'Thanks to PS3, Sony might bankrupt themselves.'

I read this comment on B3D and even though I disagree with it, I found it interesting for further discussion.

Don't forget that Sony is probably putting in their old PSX/PS2 chips into PS3. This means more $$$ to dish out. And if EE/VU was any indication... CELL will be very expensive. So once that's all said and done, Microsoft probably gearing to lose about as much at launch as they did with Xbox (this time without a hard drive)...

Remember, if PS3 is around as expensive as PS2 was, Sony might bankrupt themselves.

And then both Microsoft and Sony will destroy their selves in an epic, bloody battle...leaving but one survivor in the smoldering ashes. May the N-Bots rise...AGAIN!

I can't believe someone just earnestly quoted Dopeyfish regarding this topic! :lol :lol :lol

Why? Is he some kind of a known troll? I must admit I post mostly at the OA these days - I'm not familiar with his posting history.

Expert analysis of next-generation dynamics by a delusional Xbot. Sony, a company that has dominated this industry for two consecutive generations, will bankrupt themselves with PS3. Sell your PS3 expectations! :lol

Anyway, on topic: While there's no doubt the intial costs will be huge, they'll quickly go down once the chip production switches to 65 and 45nm tech.

No, don't listen to them. DopeyFish is a fantastic and highly objective authority on anything concerning Microsoft.

While I don't think that Sony will go bankrupt they will most likely have to sell the PS3 at a much higher price if they want to put all of that in there. I can't honestly see all of that for only $299 unless they took something out.

Could give xbox2 an advantage here if that is indeed the case.

Hey, it's damn well true. PS2 put Sony in really troubled waters. Now with PS3 the rest of Sony isn't as good as it was in 2000 (even though it still was falling down) and the PlayStation is the only thing that really holds Sony afloat... What happens when the division goes in the red for 2+ years again?

PSP.

The Cell might have cost a lot in R&D, but it is supposed to be cheaper to produce than normal CPU's. It is the brute force approach. Build a very fast, cheap, generic, high yield, parallel processor that can be used in anything (need more power? just stick in a couple more identical Cell's), instead of a more specialized and complicated low yield CPU that would be more efficient yet also more expensive and not able to scale well.

I agree. I mean look at them they've become pathetic. The last couple of years the only thing they managed to do is create the most powerful processor, a new storage standard -Blue-Ray, buy MGM, release a portable with PS2 graphics, and create one of the most profitable movie franchises ever (Spiderman). They're going down.

I have an expert analysis from someone who's "in the know" and gave us some insightful comments:
I think ps3 is the devil all yall stupid mother fuckers should go throw your fucking selves off a fucking cliff and that is the only comit i have. Oh gay guy if you ever feel naughty come to water valley high school

However I was able to contact Jamesco from GameFaqs for some important information regarding future PS3 hardware:
A few years later after the PS3 comes out, I bet $100 that there will be a smaller one a few years later.

Luckily I was able to get a quick interview with a true industry legend and hear him weigh on the juicy details of Xbox 2:
Will the xbox 2 more than likley look like real people. what I mean by this is that the whole time you play madden 2005 or whatever madden is out then, will you totaly feel like your in the game.

You have no idea what you're talking about. For starters, the PSX and PS2 "chipsets" won't be in the PS3. PSOne and PS2 games will be emulated.

Yes. But where's the profit?

You can make all the new fanciest stuff in the world, but if there's other crap in the company that are dragging it's ass down, it's not really helping in the big picture, is it?

Wrong. PSX games will be emulated. EE/VU will be in the PS3.

Verily, Sony and the PlayStation brand stand at the very brink of ruin.

They are, dare I say, doomed?

The Cell technology is going to be used in other things besides the PS3. The cost will be made up a lot more quickly than it did for the EE and whatever other guts Sony initially took a loss on with the PS2.

Yeah, but the initial cost will still be high.

It will be on a different process too, so the yields will be lower resulting in higher cost per chip.

But really... if you couple it with a next-gen GPU from Nvidia... you're looking at a gouge around the same as PS2. It won't be a cheap machine for Sony.

This board is going downhill fast.

Well, if this is the place for anti-Sony analysis, here's something:
(NOTE: Opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the poster)

http://www.nypost.com/business/35681.htm

In a meeting with executives from four Hollywood studios this year, Sony Electronics brass laid it on the line: They were going ahead with technology for the next generation of DVDs, called Blu-ray, and the studios would have to take it or leave it.

As one high-ranking studio executive told The Post last week, it was as if Sony still believed it was the 1980s and it still controlled the world of consumer electronics. "I thought it was very arrogant of Sony to come to us with an almost finished product and not ask us our opinions, for our input. For a manufacturer to do that while developing a playback technology like Blu-ray is unheard of."

So, for those inside the DVD industry, last week's announcement that Paramount Pictures, New Line Cinema, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. would back Sony rival Toshiba, which is developing a competitor DVD technology called HD-DVD, was no surprise at all. Toshiba had invited studio participation from the very beginning.

And the fact that Sony was dealt another black eye was also no surprise. Consider:

* Within the portable audio sector, Sony executives placed their bets on the minidisc player and failed to react to Apple's iPod three years ago

* Sony management misjudged the worldwide demand for pricey and profitable flat-screen TVs this Christmas season

* Sony missed a holiday 2004 launch of its PlayStation Portable, allowing Nintendo a free ride toward first-week sales of 500,000 units for its DS

So if Sony's on hard times, it's not necessarily because of the PS3.

I try to follow the intial statement, but I can't quite see from where its coming or going...

So... PS3 is gonna be expensive, and microsft is gonna loose a ton of cash per unit. so sony is financially d00med?

Yeah Microsoft is gonna lose a ton per unit but they'll make it up in volume :lol

Microsoft is still loosing money after entering the market from the last reports we had.
You'd think that halo 2's gonna change this. I doubt it, unless Microsoft has sold more than 75 million Xboxes.

Ps2 didn't put Sony in troubled waters. It's what is putting Sony afloat.

Windows is the big money maker for Microsoft

PlayStation is the money maker for Sony

...and if at worst case the PSP and PS3 launch puts them in the sore red for another 2-3 years...does it really matter?

If they're in the lead as the #1 game company even if they're in the red they can just keep borrowing money and getting in debt until the profit finally comes back and they pay it off. I mean if PS3 launches and it has a huge market share, who wouldn't lend Sony some cash?

..and here I was thinking wow Dopey has really calmed down and become a normal poster these days...

Silly me.

:lol :lol :lol

The desperation ... already.

Classic.

Dopey was probably just having bad flashbacks to the Dreamcast, kinda like a Vietnam vet reliving a bad memory.
