I'm looking for the best laptop for $500-$600. Dedicated gxf card would be idea, as opposed to going with the HD 4000.

I'll take pretty much all suggestions. It'd be nice if it could play modern games at low settings.

This.

Is this laptop any good? Was having trouble finding more info about it, but I saw it at a store and it's within my budget range, and apparently has a 750m too? The monitor seems to be 1360x768 though :(

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-V5-572G-53338G50akk.96948.0.html

What kind of performance can I expect from this on games? And how reliable are Acer laptops? I'm planning to use it for a few years, thanks!
It's a good laptop. The 750M is capable of High settings at 1366x768, in current-gen ports.

Thoughts on cooling pads? My Y500 is getting quite a bit hotter than I'm comfortable with; GPU peaks at 93c and CPU around 87c, and this is after about 20 minutes, not hours of intensive use or anything. Never really heard anything definitive about cooling pad use though.

Thanks, I will look into that. Probably a smarter solution since I love osx.

Should I buy windows 7 or 8? Which version of said Windows? Amazon shows like a million versions of each.

I would go with Windows 7 (Home Premium should be fine).

You can actually download an iso from Microsoft and install it, and try it out for 30 days before you need to activate it, so you dont have to buy it to try it out.

I'm concerned anytime a GPU is getting over 90C, especially when it's getting there so quickly.

We've had many people with Y500s in this thread, who didn't have their cards getting nearly that high, so it strikes me as abnormal that two people within the last 50 posts have reported temps nearing 100 degrees.

So you can either take that up with Lenovo, or attempt to bring the temps down with a cooling pad. I've always been of the staunch opinion that a notebook which can't keep itself cool is failing in some manner.

I plan to do most of my gaming on XBO/PS4 but want a laptop that still gives me the option to game. Also, would love something that doesn't have a DVD drive, seems like such a waste of space/width to me.

What's your budget and maximum acceptable screen size?

Hey guys, my current laptop is on its last legs, and I'm in the market for a new one. While I don't game much on my current laptop, that's because it can't really run anything. I'd definitely play a lot more if I had something with some power.

My details:

Country: USA
Budget: Would prefer to keep it under $1000, but willing to go up to around the $1200 range or slightly over if the value is better. I'd say that $1300 is a hard maximum.
Max size: Prefer 15 inches.
Planned usage: Using this mainly for school and work, but I'd like the option of gaming, and I'd like it to be somewhat future-proof. Definitely would like to play stuff like Skyrim, the next Battlefield, Planetside 2, etc.
Misc: Would prefer SSD for the OS and some common programs, with a larger HDD for media. I have a lot of digital content, so something with at least 750 GB would be great. The more battery life the better. Also, I'd really prefer something that isn't too noisy. My current laptop is like a jet engine sometimes, and it makes me very self-conscious in class or work meetings.

Edit: I'd also like the option of running a second monitor while I'm at home doing spreadsheet work.

My man, please decide exactly how much of your money is free to be spent. If I show you an $899 machine and one that's $1299, would the prices influence your decision?

It's about value per dollar. If I can get something that runs today's games for $899, that's cool. But if I can get something for $1299 that's future-proof for the next 2 years, that would be a factor. Basically, everything above $1000 is money I'm willing to pay for future-proofing.

Maybe suggest two laptops at the two different price points?

Thoughts on this ASUS G75VX?

Two specific questions: is that a good value (for Canada)? And do you think it'd be able to run AAA games for the next couple years at least?

Thanks (K.Jack)

Terrible value, with ASUS' new G750JW out at $1,549 CAD. This is the one you want. I can't tell you it will be maxing PS4 ports at 1080p, but it'll easily last a couple of years. EDIT: Whoa, just saw that the GT60 w GTX 770M is only $1499 in Canada. THAT is the one to get!

edit: damn I need to refresh before posting, will double post in a few for you Jack

If you want to future-proof, you should consider the Sager NP8230.

Speakers just stopped working randomly, when I take it in I'll ask about the temps. Think there may be something wrong with a recent batch? I've only had the thing for about 3 weeks at this point, really don't want to have a bunch of stuff start failing because it's running abnormally hot.

Edit: Just saw the other Y500 post on the last page, this is concerning.

My G750's speakers seem broken. Whenever a loud sound occurs it makes a weird farting noise and distorts the original sound. Like, when Lich or Sven speak it occurs but not during the announcer. Should I take it back?

nvm updated the audio drivers. seems to work fine now.

