the model s is an incredibly well reviewed car. people love it.
It's not normal. But here I am in line.
Look the big deal here is the expected 200+ miles per charge, the price point and expected quality/coolness of it. The fact that the deposit is fully refundable is also a draw since I can back out any time losing only my wasted time in line. The only car that comes close is the Bolt but come on it's a Chevy.
Go and look up Tesla sales. They are literally non-existing compared to other manufacturers. Sales speak for them self.
For a company, who is trying to change the world, their sales have been poor. Technology is simply not their to make a cheap car that can compete with petrol car.
The range itself is really not that much different than running out of gas for a non-electric vehicle. Instead of having to hunt down a gas station, you use one of Tesla's superchargers if you're away from home. If you ARE home, you just plug it in yourself.
I drive an electric vehicle (Fiat) and I no longer have to stop by the gas station on the way to work to fill up; I fill up in our garage on our cheap $0.11 kwh electricity when it runs low, about once per week, and I'm ready to go the next morning. For those who use their cars mainly as back-and-forth commuters, they really are much more convenient than a traditional vehicle.
They are also amazingly quiet and very peppy from stop to freeway speeds. Not having to change its oil every 3 months is also a bonus.
Apparently my spouse is one of those in line at our local Tesla showroom. He sent me a text about 30 minutes ago saying there were 150 people outside waiting. He's been wanting an S for a while, but may pull for a 3 if its specs are well enough for his tastes. Personally, I don't feel the 3 is going to be *all* that great, and it is a bit overhyped. Consumers are expecting a S-level vehicle at a mid-30s base model price point simply based on an assumption of Telsa's brand, and I seriously doubt that is what is going to be delivered.
But, it's his money. My little Fiat is a better vehicle anyway

Standing in line to reserve a car, sight unseen, reliability unknown (probably not good if the Model S is any indication), and no official specs.
What the fuck is going on here? Are Tesla fans the new Apple fans?
Sure, some of the specs that have leaked are pretty impressive if true, 300 mile range definitely starts bringing the electric car more into the range of feasibility for many and a 0-60mph in 4 seconds is undeniably quick, but these are all just rumors for now.
What about the rumors that the design wasnt finalized until January? I brought this up earlier and somebodies response was "well its whats inside that counts".....uh sure, until the fit and finish of the exterior starts going to shit because it was patched together at the last minute.
Im not saying theres no reason to be excited but people lining up to plop down preorders on a car sight unseen, price and specs unknown seems like insanity to me.

No thats the Tesla Roadster, been out for a while now. Ive had the chance to drive one around a track a few years ago. Very fun but a bit heavy, you can definitely feel the weight of the batteries when cornering.

Rumours say a 200 mile range for a car scheduled to be realised at the end of 2017 (delays still possible) costing around 30-35k.
That to me does not sound that impressive to be honest. Certainly not enough for me to stand in a line.
Will be interesting to see what other manufactures car produce with electric cars in 2018. I think they could match these specifications.

I'm on mobile so I can't find the report, but I recall about 70-80% of US drivers have a commute of less than 30 miles each direction based on government stats.
And I live in Los Angeles. A day trip is easily possible with a 200 mile range.
Why in the world would you line up for a car that won't be in your hands until Late 2017, but probably early 2018 at the earliest? Not to mention this is for a car of unknown spec, reliability, styling, etc.
This is weirder than people who line up for iPhones because at least they get what they've lined up for in store after waiting.

It cost me 90 mins of my time this morning to get my reservation in.
I'll watch the unveil tonight and follow the progress up until the time I have to confirm my order. I don't really see any risk other than the opportunity cost of having that $1,000 in my pocket.

I never said that. I simply said that sales have been pretty low, mainly due to the price and range factor, indicating that the majority of people do not consider Tesla to be a viable option for them.
Once Tesla can match the price + range of normal cars, then the sales will go though the roof. The problem is once this happens, other car manufacturers will also be offering similar options.

What do the sales say exactly? That people don't want these cars? Then why are you in this thread being confused about people who want these cars so bad they are willing to stand in line to preorder them?
I'm really not sure what kind of point you're trying to make here. Is it a bad thing that people are buying electronic cars? Is it bad that they're buying them from Tesla? What is it?
Does it matter that the first fully electric cars from various makers are not viable for a number of people?

But anyway, their lives, their time, their money I guess.
Tesla's only problem right now is price, not range. Hence the demand for the 3. Maybe you drive 450km a day and they don't have the range for you, but we're not talking about edge cases here.
They don't just get to say, production done 200k cars on the market. This is a slow ramp, so being #1 vs being #50k could mean a year or more of waiting.

Sales say that the majority of people are not interested in buying a Tesla yet. That's why lines of people standing outside is bizarre, considering their are not exactly selling like hot cakes. Once Tesla have their new factory up, they should be able to meet the demand fairly easy for a fairly low number of sales.

After the initial "why line up", and the reply "because we want to" it's really not lending to a healthy debate imo.
It's not so much that your views don't match mine, but you seem to be arguing to argue. Most who is interested knows what they are doing, and have likely been waiting a long time for an affordable Tesla (specifically, Tesla). We're excited. That's the rush. That plus being able to fully back out means our odds of not having to wait 2 years, and maybe just a year and a half are higher.

Not really. I simply asked why people & media have to much hype for Tesla. Every answer I got back did not make sense. Argument like its a cool car with technology just seem weird considering there are other cars that are cool and have technology.

There were 5 terminals - there were probably 60-70 people ahead of me.
I was in line at 8:30, out of there by 10. Reservations opened at 9.

What are you talking about? How many people do you think buy D/F segment cars? Model S has surged up to the top of that segment.
Are you expecting an S-class to sell as much as a Civic or Corolla? Nobody in the auto industry thinks like this.
