We all know that the 3 goty's are returnal, forza horizon 5, and metroid dread. Ratchet was pretty but it was also boring and way too easy.
edit: village was great! But after 3 excellent resident evil titles in a row its impact was lessened

Ratchet was fun but it was still just a ratchet game just shinier. I know buzzwords of portals and rifts were supposed to be the "next gen thing" but I felt like I was having dejavu when playing. I've been playing these games for what feels like 20 years now. I think the formula remains the same, if you haven't been playing R&C since the original trilogy this is probably amazing. But to me it was more of the same.

I'm playing R&C right now and I don't think that is true. The game is much more open than past games with side missions are puzzles that I've never seen in R&C before.

Ratchet is a good game, I enjoyed my time with it But when people are saying it's a graphical and technically strong game it only highlights that really, at its core it's a good ratchet game with some pretty graphics.
god of war is a technical marvel with great deep playability and was a genuine GOTY in my eyes. Literally every other game on this list is a better game than ratchet imo And like I said I love insomniac and their games. I've completed every ratchet and clank and it didn't really stand out from any of the others.
with a lot of people here that it's sacrilege that returnal or FH5 isn't on the list But anyway…

Well, I disagree with your opinion that A Rift Apart is a "good ratchet game with some pretty graphics". I'd say it is an exceptionally well done Ratchet game and is deserving of GOTY as any I've played this year.
I love Forza Horizon 5, but honestly I have a hard time reconciling those who say A Rift Apart is just another Ratchet game and yet Forza Horizon 5 "at its core" isn't that much different from Forza Horizon 3 or 4 but at a different locale. But who really wants it to be dramatically different? Like Ratchet, it is executed exceptionally well and that should bring it into the GOTY conversation, but being a racer is a bit of a curse when it comes to overall awards. Regardless, I don't think it is a fair to parse out that criticism selectively.

With Forza, there isn't much scope for innovation. Its already pushed boundary of open world driving game pretty much as far as it will go.
Same cannot be said about Ratchet. There is much more Sony can do. Look at Mario games from Nintendo.
Sony doesn't treat Ratchet in same way. Forza is a no expense spared game from MS.

I think a lot of the claims that A Rift Apart is just another Ratchet and Clank comes from assumptions though. I'm playing in open world environments with exploration and side quests. No, this isn't going to rival Horizon Zero Dawn or some massive open world game, but this isn't typical for R&C either. That's the thing. Ratchet, and Forza for that matter, don't have to be original to break the mold and change things up. I don't buy this idea that Forza gets a pass because its done everything it can possibly do.

It doesn't matter if there are few other games that are better. It's not like it's on my best game of all time list, but I enjoyed it a ton, and as an older guy with too little time for gaming and too many younger kids it was perfection. Superb cinematics, localized to swedish voice acting with Disney quality combined with solid gameplay and a varied adventure turned it into one of the best family playthroughs I've ever done. For the kids it was like watching a Pixar movie, for me it was a great an enjoyable action adventure platformer I didn't have to translate and could actually play during daytime.
Sadly I don't think anyone in english talking countries understand how big of a deal that voiced localization was. Compare it with my personal GOTY, Metroid Dread, where I had to translate every cutscene on the fly because I had kids sitting beside me going "What did they say?" everytime a textline popped up or word was spoken. Dread was still better as a game than everything else this year but I still don't mind Ratchet winning, the family friendly approach and localization is at the top of the industry, not even Nintendo has made something this good in that area.

This one's just the fan vote, tho TBH I'd expect Metroid Dread to win that. Now if Rachet wins the main GOTY award too, then that'll open up some "speculation" because it starts to ask what merits they hold highest in determining a GOTY nominee.
No shade, but it's not like Rift Apart has an exhilarating narrative or that it has some game mechanics that are truly innovative. If the biggest metrics, then, are that the game's technically impressive, has strong art direction and is fun to play, then it doesn't explain why a few other games weren't nominated for GOTY when they also meet those metrics and have just as good if not better MetaCritic review aggregate averages (not to mention, met the deadline timing).
If it's a purely subjectivity-based category then they need to actually communicate that better, and maybe have a separate category that takes a more objective metric (review score aggregate average) into account. Because when you're describing the "best" in a lot of other areas, you usually go by the numbers. For example, most of the time the Film of the Year at the Oscars tends to be the one with the highest review average, so why not follow that model for games? Or if they want to pursue a "games as art" angle instead and pick games that move storytelling forward for the medium, actually pick the best game which does that, which probably isn't Rift Apart (out of the total games which came out this year).