Managed to get £450 selling my old laptop. Going to be putting it towards a mini-ITX gaming PC (the Fractal Design Node 304 GAFBox One in the "I Need A New PC" thread) as I can get better value for money and a more powerful machine building something like that.

I'm interested in getting a new laptop, and wanted a better-informed opinion than any random person on the Internet. First off, I think my use case falls under the medium tier of gpu power.

Country: USA
Maximum budget: $900-1000
Max size: Strong preference for 14 inches, 15 inches in exceptional circumstances
Planned usage: Moderate gaming. One necessary target is running Dota 2 in at least 60fps at medium/high settings at native resolution. Running modern games at medium settings (30-60 fps) at native resolution is another target.
Misc: Disk drive not necessary, but not discouraged.

I've seen the Lenovo Y410p recommended several times, but other suggestions are welcome (especially if the laptop is cheaper, yet still retains my targeted performance).

If 13.3" is on the table, the Sager NP7330 deserves a strong look. There's nothing below the Y401P. The only other upgrade at 14" is the MSI GE40, but that's $1200.

Is the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P a wise investment?
http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-y510p.aspx

I've NEVER had a gaming computer (desktop/laptop). Always been a consoles/portable guy. Furthermore I go to school so getting a desktop is not a viable option, especially since I don't know where I'll be moving after I finish my Bachelor's. I'm not interested in playing stuff at ultra settings. Just Normal graphics and 60fps.

What say you Gaf?

Guys, so here's the deal.

First of all, I am a noob at computers (basically know I know that a PC needs a processor and other stuff, but I have no clue what's good and what's not so good)

I read the OP and here's my situation. I am from the netherlands and followed the link provided in the OP.
Thing is, I don't understand anything. What should I choose?

My current situation (and I am reading this off the stickers on my laptop):
Acer laptop
Intel Core i5-450M
15.6 inch
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
4 GB DDR3 memory
750 GB HDD

It's 2 years old, and it's starting to show some faults. So in the coming months, I am looking to upgrade the thing. I bought it for 500€ (?) and I will be looking in the price range of around 500-750€.

I like to play games, but I am perfectly fine playing games on low/medium. I played some BF3 on low on my laptop, and currently playing Chivalry on low is alright.
So I am not looking for anything fancy, just something that can go for a couple of years (2-3)

First of all, what kind of processor do I have and what kind do I need? And how good (or bad) is the one I have right now?

Second: I was told when I bought my laptop that my video card was medium end, what should I buy to plan for the future, and something that is compatible with my price range?

Third: How much RAM do I need? I have 4 right now, and whenever I check CanYouRunIt, the site doesn't ever show RAM is the reason I can't play the game. So do I need an upgrade?

Finally: Is this the right place to ask this stuff in? Or do I need to go somewhere else?

Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for a laptop to replace my desktop. However, the plan is to keep all the desktop peripherals in place so frequently I'd just dock the laptop and game/work on a large monitor with Kb/M + better speakers. I don't need games to work on "ultra" settings but medium+ at 60fps would be good.

Looking for:
13-14"
<$1400
touchscreen

My wife currently has a MacBook Air so something with similar build quality would definitely be a plus as the laptop will portable and somewhat abused.

Depends on the budget. If it's 'the SLI 750M model vs. the world', I say take the comparably priced machine w/ GTX 770M instead, the Sager NP8230.

1. You have a dual core, which all i5s are. An i7 quad core is today's ideal, with the next-gen consoles each possessing an 8-core CPU.

2. If we're talking about gaming as a priority, I choose the GT 750M as the minimum.

3. System RAM is still overrated, and almost everything ships with more than 4GB now anyway.

4. Why would this not be the thread? No need to answer this one. Or maybe there is.

Link me to some Dutch online laptop retailers, and I'll see what I can find.

This combination does not exists. Well, maybe up on Elysium.

Is the screen on the Razer Blade 14 that bad?
200:1 contrast ratio, man. It's even worse than you imagine.

Feel free to see if you can stomach it though.

Have a quesion. I'm currently using a Samsung Series 7 Chronos with the following specs:

CPU : Intel Core i7-3635QM @ 2.4 GHz
RAM: 8 GB DDR3
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8870M 2GB GDDR5
OS: Windows 8 64-bit

Just how much would I benefit if I switch my 8 GB of ram to 16 GB? And what brands should I look for? The OP mentions the Kingston HyperX but I want some other options in case I can't find it.

