit ton of buttons to control various functions.

Like, when you think about it, on 99% of cars the air vents look out of place and clunky. The idea of one continuous crease for air, with direction control done by the touchscreen seems fucking cool to me.

I'm guessing if it had a normal gauge cluster in front of the wheel it would look less minimal, but I dig what they're going for. Also, the UI on the screen looks marvelous. I sincerely hope that they improve the speed/responsiveness of the UI with the model 3.

I checked the online reservation tool and it says my estimate is Dec 2017 - Feb 2018 if I opt for the high battery, or Oct-Dec 2018 if I wait for the AWD version. I may end up doing that just to buy myself some more time, as well as wait to see what issues crop up with the initial production run, but it's looking more and more like this will be my next car.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I might not get this car. I've been following the Model 3 speculation for years and I'm a day one reservation owner. This car was a big goal for me.. but the options I want are just priced too high. Especially the autonomous driving without any proof that it'll every actually work. Maybe I'll give it a few years and pick up a used model after the first leases end.

I'm kind of torn but in a good position to wait (buying a house in the fall or early next year and not interested in having something I'd need to charge prior to that), so my plan is to sit on the pre-order and see what the market (and inventory) looks like early to mid next year. I'm also not enthused with some of the options and pricing but not completely swayed towards buying or not buying yet based on that alone.

Really hope this kickstarts the electric revolution. Not sure about all the bullshit with no control over driving. I mean come on now. I want to drive myself sometimes when not going to work.

I actually really like the look of it. Half the fun though would be the Enhanced Autopilot package, which puts you at $40k. And I'd really like that glass roof, which comes with other interior upgrades putting you at $45k. I can probably get away with the smaller battery, at least...

Looking forward to reviews!

I'm staying with the 35k + 5k Upgrades. I work from home so there's no need for a larger battery. In addition; I won't be buying the full autonomy as there isn't a point in doing so with my current work life style.
