232,000 preorders
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/716089404985487361

Elon better get to work because 232,000 cars won't be building themselves. That's more than twice as many cars as Tesla has sold in the company's entire lifetime, and four times the number of cars Tesla sold in 2015 (about 55k Model S + X). At some point he really needs to stop taking preorders, because the people who just preordered are realistically looking at taking delivery in 2019 already. I mean there's no point in taking 1 million preorders if they won't be able to deliver the 1 millionth car until 2025.

Scaling up the production of the actual vehicles isn't really the challenge, there is plenty of experience doing that kind of thing in the auto industry already due to the cyclical nature of the business.

Production of the batteries is the issue as it's a new technology that hasn't yet been scaled up to mass production levels, so no one can predict the kinds of issues that it will create. Can you get enough raw materials, are there production steps which don't scale well, do standard automation technologies work for the production process, etc. I assume Tesla has smart engineers who have done the math though.

As for the production of the cars though, they have the factory space, and presumably most of the tooling that will be required to more than exceed the demand, so it's just about hiring people and buying robotics and machinery to fill out however many lines they need to fill the demand. That's just a matter of money, which shouldn't be a problem with the preorder cash and if needed, a low interest short term loan will be easy to get when they can show the future sale.

Holy shit.

He said he was rethinking their construction model because they weren't expecting such demand, but it just keeps going up. They better use the money on improving their construction facilities without compromising the vehicle build quality.

Congrats to Tesla, but I think the biggest challenge is still ahead of them and is building this in enough quantity and have costumers happy. Best of luck to all the team.

Their facilities are fine, they have two of the largest factories on the planet(even if one is still technically under construction).

It's hiring all the workers without having a dip in quality that is going to be the issue.

I would like to see more features in the future, like solar panels for charging the car while you drive or parked outside. I know solar panels don't produce nearly enough to power a car in a timely fashion, but every extra bit of power helps if it takes 50 hours to fully charge one. I've seen a Prius with a solar panel on it before. Not sure how much that helped. A customer traded it in for a Fusion Hybrid or a C-Max. I forget which.

It doesn't take 50hrs to charge one.

It takes about 8 hours max to charge at home if the battery is fully drained.

Whoa they just keep rolling in. Wow. Yeah it's looking like 2019 for some of these preorders to be fulfilled at this rate. Wow. Incredible demand.

IIRC the Priuses (Prii?) that had solar panels just used them to power the AC and reduce strain on the battery.

The problem it that it's closer to 500 hours for a reasonable amount of solar panels that could possible be placed on a vehicle that size.

The solar panel on the Prius IIRC is mostly used to keep the ventilation running while parked in the sun, so when you get into it it's not 800 degrees. A nice quality of life feature, but you can't really get any reasonable amount of power from a small solar panel on the roof of a car.

Just put a grill on it. I'm willing to stay with my until this comes out but I hate the front end at the moment.

Do people have grille Stockholm syndrome or something?

This is what I can find on why Toyota didn't allow the solar panels to be used to charge the car.

Im still considering whether I could make this work while living in a condo. I live across the street from a bank of chargers, while supermarkets like Whole Foods have chargers too. I drive about 4-5 miles to work.

If you live in an apartment or condo and park in a garage, try to get your landlord to install 240v outlets/chargers. Some will oblige since it's a good business practice for future tenants.

Got my confirmation e-mail about 24 hours later. The car looks great to me and very excited to see and read about the positive word of mouth from those who were at the event in person and were able to go on test rides. I'm not too worried about the interior issues, I'm sure the final production interior will change and either have a second screen behind the wheel similar to the S; or alternatively a HUD that projects your current speed and other info directly onto the glass in the driver's line of sight.

Stop taking preorders? Seriously? As long as Tesla inform people there's a queue, pretty sure people have no problem waiting a year or two. If someone is willing to hand you $35k, pretty sure you'll find a way of building them.

Honestly this makes Tesla heavily heavily undervalued imo... They literally just generated 6b revenue in 2 days and they haven't started making the cars yet.

I always find it adorable when people talk about Tesla stock as if it's a car company. That's not where the money is and Tesla knows it.

Not even the AC; it just powered a fan in the roof. The idea was to circulate air in a parked car so it doesn't get as hot. A good idea really, but very simple in scope.

Man, so close. In a few years when the battery life catches up to my particular needs (215 mpc is about 100-150 short of what I need) I'll be all over this. It's really tempting as is. Like, really, really tempting.

Finally got my reservation email a couple hours ago.

I want this car but not gonna preorder something 2 years away for $30k.

It is a long time if you want the car right now, but for me it's perfect. Buying a 35k car(actually probably more since I'm Canadian) right now would put me in a tight spot, because I have a wedding coming up and other expenses as well, but in 2 years I should be in the perfect position to own this car :)

Is there like an electric vehicle break even calculator?

like to see if you save more money by getting a cheaper gas car or a more expensive hybrid or electric vehicle

This car is competing with the likes of BMW 3 series or Mercedes C class, so compared to those cars it's undoubtedly cheaper to purchase and operate right from the start, but if you want to compare it to Civics or Corollas, which I find is not a fair comparison because they're not entry level luxury cars with the same performance as the Model 3, to break even on the Model 3 would take a long time, especially if gas prices are low and electricity prices keep going up.

Yea I just ran a few calculators and the electricity savings aren't that big. The cheaper gas car was still cheaper in the long run for people like me who don't have a long commute at least. Wouldn't break even for 15+ years.

I compared the cheapest out of each category (Kia Rio, Prius C, Mitsubishi i-Miev, Nissan Leaf)

You're able to purchase a supercharger outlet for your house, correct?

No, but you can get a level 2 charger, how fast it charges depends on the amount of current the wiring to the panel can support and the amount of current the car can draw. Generally it should be fast enough to charge the car for most usage patterns though.

Edit: already answered, should have kept reading haha

Why do you need that much range, out of curiosity?

The more I see this car in user videos the more I like the design. The glass roof really is a distinguishing feature that doesn't show nearly as well in pictures.

I think it is time for us to think about paying a little extra to save our beautiful planet.

As consumer demand drives advances in clean/renewable electricity generation, your power costs should come down over the next 15+ years.

I think that's the theory behind what Musk is trying to do with the Tesla anyway. Create the market and then let the market drive innovation.

The facts are on my side, though.

You have yet to post anything factual regarding Tesla. The actual facts are it is a publicly traded company with a $30+ billion market cap that isn't going anywhere. They made 50k cars last year, and are producing roughly 50% more cars as each year passes. Yes they are spending lots of cash, but this is expected because they are growing massively. Once you grasp that you may be able to make some factual statements regarding their cars and company.

Are you operating under the assumption that the gas will stay at current prices across that span of time? Or have you factored in the possibility of significant fluctuations like has already happened in the past few years?

Once the gigafactory is fully online they can do more than 200000 cars in a year.

I'm not a hater. I'm a realist.
Your realism looks like hate when damn near a quarter of a million people have plunked down 1k on car they won't have for at minimum a year.

Also calling these people hipsters is ridiculous.

I've yet to see any facts from you, other than the Bolt is more expensive and may come out sooner while simultaneously looking a lot less appealing than the model 3.

I posted an article from an actual investor I suggest you read it.

I wonder how a car like this would handle in the snow and ice of the north east. Would the torque on acceleration help with the snow or cause it to spin more? Is this fwd/rwd/awd?
