Musk isn't interested in record profit margins, his entire reason for starting Tesla in the first place was to get the public driving EV's as soon as possible. He's stated in multiple interviews that he WANTS the auto industry to follow and copy him and start selling competitive EV's of their own, that was his goal from the start. He's even selling components to the competition already to help them out! The Bolt is only one example, but it's proof positive of the ways that Elon's Tesla company has pulled the auto industry into FINALLY accepting and marketing EV's that people want. Musk's ideals and truism have given his company something invaluable: consumer respect, and it's paying off for him in dividends despite the missed deadlines and quality issues.

BUT, your argument about the Bolt having first mover advantage isn't a very good one. Elon just sold preorders for 200,000 Model 3's in two days, MORE THAN A YEAR before they are even available. How many Chevy Bolt's do you think are pre-ordered? It's far less than the Model 3. And they are coming out this year! And then there are the rumors of the Bolt simply being a compliance car for Chevy and limited to 30,000 units per year. They aren't going to beat Musk at his own game if that's true.

So, can you please stop trolling this thread about the unveiling of the Model 3 now and start your own thread about how Tesla Motors is going to fail? Thank you.
Dude. The Bolt isn't a compliance car, it's going to be sold in all 50 states, Canada, and Europe. To say that, and to say they're artificially limiting production, is insulting. Insulting to all the money GM spent on R&D. Insulting to the partnership they forged with LG. Insulting to their attempts to move at a lightning pace. Insulting to the ride sharing partnership they forged with Lyft because of the Bolt.

Maybe buying into the Tesla hype isn't my thing. But I'm just being a realist here.

With no traditional instrument cluster, I'm assuming there will be a HUD of some kind. Either way, can't wait to see part 2.

I'm guessing it will be shown off again sometime in the fall of next year.

The bolt is an ugly car that is slower, has smaller range, and costs more than the model 3. Why do you keep defending it? It needs to be 15k cheaper to have a chance.

IIRC the 30k models per year was just a hypothetical number they were throwing out - they've been quite adamant that the car isn't a compliance car, and that they can produce at least 50k per year.

Yeah I'm guessing projected HUD onto the windshield.

I'm hoping for fully autonomous driving though, imagine turning all your commute time into highly productive portable gaming time.

what about my windows phone?

What's a "windows phone"? I've only heard of iOS and Android...

It's cool reading through Elon's tweets. Someone tweeted about the dislike for the front end and he said its being tweaked.

Also tweets on how the steering controls and system will feel like a spaceship. Plus how popular the Matte Black color is.

My guess: The HUD will be your iPad. It's an option, in case you already have one, otherwise you get one for half the price or something.

<5k for the dual-motor upgrade is awesome! That's one of the options I'm going to be prioritizing. Doesn't the dual-motor option on the S come with a larger battery as well? Hopefully that's the case here.

good luck if you live in bumblefuck, montana

That's cool. The nearest supercharger to my place is some 250km away, and is out of the way in any event. If Tesla build one at Muswellbrook then we'd be in business.

Eh, it's not a terrible looking EV, but I'm far more concerned with it's performance and reliability. I mean it is Chevy after all...

Chevy is alright these days. My Volt is the best car I've ever driven and it has never given me any problem the 3 and a half years I've owned it.

I think reliability should be the least of your concerns regarding the Bolt.

My thoughts exactly! And yes it does come with a larger battery with AWD too. You can see this on the customize page for the Model S.

i see nothing near plentywood and outlook, montana!

To be honest, I don't know much about Montana as I live in Calgary, But I just wanted to point out that they do plan on building more, so I guess I was assuming that the parts they plan on building them are major. :)

I'm curious to see what they have in store for 2017 though, as they said during their conference they plan on doubling the amount of supercharger stations by the end of 2017 and quadruple that of destination chargers.

You can also request a supercharger to be made somewhere too, as they have a form on their site.

ok that's great but what if i want to project a youtube video from my lumia onto the dashboard?

What's a "lumia"? Is that some kind of lamp? Do you use the lamp to project your iPad's image onto the dashboard?

Do we really think full autopilot is going mainstream in 2 years? Can we go to sleep on the interstate.

I'm going to assume it will require both hands on the steering wheel for most of the ride lol

Stop trying to kill my dreams

The Model S doesn't require it until it decides it's unsure. Then it will ask you to put your hands on the wheel. Probably for the best to be paying attention anyway, in case it follows a car off an exit that you didn't mean to take or something.

No kidding, that's awesome to hear. I don't know anyone in real life who owns a Volt, wish I did so I could see one up close. I'll be taking the Bolt for a test drive for certain.

I just want to do nothing and have the car take me places. I don't even want to tell it where to go. It should hook up to my calendar and just take me to the appointment location automatically.

Perhaps some kind of HUD is in store for the model 3 after all?
http://www.theverge.com/2016/4/3/11358016/tesla-model-3-spaceship-steering-wheel-elon-musk-tweet

Not sure what else he could mean buy "futuristic spaceship controls" but he has my interest. With this and the front end tweaking, I think I'll hang on to my reservation to see what they have in store.

from his early concept sketches for the dash, it's looking they could go the way of the Toyota FT-1 concept HUD design which would be amazing

I think we're all wondering exactly how much Google integration we'll get in Teslas down the road, pun maybe intended?

With integrated Google Calendar and Maps support at a minimum, this would be easy to accomplish. Plus the Autopilot, auto-parking, automatic garage exit/entry, and Summon features would make it truly automatic. Your phone tells you that you leave in 10 minutes, you get in the car, it starts itself and backs out of your garage and opens and closes the garage door, drives itself to your destination, finds an open spot, and parks itself. You leave and go do whatever. When you're done, you come out and stand by the entrance and push the Summon button on the phone app, the car backs out of it's parking spot, drives itself to the entrance to pick you up, and then drives you home.

Looks like pre-orders have slowed down a bit, but it's still over 20k / day.
Its insane how car manufacturers have treated full ev as a hobbyist-only endeavor weirdos drive in equally weirdo looking cars. They have never said hey, maybe people want GOOD looking cars instead of hideous abominations that is your average looking ev out there.

Seriously, every other ev vehicle makes me barf. I wouldnt want to seen 10 ft near any of them.

And all the comparably priced cars have like half the range

is it too late to put a reservation down?....

All that stuff sounds easy until you remember that gps isn't accurate enough on its own, and even Internet-based maps can be out of date, and so the car must also rely on sensors to follow the road, let alone avoid obstacles. And those sensors need to have a clear view. Throw in snow, rain, mud, etc and suddenly the problem becomes enormously more difficult.

That's why it's going to be a long time before we see general use car autonomy, unless you're somewhere where those conditions rarely occur.

There's a reason most autonomous car work is being done in California.

But yes -- all of that will be very cool when the tech does arrive. However I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

reservation justification: you would have spent that $1k on something you didn't need anyway. might as well use it as a savings fund that you don't have easy access to. make the decision to pull it or not in two years.

Since they are delivering to west coast before east... I wonder if someone In California that preordrs today, would get it before someone who waited In a store in new York a few days ago