Under the section "memory" in the OP

The best advice one can give: Spend as little as you possibly can on memory. A mere 4GB of 1333MHz is still more than enough, but 6 to 8 gigs of 1600MHz RAM is the standard for comfort right now. Just don't blow large sums in the laptop manufacturer's Configurator, because 8GB (2 x 4GB) of good 1600MHz RAM is dirt cheap right now. Always take the minimum they offer and DIY upgrade it yourself at home.

I never quite understood how RAM factors in games or any other stuff.

Country: USA

Price: $1000

Max size: 17" (prefer smaller)

Planned usage:

Light gaming - CS:GO, maybe Skyrim, and some old games (KOTOR, Deus Ex) Would prefer to play CS:GO/ Source games on higher settings, and definitely at native resolution (60 FPS of course)

Image Editing - GIMP, Adobe applications

Everyday Usage - Browsing, streaming, typing applications, spreadsheets, and GAF

Misc:

1 - Dedicated GPU
2 - 6+ GB Ram (Heavy multitasking)
3 - USB 3
4 - 1600x900 or higher is fine (I don't really like 1366x768)
5 - FAST boot times (I have times when I'll need to get it out quickly)
6 - 256 GB + (preferably more space)
8 - 6+ hour battery life when not gaming (obviously gaming will bring it down)
9 - Would prefer NO bloatware, or a laptop that can easily have it removed (Such as a clean install of Windows)
10 - Runs cool? My MB Air has been running ultra hot lately

My current laptop (since July 2011) is a Macbook Air (13 inch). I have installed Windows 7 on it and love the fast speeds I have been getting. The performance has also been pretty good, but I am just getting tired of it. (Also it runs HOT, like SUPER hot). I will most likely sell it soon and use that money towards a better laptop.

Games aren't even universally surpassing 4GB of system RAM yet, so your 8GB is enough to be happy with for the foreseeable future. Save your money.

Budget: $600-800
Size: Don't care

Gigabyte P35K and P34G should be out soon.

Might be worth taking a look at the Sager NP8230. If you think 15.6 inches is too large then the 13 inchSager NP7330 Might be worth a look as well, though it has less power than the NP8230.

The NP8230 is pretty far from an Ultrabook.

Price: £700

Max size: 15"

Planned usage:

Light - medium gaming: will probably be used for playing BF3 ,TF2, CSGO and FF14:AAR if i get into it. I already have a high end desktop for high end gaming

Programming and Game Dev: I use everything from eclipse to visual studio, 3ds max, UDK and other similar developer tools

Misc:

- I don't require a laptop with an operating system as I can get one for free through Dreamspark
- 500GB + HDD space
- 8GB ram is preferable can live with 6gb though
- 1080p screen is highly preferable
- a decent boot up speed would be nice but an SSD probably wont fit in budget so a hybrid drive would probably be best
- a 4th generation intel cpu is also preferable SO i am atelast slightly future proofed in the CPU department.

ive been eyeing up the Levono y510p but this is not yet out in the UK
and ive also been looking at PC Specialist stuff but they havent rolled out haswell across their entire line yet.

I know this is for gaming laptops, but I don't want to start a new thread.

My wife's brother is going to school soon and needs a laptop. He doesn't game, wants 15", and a DVD drive. I don't want to suggest him some piece of shit Best Buy machine, but I don't want to suggest him something like my Y500 that sits on a 2.5 hour battery life. He'll need somewhere around 4-5 I imagine.

What options exist that aren't absolutely terrible? He doesn't want to go over $1000, but I'm trying to find something in the $600-800 range to save him money. I know he'd like touchscreen, too...But it looks like the best options there are around 13".

Thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken aren't most touch screen laptops over $1,200? And often they don't include a DVD drive. Could be wrong, of course.

I got my GT60 in the mail a few days ago, it seems to work fine, though the airplane mode touch button doesn't work at all. Not sure if I should try to fix it or not, I'd probably barely use the button anyway, and there are other ways to get airplane mode on.

Oh, I always thought that ultrabook just meant a laptop with above average specs. Didn't know it also factored in that it had to be thin.
Yeah Ultrabook is actually a movement coined by Intel. You have to go through them to officially deem your laptop an Ultrabook.
